Russian, Iranian presidents held talks on August 12 — Kremlin

The presidents discussed Washington’s actions on the global scene, the situation in Syria and bilateral agreements

MOSCOW, August 13. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani have discussed Washington’s actions on the global scene, the situation in Syria and bilateral agreements on the sidelines of the Caspian Summit on August 12, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"The situation linked to Washington’s actions was discussed, as well as bilateral Russian-Iranian relations and the situation in Syria - there was a wide variety of issues on the agenda," Peskov said.

In May US President Donald Trump declared the withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and promised to both return the old sanctions and launch new ones. The first part of the US sanctions was enacted overnight into August 7. The other parties to the deal - Russia, China, France, Germany and the United Kingdom - did not approve of the US’ withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and remained committed to the old agreements.

Yesterday, Putin and Rouhani held an isolated meeting on the sidelines of the Caspian Summit in the Kazakh city of Aktau. The meeting was closed. Ahead of the conversation, the presidents noted cooperation between the two countries in different spheres - from economic to security cooperation. The sides also discussed cooperation in the Eurasian Economic Union.
