If you live in the city of Collegedale and are considering renting out your home using services like AirBnB, you will now have to pay for a permit.

The city is the latest in Hamilton County to adopt standards for short-term rentals based on legislation passed by Tennessee lawmakers last year.

The city defines a short-term rental as "a dwelling that is rented wholly or partially for a fee for a period of less than thirty continuous days."

Collegedale says the new ordinance, which is now in effect, requires property owners to register and apply for a short-term rental unit operation permit.

Property owners must pay $300 for a permit, and the property also must pass a city inspection. The city says an inspection helps to assure the unit meets or exceeds codes designed to provide safe lodging to guests.

Each year property owners will be required to renew their permit at an annual fee of $100.

The City of Collegedale will soon be sending notification letters to short term rental property owners that will inform them of the ordinance and encourage them to register for their permit.

Property owners will have until June 3, 2019 to register.
