If you’re concerned with fine lines and wrinkles or volume loss in your face, neck, and hands, dermal fillers can work wonders in giving the skin a smoother and more supple appearance. With many great products on the market today, choosing the right filler for you can sometimes be overwhelming. There are a few different types of fillers that work in different ways within the body.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide (carbohydrate) chemical compound that occurs naturally in the body. It exists between skin cells and in the joints. Over time, the hyaluronic acid levels in the body diminish. The sharpest decline occurs after age 40, leaving the skin looking less smooth and supple as we age.
Because an abundance of hyaluronic acid gives the skin its youthful appearance, it’s a key ingredient in fillers that help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are ideal for treating…
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Deep smile lines that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth
- Acne scarring
- Marionette lines at the corners of the mouth
- Worry lines across the forehead
- Smokers’ lines (vertical lines around the mouth)
- Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
Restylane
Restylane and Restylane Lyft target fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Restylane Lyft is FDA approved to treat volume loss in the backs of the hands, making it the first filler to be approved by the FDA to treat areas other than the face. Restylane Silk is a lip enhancer that combats volume loss and creates a natural shape.
Revanesse Versa
Revanesse Versa is a remarkable filler for the lips with a proprietary formulation, giving the lips a good balance of smoothness and volume due to its precise spherical particles. Revanesse Versa is designed to produce long-lasting results and is easily absorbed by the body as its molecules break down over time. A recent study also has shown that Versa fillers produced 24% less swelling than comparable products.
Juvéderm
Juvéderm fillers are known for particularly long-lasting results, especially in targeting smile lines, facial folds, and wrinkles. Juvéderm Voluma and Voluma XC are especially effective in addressing volume loss and sagging in the cheeks. Juvéderm Volbella is the longest lasting filler that can be used for lip augmentation. Patients have reported Juvéderm Volbella results lasting as long as 12 months, while most other fillers’ results last only six.
Biostimulatory Fillers
Biostimulatory fillers boost the body’s natural collagen production. This is why the results from biostimulatory fillers are generally longer lasting in treating fine lines and wrinkles than their hyaluronic acid-based counterparts.
Sculptra Aesthetic
Sculptra Aesthetic is an injectable in a class of its own. It is made from poly-L-lactic acid, a biodegradable, biocompatible polymer from the same family as alpha-hydroxy acid. It’s highly effective in boosting collagen production. Sculptra is approved to target shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds, especially in smile lines, marionette lines and chin wrinkles. We typically recommend three sessions for patients using Sculptra, and most experience natural-looking results that gradually improve over time, ultimately lasting up to two years.
Radiesse
Radiesse is frequently used to contour cheekbones and chins, plump the hands, and reduce the appearance of severe facial folds. What makes Radiesse unique is it not only provides an immediate boost in volume, but it also stimulates your body’s natural collagen production to deliver long-lasting results. The molecules of the Radiesse filler provide a structure for your own collagen to grow onto, and after time, Radiesse is absorbed by the body, leaving behind only your natural collagen.
