If you want to be able to grow your shop and dominate the online world then you’re going to need to start improving your website’s search engine optimization (SEO).

SEO will help you improve your site’s rank on Google and ultimately bring more customers to your shop.

There is no point in looking for a short term solution for your SEO problem and quick fixes such as paid advertising can only get you so far before your funds run out and you’re right back to square one.

SEO is a long-term game (anyone that promises you fast results isn’t telling you the whole truth). SEO works depending on your online team’s skill and your competition’s persistence - good SEO means continuous improvement.

Here’s how you can improve your SEO for your shop and reach a higher ranking on Google.

Start With An Audit

If you want to figure out what the best way is to increase your search engine optimization for your website, you should start out with an SEO website audit.

You need to know where you’re starting to know where you’re aiming to go and how you’re going to get there.

An SEO website audit takes an in-depth look at:
  • The structure of your website
  • How your information is laid out
  • Existing content
  • Who is linking to your site from their own website
  • What key phrases your site is ranking for
The job of an SEO website audit is to identify what areas of your website need more attention than others. This will help you develop a strategic plan to improve your SEO. The audit itself won’t improve your SEO, but it is definitely a vital aspect to improving it efficiently and effectively going forward.

Improve Your Site Navigation

Google wants to give users the best possible search engine experience they can and for this reason, they reward any site that provides users with a positive user experience (UX).

Part of making your website have a positive UX is making sure that your site can be navigated easily by your visitors. If visitors can’t find what they’re looking for within the first couple of minutes of being on your page then they’ll more than likely leave. Not only is this bad for business, it’s bad for your SEO too.

Developing a structure for your website that is both clear and easy to use is the first step in helping your customers find what they’re looking for.

You should try to make sure that any page on your website is no more than 3 clicks away from the home page.

Along with this, your navigational menu should be labeled clearly so your customers can make sense of it immediately when they arrive on your site. People who come to your website shouldn’t have to click around and waste time looking for something they need.

Get Rid Of Duplicate Content

Having duplicate content on your website can severely impact your SEO efforts in a negative way. Google rewards sites that have unique content on their pages and having the same information on multiple pages will drop your search engine ranking significantly.

If your site has duplicate content on it you’ll be penalized. This also includes content that you have copy-and-pasted from other websites. Google automatically scans your site’s content and compares it with millions of others on the web. So, if you did copy another shop’s blog post, or one of their service page descriptions, Google will know and will push your website lower on its results pages as a punishment.

Produce High-Quality Content

Having high-quality content across your website will help your business increase its SEO results. No matter what changes you make to your website’s design, structure or layout you can’t substitute high-quality content for its effect on search engine rankings.

Your content should be well researched, well-written and be useful to your target customer. If the content on your website doesn’t provide any real value for your readers then it won’t help with your search engine optimization.

One of the easiest and best ways to set up a form of content creation is to set up a blog for your shop. Here you can post regular blog articles about topics that are relevant to the industry and to your target audience.

You can start brainstorming topics with your team or think about questions your audience might have and address these questions or challenges in blog posts. This will help grab the attention of your audience and ensure that the content you’re providing to the public has value to it. This, in turn, will help increase your SEO.

Improve The Speed Of Your Website

The loading time of your site is another factor that Google will consider when ranking your website on its SERP (Search Engine Results Pages).

The longer your page takes to load the more annoyed and frustrated your customers will become, which may cause them to leave your website and go to your competitors. The less time your customers spend on your website, the lower your rankings will be on search engines.

Websites that take longer than 3 seconds to load are more likely to lose customers, so when you improve the speed of your website you’re improving your UX. This will also increase your conversion rates and your SEO too, as Google will see that your site is appealing to users.
