President's Message

Whew - 2018 was a whirlwind inaugural year for Historic Wallingford!

Many thanks to you – our members, neighbors, and friends – for your participation and interest in Historic Wallingford. You made our first year a terrific success. Together, we launched the organization at a standing-room-only event in January and followed this with lectures on neighborhood history and architecture in the spring. We walked in the 69th annual Wallingford Family Parade (Seattle’s oldest parade!), hosted a picnic, and manned an info booth at the Wurst Fest. Of course, many of you participated in and volunteered at our day-long Wallingford Historic Homes Fair in October. And, we were delighted to co-host with Historic Seattle a book-signing event with historians Paul Dorpat and Jean Sherrard.

Looking back on all that Historic Wallingford did this year, I’ve reflected on why this organization is important to me. I spend my energy leading this organization because I value this place. My family moved to Wallingford in 1961, and the old homes, apartment buildings, churches, and business are woven into the historic fabric of this place I’ve long called home. The people – many lifelong friends who are loving and generous – truly make Wallingford a neighborhood. I’m involved because I cherish Wallingford, and this place is an important part of my own identity. Whether you’ve lived here for decades, recently arrived, or are visiting, you, too, can cherish this place.

We aim to showcase Wallingford’s history and architecture. It has a great sense of place and is a significant cultural asset for the entire city. Did you know that - as currently built - Wallingford is the fifth-oldest neighborhood in the city?  Wow!

Thank you for supporting this organization. As you look ahead to 2019, please consider becoming a member, volunteering at an event, or serving on a committee. I look forward to seeing you out in the neighborhood!
- Rhonda Bush, President

Volunteer Opportunities

Historic Wallingford is in planning mode. As we look to the year ahead, we're seeking volunteers with an interest in:
  • writing and compiling content for our website and newsletter;
  • developing and maintaining social media profiles;
  • advertising and promotion;
  • and coordinating volunteers and membership.
Volunteers should plan to dedicate at least a few hours each week and to serve on a communications committee that meets monthly. Please direct inquiries to Sarah.Martin@historicwallingford.org.

Seattle Now-and-Then Event Filmed

Historic Seattle and Historic Wallingford recently co-hosted an illustrated talk by historian Paul Dorpat and photographer Jean Sherrard on their new book Seattle Now & Then: The Historic Hundred. The Seattle Channel filmed the event, and you can watch it online here.

Read more about the book and how to order a signed copy on our website. It's also available in Seattle-area bookstores.

Wallingford Property Featured

Did you catch this blog post "Back In Time" in a recent Wallyhood dispatch? This old place at 1058 N. 36th Street, pictured here in a 1950 tax assessor photo, still stands! In 2013, Paul Dorpat featured it in his Seattle Now and Then column. It sure reminds us how these old places with stories to tell are all around us in plain sight.
