A land of perpetual springtime with more eco-diversity per square mile than any place else on the planet .

Day 1: July 14–Welcome to Cuenca!

Arriving on the early morning flight Quito-Cuenca, you will be greeted and escorted to the elegant and historic Casa del Aguila hotel... our home away from home. Once settled in, we will take our own personalized walking tour of Cuenca and discover why it is a world-renowned UNESCO World Heritage site. Barter for fresh vegetables at a native market or get a healing from a traditional curandero. Lunch at a lovely museum café overlooking the Tomebamba river. At 8,500 feet, you will enjoy the chance to catch your breath and acclimatize. The evening will be a welcome dinner and orientation meeting with local cuisine and music.

Day 2:  July 15- Cuenca– City Exploration

Get ready for an urban adventure! Our local team will facilitate an experience for your first story. Opportunities include: assisting at a soup kitchen for refugees, creating connections at the vast Feria Libre – a sea of fruits, vegetables and ladies with velvet skirts, straw hats and smiles -  or let us give you a bus pass and a city map and send you off  on your own hunting for a tale worth telling.  Afterwards we dine together and delight each other with our exploits ‘workshopping’ our impressions – crafting them into even better stories.

Day 3: July 16  - Los Cajas National Park  -  Hiking/Journaling

Spectacular Parque Nacional Los Cajas, only 30km west of Cuenca, encompasses 2854 sq km of golden-green moor like páramo  (mountainous Andean grasslands) is dotted with hundreds of lakes that shine like jewels against a rough, otherworldly countryside. Our day hike traverses lakes and forest and includes a pack lunch. There will be time for ‘mini-solo’ experiences -  time to be alone in wild nature - and group discussion.   Afterward you will be hosted at Jeff andJaffe’s home that night for a sacred cacao ceremony

Day 4:  July 17 - Saraguro– Traditional Andean Homestay

Ready to time travel? The people of Saraguro have kept their vibrant folkways, music, religion, and farming practices alive and intact since they were forcibly relocated from the shores of Lake Titicaca over five centuries ago by their Incan rulers. Traveling on public bus we cross high Andean pastures and deep canyons. After a brief tour of the town you will be taken by van into the hills to meet your Saraguro family with whom you will visit, dine and spend the night and morning. (If this doesn’t give you material for some great stories we will be very surprised!)

Day 5:  July 18 - Saraguro/Cuenca - Evening Workshop

After a leisurely morning you will be picked up by van, returned to Saraguro and enjoy lunch at  Shamui  a surprisingly classy, award-winning restaurant on the main square of indigenous Saraguro before heading back to Cuenca. Our evening workshop will explore presentation skills such as authentic presence and energetic congruence and be held at the historic meeting room at Casa Del Aguila.

Day 6: July 19– Sustag Valley ‘Finca’ Retreat –Hiking and Prepping

Traveling in private bus, we head to our ‘secret getaway’ – a private ‘finca’or farm that dates back to the 1800’s. Its three foot thick adobe walls, balconies, running river, open fields and woodlands make it the perfect place to do some hiking, relaxing and preparing for our public presentations the following day. We will prepare our meals family style and rehearse and perform around the fireplace.

Day 7:  July 20 -  Cuenca– Afternoon Public Presentations

The big day!  Time to shine! Having chosen your favorite Ecuadoran experience, you will be presenting from the stage to a local, English-speaking audience. Your performance will be videoed and an edited version will be given to you later. Afterwards we head out to Tiestos, one of the finest and ‘funnest’ restaurants in Cuenca featuring traditional Ecuadoran cuisine.... for our victory celebration!

Day 8:  July 21 - On Your Own in Cuenca

Your flight to Quito probably won’t depart till the evening. Spend the day strolling the paths along the Tomebamba River, visit the Inca ruins and anthropology museum at Pumapungo, shop for souvenir textiles to take home to your friends and loved ones,  buy a world- famous straw Cuenca ’panama’ hat for yourself or take a turn through Parque Calderon and climb the stairs to the top of the ‘new’ cathedral for a farewell view.  It’s your last day in Cuenca so enjoy yourself!  Final group lunch.

The trip officially ends after lunch on July 21st Don’t worry, we’ll help you catch your plane!
