Dating the Enemy

Rate this book
Ms. Romance, Hannah Arden, writes one of the top read relationship advice columns in the nation. Mr. Reality, Brooks North, writes the top read relationship advice column.

Ms. Romance believes in true love and soul mates. Mr. Reality believes love is a term humanity has assigned to the primal instinct to procreate. She believes in fate—he in chance. She knows there’s one right person for everyone—he knows there are multiple ones. The two writers couldn’t be more polarized on relationships. They’re professional rivals, and philosophical antagonists.

For eight years, their battles have been fought with words and ink. That changes when they apply for the same position at the World Times and find themselves face-to-face for the first time. Brooks isn’t the sour-faced, antiquity of a man Hannah pictured. And Hannah isn’t exactly the middle-aged shrew with cat hair on her housedress that Brooks imagined either.

In lieu of competing for the promotion traditional ways, the two writers are presented with playing the leading roles in a social experiment unlike any before. Can a person be tricked into falling in love? Can a relationship be crafted under the right string of circumstances? Hannah knows the answer. So does Brooks.

Agreeing to the terms, the two set out on a three-month dating experiment, live-streamed for the world to watch. All Hannah has to do to win is not fall in love with the narcissistic brute. All Brooks has to do is get the starry-eyed dreamer to fall in love with him. Both are so confident in their philosophies, they expect the challenge to be easy.

With the world watching, Brooks and Hannah will be forced to confront their beliefs and conclude, once and for all, who’s right. The answer is one neither of them saw coming.

3.5 'My New Reality' Stars!
ARC provided by the author via Ardent Prose PR in exchange for an honest review.

Loved the premise of the story. Loved the tension and chemistry between the couple. Loved the romantisism around the theme. Especially loved the last 30% of the story. Dating the Enemy is like the kind of romance I normally enjoy and, as you probably know, I enjoyed many of Nicole Williams' novels in the past. Did I enjoy this one? Oh yeah, I sure did and I read it pretty fast. Was it my favorite by this author? Not really. Still, Dating the Enemy was a good read, entertaining and pretty emotional, the hero as always was amazing and the ending, while rushed, had me tearing up because it was so beautiful and romantic!

So, Dating the Enemy is Nicole's newest standalone release and it's an enemies-to-lovers story between two journalists that had a pretty amazing one night stand and now they find each other again, now fighting for the same position at the World Times. Hannah belives in true loves and soulmates, Brooks does not. To win the promotion, a "social experiment" begins between them, forcing both to date each other for three months in front of millions of people. What will happen? Read it to find out!

It was a circus, and Brooks and I had become the main attraction.

Here is the thing. The theme of the story is great. The characters too. And their chemistry, when it actually begins, it's amazing. I loved Brooks, he is great and super swoony. Hannah, I really loved her at the start but she got on my nerves many times towards the end. And while there was lots of funny and romantic-like moments, I did miss seeing these two as an actual couple. It takes them a lot of time to leave their rivalry aside and accept that their one night stand was mind-blowing and now that they know each other well, the chemistry is not stopping.

“I want to know the real you. And I want you to know the real me.”

For me, I missed seeing these two dating for real because all that happens in a rush in the last 30% of the book. Was it great? Absolutely but I wanted more. And I also have to say that the ending felt rushed and I do wish there was an epilogue to complete better the story. Again, was it super romantic and extremely adorable? Yes, I cried my eyes out so it was definitely emotional but, again, I wanted more of these two!

You don’t find a soul mate. You become one.

Therefore, my rating for Dating the Enemy is 3.5-4 STARS because I still really enjoyed the story, that is why I can't completely decide on a rating between those two numbers. I loved the storyline, I really liked the characters and the chemistry between Brooks and Hannah. Do I wish we saw more of them as a couple? Yes, I do. But what I saw and read was pretty awesome! It's been a while since my last book by Nicole, but I do wish she writes the stories of Hannah's friends because I am definitely curious about them, especially Quinn (with Justin) and Sybil's (with Dean)! So yeah, please Nicole, write more stories about this group of characters!!

I LOVED IT !!! 💕❤💕❤

My life is so not “lame” I, of course, did not spend my New Year’s eve reading this book, not at all. Okay, in my defence it was a perfect way to start the year laughing.

❝You don’t find a soul mate. You become one. You don’t fall in love. You create it. You live it. You shape and mold and build upon it until it has become the sacred thread tying two unlikely souls to one another. An unbreakable bond that defies meaning, refusing to be lumped into a definition one can pen into words, or fit into a box.❞

An enemies-to-lovers, office, reality tv show, romance. The humour was so fucking great! Literally, Nicole Williams sarcasm and jokes had me tearing up. I picked up this novel because the synopsis intrigued me, it sounded a bit like The Hating Game and that immediately sold me. I wasn’t expecting to have so much fun while reading it if you look the word hilarious in the dictionary you may end up seeing the cover of this book. I do believe this book is not the best romance I have read, as it did lack in some aspects, but it was what I needed at the moment.

The plot and writing were great, I was able to vividly imagine all the scenes. My only complaint is the length, it had the potential to expand and create more clarity in some actions the main characters took. I feel this is a great book for people who are just dipping their feet in the romance genre.

Mr. Reality:
Brooks Brooks brooks! I really liked him, although expected to be the bad boy and man who couldn’t fall in love, I connected more to him than Hannah. I could completely understand his way of life and why he had those hash values. I wish this book had a double perspective, I would have loved to be inside this amn’s head.

“It’s not that they’re in possession of a black soul, they’re just protecting a really big heart.”

Ms. Romance:
Hannah dear, I liked you but we are too similar and too different at the same time. I somehow rooted for Mr. reality sorry. I sometimes got too many naive vibes, I do believe I have a part in myself that do still believe in true love shit, if not why would I consume mostly romance books, right? But with every passing year, I become more sour and cold.

Quinn:
My FAV! Yes, the best friend side-character was the cinnamon roll of this book. I am just so intrigued for her and I WANT HER STORY. She seems like the main character I would love, besides her sarcasm is my jam.

This book felt like a 1.30 rom-com movie. It was short and sweet, but I wished it had more depth. I felt the relationship a bit rushed. The chemistry was for sure there, but the author as others did something that is becoming my pet peeve. The rush over the progress of the relationship by saying 5 weeks later and we have been seeing each other a bit and blah blah. I NEED MORE SCENES FROM THIS 5 WEEKS! I need to attach my love to the couple. Relationship talk if present. Also, apparently I have transformed to a horny beast this 2019 but I was a bit disappointed by the lack of sexy times.

😻How funny this was.
😾Perhaps the length of the book. I wanted a bit more of depth to really grow the connection with the characters.

“To everyone who’s ever been broken by love, but refused to be defeated by it. Love on.”

📢
Recommendation. If you like office romances and hate-to-love then you will enjoy this book.

My thoughts on Dating the Enemy are a dichotomy.
Nicole Williams writes a good romance. I really enjoyed the banter between Brooks and Hannah. She is a bit sassy, knows what she wants and goes for it. Brooks started off as a bit of a d-bag, but he really wasn't and did show it. The grand gesture at the end was good, as was the article that instigated it.
However, I am irrationally angry at the whole “social experiment “ thing and the stupid boss, Mr Conrad. He is an idiotic misogynist who has no regard for real people. Hannah should have called HR or quit on him immediately and then write an expose. GAAAHHH WHY WOULD SHE WANT TO WORK FOR THIS A$$HOLE!!???!?!? I understand we needed the plot device for the animosity between Brooks and Hannah, but this was so crazy to me! These are peoples lives here. And they were forced to compete in this stupid "experiment" to win a promotion????
I almost put this down because their boss was such a sexist jackass. But I kept going and Brooks and Hannah won me over. The article at the end tugged at my heartstrings and made it worth the journey.

There’s a reason for everything, Arden.

This is a good ONS to enemies to lovers read. Hannah & Brooks are thrust into a dating social experiment while also competing for a job. (Yeah I’m pretty sure this is an HR no no, but hey... it’s a fun read!) It’s entertaining reading them getting to know one another and I enjoyed the banter between the two main characters. That being said the heat level was low, so if you’re looking for steamy... this is not it. Not that it HAS to be, but just a fair warning to those who are used to some steam. Also I did start to skim a tiny bit at the end. I just needed to know how everything would turn out!

“He already screwed me. I’m not going to let him fuck me over too.”

Dating the Enemy by Nicole Williams is an intense slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romance that definitely kept me on the edge of my seat for hours! It’s an epic battle between Ms. Romance and Mr. Reality…who will come out on top?

I loved the premise of the story, the banter between the two main characters, and the overall outcome of the story was satisfying. There was almost too much of a slow burn between these two, but I can understand why the author chose that route because of the background with Brooks and Hannah. I still adored their story. It was an easy page-turner for me and I was rooting for these two even with all of the frustrations that they brought out in me. From the very beginning Brooks and Hannah thought they had the winning spot in the bag…but a lot can happen in three months. Who will surrender first with their reputations and futures on the line?

Nicole Williams’ writing style has always been my cup of tea. From prose to character development, to setting the ideal scene, Ms. Williams has been a step above. Her latest release is no exception. The storytelling, the characters…all of it was great and I could not put it down. I’m so grateful that even though the burn was slow between Hannah and Brooks…their happily ever after was completely beautiful and satisfying. I hope that this author will continue to write outside the box and give us original romances we can cherish forever.

“I’m not on her side. I’m not on his side. I’m on your side because we are the kind of friends that would bleed for each other. However”—she ignored my little huff—“I don’t think either of you have it totally right. When it comes to all of that love stuff, I think you both have your points and the truth lies somewhere in the middle.”

for this being my very first step into the new adult genre, i quite enjoyed this! i wasn’t sure what to expect, except lots of sex, but this book didn’t have a lot of sex in it. i guess, as someone who is new to the genre and isn’t into reading a lot of smut, i kind of appreciated it not being super sex heavy. (if you have new adult books that have some sex in it, but not a whole lot, please leave recommendations!)

i absolutely loved brooks north. he started off as an asshat, but towards the end he started showing who he really was and ugh, he’s precious. i also really liked quinn, she was a good friend to hannah. she was also really funny and i enjoyed her character. even jimmy i enjoyed reading about. i also liked hannah, though at times she did get a little annoying, but it wasn’t anything too terrible. she just had me rolling my eyes with some of the things she said or did.

one character that can burn in the firey depths of hell is conrad, hannah’s boss. oof, i hated him. he completely changed the game on them, simply to get more views on their show and because it would help out the company. it wasn’t fair to brooks or hannah what he did to them and i hope he chokes.

i also wished this story was a bit longer and spent a bit more time with brooks and hannah, when they weren’t being followed around by a camera. they had some really cute moments and i felt as if the story was rushed a little bit. especially the ending, i feel as if it could have an epilogue or a flash forward scene to a few months later, just to see where their relationship went and such.

overall, i’m glad i read this and am looking forward to reading more books from the new adult world!

Sigh, I need to stop getting so excited for new releases from my favorite authors... maybe my expectations are too high, because I keep ending up disappointed.

This book was just frustrating.

Hannah was so unlikable... Brooks was OKAY, but not great... and they had ZERO chemistry. Everything felt incredibly underdeveloped - the rules of the "social experiment" were vague and undefined. And I wish Hannah had handled it all differently. She's forced to go on these dates for 3 months - why not enjoy it??? You can enjoy yourself and not fall in love, good grief. Instead she was just miserable and angry and blah. I honestly have no idea why Brooks would even fall for her. BUT, even though I wasn't a fan of Hannah, I didn't blame her for not trusting Brooks - I wouldn't have trusted him either.

This had the potential to be really fun - I was so excited when I first read the premise. But it needed more time for writing and development before being published - I feel like the author was rushed, this wasn't what I've come to expect from her books. And then the super small side-story with Quinn is never resolved - her scenes regarding Justin were super annoying.

My rating might be on the harsh side.... It's probably more of a 3-star book.... but I'm just that disappointed. This wasn't the adorable book I was hoping for... I'm already forgetting it. Forgettable and Meh.

It doesn’t happen often where I find myself torn between which character I like better, the male or female lead of the story. When it came to Mr. Reality and Ms. Romance I could not pick a side. I was simply along for the ride, enjoying their snarky banter the whole way through. I especially loved the angst between these two. In many ways, this book reminded me of 10 Things I Hate About You, one of my favorite go-to chick-flicks to get lost in when I have experienced a horrible day. At the top of the “Tropes I Love” list, lies Enemies to Lovers. I enjoy the tense situations, the denial, and the competition that often ensues before the characters realize their love for one another. I don’t care if it’s predictable or if I’ve read it 85 times already, give me the book.

I loved watching these two attempt to prove the other wrong throughout the whole story. Eventually, it seemed as if the whole point they were trying to prove became muddled and lost on them, which was exactly the point I think the author was trying to prove. When it comes down to it, love is love. Even the most cynical or romantic hearts are not immune to it when it decides to sink its clutches into us. This is the exact reason I could not choose between Brooks or Hannah’s philosophies. They both were right in their own ways and it ultimately didn’t matter who would “win”.

My favorite thing about this story were Hannah’s attempts to convince herself Brooks was the biggest jerk on the planet. He was completely misunderstood and had a huge hidden heart beneath the tough exterior. These are my favorite book boyfriends to read about, just to watch the transformation in the end. Again, I don’t care if I know it’s coming, I still love it every single time!

This was only my second Nicole Williams book, but I definitely have to check out more by her in the future. I read Collared a few years ago and was blown away by the storytelling. There are quite huge differences between the two books, making her seem to be an incredibly versatile author.

If you’re looking for a fast, fun read to unwind with over the weekend, reminiscent of a great chick-flick, definitely pick this one up.

If you are in the mood for a hate to more story, this might be your book. I think I must not have been in the mood for this kind of storyline because DATING THE ENEMY didn’t hit the heights of enjoyment for me; it was a decent read, however.

Hannah is a journalist writing an advice column and I found Hannah a smidge irritating. One minute she was swooning over her one night-wish it had been every night-stand and the next she hated him. True enough Brooks swoops in to compete for the job she wants. What ensues is a boss-enforced dating schedule to be filmed and documented.

These characters didnt gel with me initially but I can say that they did grow on me a bit as time passed. The last quarter of the book swept in and dominated my interest and I loved that part, it felt full of emotion and it was packed with great story. I would have loved a bit more at the end.

So, this is a good, easy read if you’re searching for that hate/enemies trope. Go get wrapped up in the quips and angry banter.

I’m in absolute awe of this book and everything that came with it. Nicole Williams did an incredible job on this beauty and just oh my god.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review

When I seen Dating The Enemy I knew I had to get in on that book and boy am I glad I did.

Brooks is an asshole, a confidant, arrogant asshole that has had his fair share of women. He’s gorgeous and knows it. He’s Mr Reality, he doesn’t believe in love or soul mates and is determined to prove it

Hannah, she’s the kind of girl who loves happily ever afters, fairytales and everything that comes with them. She’s a sucker for a romance. She’s Ms Romance and she’s set to show the world love truly does exists.

Bring them both together and we’re left with a couple both trying to prove they’re right, what could possibly go wrong, right?

This book was everything I didn’t even know I needed. This storyline was consuming and even though I knew at some point everything was going to go to shit I still enjoyed it so damn much.

I’ve been a fan of Nicole Williams for a while now, she’s the kind of author who’s book you don’t want to miss out on. They’re angsty, fun and incredibly captivating. They leave you wanting more and wishing you had more.

Dating The Enemy was incredible. It’s a second chance romance, kinda and it’s damn well amazing, if you’re wondering if you should read this then don’t wonder any more just go ahead and READ IT!

Can't stop smiling, can't stop smiling, can't stop smiling! I'm in a bubble. A bubble of happiness, I'm floating and I'm doing my best to keep this bubble from bursting because I don't want this giddiness to end. Dating the Enemy hooked me right from the beginning. No frills, no drama, just a feel good enjoyable read. The witty banter between Ms. Romance and Mr. Reality had me living! I couldn't stop laughing at their exchanges, just the freaking best! I needed more and wanted so much more, ugh, I didn't want it to end.

Hannah and Brooks, OMFG these two were everything. The attraction they had towards each other was undeniable. They had chemistry in spades. Even though Brooks tried to hide it it was so obvious he was falling, and falling fast. Same goes for Hannah, there was no masking it because where her emotions lied it was no hiding it. And oh my gosh how the sparks flew when the inevitable happened. Ahhhhh, I was swooning so hard and couldn't keep the smile from my face. More, more, more, I just wanted and needed more.

Dating the Enemy was a fun enemies to lovers romance that had me laughing and smiling the whole way through. With two main characters I couldn't help but root for. All in all, another winner by Ms. Williams.

My friend, Sona, put it best when she said this book was a mix between "The Hating Game" and "The Ugly Truth". I could easily see tropes/motives from both the book and the movie in this story.

And, well, it worked.

This was entertaining, cute, feisty romance with a reasonable side of banter and reflections on love, romance and reality. And while my own view on romance and love is much closer to Mr Reality's, I'm glad that both Brooks and Hannah managed to convince the other of their respective worldviews.

One thing I found lacking in here was...well, the characters and their development? Don't get me wrong, the couple takes time to get to know each other beyond the superficial assessments they first make and we get both their background and a glimpse of their stories. Like what both their parents' marriages looked like. However, those backstories feel more like stereotypical stamps by the end, a quick easy explanation as to why they view love/romance the way they do. And other than that, we barely scratch the surface of their past dating habits, like, they start talking about it butit's ditched. I don't know, it just didn't sit well with me.

Anyway, apart from that, it was a good read and I totally rec, especially to all "enemies (to friends) to lovers" fans.

3.5 star from me ;)

If Ugly Truth ever met How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days we would get Dating the Enemy.

A guy who doesn’t believe in love Mr. Reality meets a girl Ms. Romance who thinks soulmates exist and there is a ‘the one’ for everyone. Well do I believe I soulmates? no. do I believe in love? no, but I sure as hell love reading enemies to lovers’ rom coms.

Dating the Enemy was a slow burn with an epic age-old battle of the sexes over love and reality that had me turning page after page. Who will win love or the harsh reality….. I mean come on we all know love will win so the premise though not new was engaging, and the character’s banter and chemistry throughout the book were one of the things I liked the most.

However, after the whole build up the ending felt damn rushed and again too predictable. This could also be because I have read a similar book The Hating Game which is one of my most favorite books. All in all, it was a fun read and I will be checking out more of Nicole Williams books in the future.

I liked this story. It was funny, cute, full of sexual tension and two characters I found myself quite invested in.

Ms Romance and Mr Reality have great chemistry together. Even though they both tell themselves the opposite and are so damn stubborn, they come to realise that opposites attract. I really enjoyed their bickering and the 'inner thought' dialogues.

This has a happy ending that will satisfy you and leave you with my big smile on your face (did for me)

This is a twist on the classic hate to love romance.

A hot night, they had hot sex which left her thinking about him

Later she is to fight for a promotion with him which leads to them being on a reality TV show.

One believes in love and the other doesnt
It's an emotional battle to find out who is right.

"Love isn't some magic spell, it's a detailed recipe."

Hate-to-love genres are slowly becoming one of my favorite things to read. When I finished Dating the Enemy, I felt like I had seen every thing that I love about romance novels: great, witty banter, a radiant connection, no sex scenes (because lets be honest, aren't we all over the whole smut thing by now?), and a genuine and fun plot. Most importantly, the book left a huge smile on my face when I finished it.

Three things I wanted to touch on in this review though are the character connections, Quinn, and the fact that this book would make an excellent movie!

"You don’t find a soul mate. You become one. You don’t fall in love. You create it. You live it. You shape and mold and build upon it until it has become the sacred thread tying two unlikely souls to one another. An unbreakable bond that defies meaning, refusing to be lumped into a definition one can pen into words, or fit into a box."

First, the character connection. Brooks and Hannah both had qualities within them that I loved. While seeing these qualities, I LOVED wanting them to be together. I just kept waiting for that itch to be scratched, so to say. I was so impressed with how much I loved seeing Brooks through Hannah's POV. For not having any of this book in Brook's POV, I sure was satisfied with his character. Nicole made it to where I could see both sides of the spectrum with them and when the story finally unfolds, I thought maybe I was with him but in all reality, I was with her the whole time. Not only was the connection between Brooks and Hannah so dominant, the connection between Hannah and Quinn was one of my most favorite friendship connections that I have seen in a book in a long time.

Can we talk about how awesome of a movie this would make?! SERIOUSLY! One that I would flip on and watch over and over and over just for the fun of it. I don't have anything else to add to that statement but I would 110% support this!

Last but not least, Quinn was a fantastic addition to this story. We either ARE a Quinn or HAVE a Quinn in our life and IMO, Quinn's make the world a much better place for the Hannahs. I can't explain enough how great of an addition she was to this story, I wouldn't even mind it if Nicole felt the urge to write a book for her...wink wink.

The slow burn this book contains (another thing that I love) might not have been intended to give off a huge electrifying connection so soon to the reader but it did! Brooks and Hannah were endless amounts of fun that kept me laughing the whole way through but yearning for them at the same time. The dialogue was quick, the writing was wonderful, and I was entertained the whole way through.

“And what am I supposed to do if my special someone is a scaly underwater dweller with fins?”
I patted her cheek. “Then learn to swim.”

Dating the Enemy was a breath of fresh air. Completely. It had the perfect mixture of angst, swoon worthy moments, comedy, and a strong plot. I loved seeing both sides of Ms. Romance and Mr. Reality!

I feel like it's only fair to warn you guys right off the bat: this is going to be more rant than review. It is also going to be loaded full of spoilers because I have some thoughts.

Okay, I thought I was going to love this book. Enemies-to-lovers is my jam and I basically read all I can of that trope. While I don't think I've ever read another one of Nicole William's books, I had high hopes for Dating the Enemy because of all the hype and the premise. However, it just . . . did not work for me. At all.

Let's go through what I did like: the cover is awesome, it definitely caught my eye and I feel like it reflects the tension of enemies-to-lovers really well. This was also a book that, despite the problems I had with it, kept me reading. I went through it pretty quickly (though, to be fair, I skimmed a decent bit toward the end) and I didn't DNF, so that's something.

Yeah . . . that was pretty much all I was okay within this book. I feel really bad about not having more nice things to say about it but it just wasn't my cup of tea. So, onto the things that didn't work/the rant.

Ohhhhhh my gosh, you guys, I could not stand this contrived, weird social experiment/dating situation the two MCs were thrown into. It made zero sense to me. Basically, Brooks, aka "Mr. Reality" has to make Hannah fall in love with him and Hannah, aka "Ms. Romance" has to not fall in love with him proving . . . something? I don't know what the reasoning is behind this or how Hannah would win if she didn't fall in love. Wouldn't that disprove or weaken all her points about love? Like, if Hannah was supposed to be "Ms. Romance" and Brooks is "Mr. Reality", wouldn't it make more sense for Hannah to make Brooks fall in love with her and admit love is real instead of the other way around?? Hannah already believes in love so I'm confused as to what Brooks was trying to convince her of by making her fall in love with him. And isn't he kind of an ass for manipulating her emotions and feelings and making her fall in love with him when he doesn't believe in love and doesn't plan on returning those feelings (at least at first)?

Like, Hannah's whole schtick was proving that love lives and stuff but she spent three months not falling in love with a guy who was wooing her so like . . . what's the logic here? That makes no sense to me. It seemed like the author confused the main characters. What they each preached absolutely didn't coincide with their actions throughout the book. Brooks, the supposedly love-unbeliever, was totally romantic and wanted a relationship with Hannah. But Hannah, the "hopeful romantic" was SO RESISTANT to all the romance and was so wishy-washy and unable to own up to her feelings, even behind doors when she and Brooks were "real" and away from the cameras.

Throughout the book, Brooks had to basically stage these dates to take Hannah on where they were filmed to a live audience and it was so cringy. I guess it was going for a like, The Bachelor vibe but it just didn't work for me. It felt weird that a newspaper would turn to TV to up its own popularity but, whatever, that's the least of my problems with this book. One of these dates he takes her on is to this dance club and when she gets there -- being filmed, keep in mind -- Brooks is dancing and flirting with another girl!! Like, what the actual hell, Brooks! What an asshole move! It's one thing to be a jerk in private but when literally hundreds of thousands of people are watching you disrespect the girl you actually asked on a date by flirting with another one . . . that's just gross. That whole situation made me so mad. Especially when Brooks was like "oh, are you jealous?! *winkwink*". Like, no, you ginormous douche, I'm pissed that you're embarrassing me and disrespecting me, especially in front of a live audience!

It also felt like there was no gradual change in Brooks's feelings toward Hannah. Like, the first time they meet he's like "love doesn't exist!!!" and the next he's trying to take Hannah on "real dates" and wooing her and wanting a real relationship. Like, what convinced him he wanted love?? Hannah constantly rejecting him?

Oh my gosh, I also got so tired of the constant conversations about whether love existed. I get that was a pretty significant theme in the book but it was just the same exact conversation every single chapter. It drove me insane and those conversations were where the most skimming took place.

ALSO (sorry, I know this review is getting long but I GOTTA RANT), it felt like the author was trying to be super body positive and the MC Hannah described herself as a size 10 and not like the other super thin woman in the city but it just didn't work. Hannah made some somewhat negative comments about her own weight throughout the book (usually followed by Brooks being like "no way, you're crazy" or whatever) and she also constantly tore down women who were skinny. It was really obnoxious to read and I don't think the author achieved what she meant to do, which I'm sure was to be positive and inclusive of different body types.

Okay, there was one last scene at the end that I have to talk about because it was so unbelievable and out of nowhere -- toward the end of the book, Brooks and Hannah are making out or whatever in her apartment and her friends just randomly show up (it's late at night BTW) wanting to watch the like, extended version of Pride and Prejudice so Hannah basically forces Brooks into her closet AND PROCEEDS TO WATCH THE FIRST DISC OF THE MOVIE WITH HER FRIENDS. WHILE BROOKS IS JUST STANDING LOCKED IN A CLOSET.

Like, WTF??? First of all, why would her friend just show up in the middle of the night with no warning and expect to watch a several-hours-long movie? SECOND OF ALL, why didn't Hannah just tell them not tonight?! Wouldn't that make more sense than making your boyfriend stand in the closest for "a few hours"?! Who does that?? And apparently, Brooks wasn't even mad about it! He was just like "oh, now you own me *sexyeyes*". No way! If I was in that situation, I'd be fuming. She left him in a closet for a few hours while she watched a movie with her friends!! A movie they already watched hundreds of times! UGH.

Honestly, I have several other things I could talk about that really bothered me but I'm going to cut myself off there. This book just . . . didn't make sense to me. Nothing really worked and I was left just feeling frustrates and confused about all the high ratings. That said, there are generally high ratings for this book so I'm not in the majority here. If this sounds like your cup of tea, give it a shot! I hope you like it more than I did.

It was a circus, and Brooks and I had become the main attraction.

I’m trying to figure out the best way to write this review without sounding negative because I really did like the book. However, I spent a huge amount of time angry at how the whole premise of the story was set up. Not angry at how it was written but angry at the character who set it up to go that way. Which leads me to repeating my theory that only a well-written story with strongly developed characters could make me have such real emotions while still hanging on every word and falling in love with the characters. At least the ones who were not misogynistic, pompous douchenozzles who don’t care about ruining people’s lives.

All of that set aside, I truly did enjoy this story and the slow and steady way that, despite the anger and competition, Hannah and Brooks took the opportunity to really get to know each other.

Despite my initial worries that Brooks was going to be kind of a cocky, stubborn hero, I couldn’t help but fall in love with him as I quickly learned that he was going to be the easier nut to crack. Not that Hannah had more riding on their competition but she was clearly the most resistant to let go and relax.

There was a steady beat of tension woven into this story that kept things interesting without making it feel over-dramatized. Over all this ended up being a really sweet story and I’m kind of hoping to hear more about some of the secondary characters and to revisit Hannah and Brooks after their HEA.

Oh how do I love a good slow burn romance with the perfect amount of chemistry bubbling underneath the surface.

Nicole Williams does it again - she makes me a huge believer in romance and that their is love out there for everyone.

Hannah and Brooks story is one that I really enjoyed. The premise of the story was amazing along with how Nicole plotted everything out. Hannah and Brooks are both vying for the same job, but they have to prove to the world who's views on love and relationships is more accurate.

This story felt real and authentic. I loved the banter between Hannah and Brooks. I loved their dates and non-dates and how easily they got along outside of the competition. Watching everything unfold and neither realizing what was really happening felt the most real and honest to me. I enjoyed it a lot.

Nicole also does a great job of building her secondary characters and having me wanting each of them to get their own book at some point (hint hint). I loved the camaraderie between everyone and even the witty comments here and there added the perfect amount of humor to the book.

Dating The Enemy was very enjoyable, sweet and funny read.

3.5 STARS

I am huge fan of Williams and was thrilled to see the hate/love trope in the synopsis. The beginning was a struggle, and I felt little connection to Hannah and Brooks relationship. I wish there had been a flashback chapter or more details about the "one night" between Brooks and Hannah to enhance the chemistry between these two. The second half of the book is stronger, and there is more emotional development to balance out the banter. Brooks is a but of a jerk, and I enjoyed seeing his character change. This is a satisfactory read but not a favorite by this author.

Thank you to Nicole Williams for my advanced review copy.

I absolutely loved this enemies to lovers romance that had some twists that were not the usual or predictable.

Life and Style journalist, Hannah Arden (Ms. Romance) couldn’t let go of the idea that her mysterious one night stand may have been her “one”, her soulmate.

“There’s one perfect someone for everyone. Forget about the rest.”

Hannah finds herself pitted against her professional nemesis the cocky and arrogant
Brooks North (Mr. Reality) in a dating experiment battle to prove the existence of real love and true soulmates. The prize is Hannah’s dream job as head of the Life and Style department at World Times.

“And what am I supposed to do if my special someone is a scaly underwater dweller with fins?”
I patted her cheek. “Then learn to swim.”

This story is packed with humor, witty banter, romance and emotion. I just fell in love with Hannah and Quinn!! I need more Quinn in my life!!
