In short, we get *more than needed* details of how Celaena, trains in magic.
How while she's so broken inside and has lost hope, she heals with the help of her carranam. We get an idea of what the King is planning, and a clue as to where one of the wyrdkeys is.
Chaol is still learning things. He's in a conflict mentally as to who's side he's on, who he's loyal to and would fight for.
We're introduced to Aedion, Celaena's (Aelin's) cousin who is the King's General.

Hello, Aelin Galathynius.

Celaena has been sent to Wendlyn to assassinate the King and the Crown prince but what she actually intends to do is find out the answers about wyrdkeys and wyrdgates. And how the magic can be freed in order to fight against the King of Adarlan. So she goes to Maeve, Queen of the Fae, and makes a bargain. But, in order to fulfill her side of the bargain, she has to train in magic.

A world where she was no one at all.

All through her training, Celaena feels weak. She's breaking inside with the weight of past events and is losing herself. Rowan, the Fae Prince, helps her heal and trains her. And when the time comes, Celaena uses her magic to fight against the darkness the King of Adarlan is playing with. The darkness he sent towards Wendlyn.
On the other hand, Dorian, the Crown Prince, spends time with a healer, Sorscha, in the glass Castle and starts liking her. The girl knows a lot that she can use against the prince but Dorian trusts her and keeps giving away information like it's nothing.
But this healer helps Dorian in some way.
When things get worse, the King uses his own son for whatever 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘴 he has and the most Dorian is able to do is save Chaol.

Also, there are some witch scenes which are important (even boring at times) but they are part of the King's 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘴.

𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗘𝗡𝗔🔥
It would have been nice to have one person who knew the absolute truth about her—and didn't hate her for it. It would have been really, really, nice.

She's in Wendlyn, where no one knows her. Where her training means she'll get answers. But Celaena isn't over Nehemia's death or Chaol's betrayal. She isn't over the slaves she left behind at Endovier or the fact that she was ready to die there at some point. She keeps thinking of the things she's been through, the betrayal and loss she's had to live with, how she let Chaol in without ever thinking why he's loyal and serving the wicked King and she's just breaking inside. She does not want to be Queen. Rowan even asks her why she's ready to fight for others but not her kingdom, her people. I understand that she cannot bear anymore burden but after everything that has happened, how can she be hopeless? I understand she gets tired but how can she give up? And Why at book 3 are we still seeing Celaena run away from the truth if her being Queen halfway through the book? Like can we NOT have something new, something PROGRESSING like Celaena decided to be Queen to bring down the King??

—it was her most ardent and selfish wish to be ordinary, without the weight of her crown.

The thing I hated the most was that Maas had to give Celaena's training so much detail that 50% of the book she was still not ready to face the truth. All that motivation she had before meeting Maeve, was gone. And whatever relationship she was developing between Celaena and Rowan wasn't enough! This carranam thing just didn't feel as strong as it's mentioned to be!

I claim you, Rowan Whitethorn. I don't care what you say and how much you protest. I claim you as my friend.

The way Celaena said this, it felt nothing but dramatic. And when Celaena finally made use of her fire power, to fight that darkness thinking of the lives that were sacrificed to save her, so she could one day stand for others as a Queen, I felt it was too much. 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟑 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡!!!

And then Celaena set the world on fire.

Lines like this! Maas tends to write things this way a lot. End the chapter with such lines !! So EXAGGERATED!! I liked it in the start but I don't like that it's become a pattern.

𝗔𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗢𝗡🧝‍♂️
general—a man able to walk into hell itself and come out grinning.

A handsome young man! Not only that, but beautiful, though I really wish we could get more details about his character. And this scene!!

similar to what he remembered from childhood, but wrapped in mystery and secret smiles

Every time he thought of Aelin, it felt so genuine and sincere that I cannot explain. I feel like the way he loves her as his Queen is just wonderful.

When she came back, he was never letting her go.

Each and every thought that occurred in his head for Celaena was just precious to me. The faith he had in her. The joy he felt to know she's alive! Just how alive he himself felt when the word spread that Aelin was alive and in Wendlyn. How he didn't care about anything and just offered himself to the King to save Chaol for his Queen.

My only wish is to see her again. Just once, ... to see her, to know for certain that she's real—that she survived.

And when he smiled and thanked the King for murdering his people, I felt that Hard!

nothing made me feel as filthy as I did today, thanking that man for murdering my people.

There are so many lines of his that I love!

He deserved to meet her, and she deserved to have him serve in her court.

𝗥𝗢𝗪𝗔𝗡🌬️
The people you love are just weapons that will be used against you.

I did like his character but there did not seem any strong connection of him or Celaena. The way he said:
Maybe we could find the way back together
It just, it seemed incomplete.
I mean it was nice that he was finally trying to understand her and be nice to her but for a man who's lived so long, it seemed a bit off how he thinks he'll find a way back with her, when he couldn't really do so in such a long time. 😏

Ice and fire. Frost and embers. Locked in a battle, pushing and pulling.

Oh, I just loved these words. It was these words that I absolutely loved even though they're a bit exaggerated for that moment. (the pattern I was talking about) Still, the line seemed worth appreciating.

Anyways, they may be carranam but I do not ship them yet.

Sarah J. Maas
“Chaol kept his sword drawn. “I will not go to Anielle,” he growled. “And I will not serve you a moment longer. There is one true king in this room—there always has been. And he is not sitting on that throne.”
Dorian stiffened.
But Chaol went on. “There is a queen in the north, and she has already beaten you once. She will beat you again. And again. Because what she represents, and what your son represents, is what you fear most: hope. You cannot steal it, no matter how many you rip from their homes and enslave. And you cannot break it, no matter how many you murder.”

𝑾𝑯𝒀?
Because Celaena loved 𝗦𝗮𝗺. She knew it was with him she wanted to settle and share that life of freedom with.
Then came 𝗗𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻, the prince she felt so connected to.
And 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗼𝗹 felt like home. 𝑯𝑶𝑴𝑬!!! It's not a joke! He felt like home but just because of something he hid (one thing) she hates him and calls him an enemy.
And then comes 𝗥𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗻. Her 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗺. Someone she has this rare bond with. A bond which is very strong but didn't seem strong enough to me.

Oh! His character developed a hell LOT! Not only that, the way Maas wrote about him was very strong. I could actually feel him mature with time as a person, as a Prince. He was not blinded by things like loyalty and honour, he could see beyond that. He saw that more important than that is to know whether whom you're loyal to is even worthy of it or not! And the way he comprehended things regarding Celaena just had me Love him more and more. He did not judge his friends for anything. All that happened was he got hurt as any human being would when they're lied to by their friends or when they're not trusted.

The way Dorian talked to Chaol, it was amazing. He did not get personal. He just presented truth to his friend in the best possible way he could using words. I felt really really bad for Chaol but I was very happy with how our Crown Prince understood things.

This hope he had, his hope just made me feel so good! I could actually see his eyes full of it. It gave me one of the most positive vibes I've gotten reading this book.

𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙥𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙝𝙞𝙢 𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩

I was literally *SCREAMING* in my head when this happened. It was a mixed feelings moment. I could only think that:
He loved Chaol so much, he saved him and didn't care about himself.
He wanted Chaol to spread word, for people to know what happened in the Castle.
And how could Chaol just leave him?!!💔

I felt such a weight in my heart whenever I read his scenes! He is suffering so much. He's so shattered.
Not only with the knowledge that Celaena is Fae and a Queen but also that she won't pick him.

That the girl he loved wasn't there anymore. He'd lost her. He doesn't know if he should stick to her side or be loyal to the King. But whatever happens, the way Dorian saves him and the way Chaol runs, I was so so sad! Like whyyyyy did it have to happen this way? That scene in the book was just SO GOOD!

Manon Blackbeak:The Ironteeth Witch.

𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙮𝙤𝙪, 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙

She is heartless but fierce. Beautiful but deadly. She lives by the rules and has been doing so for centuries.

𝙊𝙗𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚. 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚. 𝘽𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮

But who says things can't change?
Anyway, the witches need to take back their throne and go home but since there is no magic, they can't do the things they want the way the can so the Matron bargains with the King of Adarlan. The witches will fight for the King as part of his army and in return they'll get the wyverns he's made.

Well, when I read this line I didn't think that it will awaken any emotion in Manon but I just felt like Manon would remember those words one day, and it will help her see clearly.

I laughed hard!! Like how can Maas portray a centuries old Queen so stupid and sentimental 😂😂
But Maas continues to surprise us.

message 6: by Lilly S (new)

Lilly S Wait I keep reading about an Aelin. Who is that? Is it Celaena? Also, Nehemia dies!? Alright that was my fault for reading the spoilers

Beenish Hehe .. yes. I wrote spoiler so people wouldn't read .. I hope it didn't spoil much.. I've still left a lot out :)

ally Woah, how long did it take you to write this review?

Beenish Haha it took a long time but I didn't write it in one go, I wrote it at different times :)

Veronica Carstairs I couldn’t finish this book.
I ended up donating the series to my library lol

Beenish Hahaha I totally get you. I don't think I could have finished the 4th one without my buddy reader.

Lilah "More than needed details" LMAO
You know Carranam sounds an awful lot likr CARAVAN , is it a coincidence?
I so agree with you about the whole over-describing things. Like is it really necessary though??
And don't even get me started on her training sessions!! Or more likely "meditation sessions" because she did NOTHING but sitting on her ass and complaining about how life sucks becausd woe is her 😂
Could you picture anyone yelling at a random person on thr street "I CLAIM YOU AS A FRIEND"? That would buy him/her a one-way ticket to the madhouse 😂 why be so dramatic though?

Lilah I kind of liked Adion but I haven't mentioned him in my review because I want to read and find out about him more to make up an honest opinion of him.. and I totally agree with you, his devotion to his queen and cousin was really amazing.. kind kf reminded me of Rhys though. Another leader in a troublesome position faking cruelty to save his ppl?

Lilah AND HOW WAS DORIAN ABLE TO FREEZE THE ENTIRE COURT ROOM AND INCAPACIPATE THE KING AND HIS GUARD WITH ALL THAT IRON IN HIS BLOOD ???

Beenish Hahaha oh God! I'm glad you enjoyed the review. And yes, carranam, caravan, calanmai, 😂😂😂

Yes, I agree about the similarities. There are lots. But I myself didn't think that. I only thought of Rhys when Rowan was mentioned and I was like, he's a copy of Rhys except, I like Rhys a lot better!!

That is whattttt I was thinking too!! But it's okay I think coz it's a Maas book and she'd do what she likes to justify it later. And let me tell you, sometimes she doesn't justify also. It's like, you read it, you deal with it 😂🤭

Joyce I finished this book last week, and it was hard to go through the pages! It took me some time to finish it. So many details. 😅

Beenish @Joyce, I totally understand. This book seemed to drag a lot.

Lisann My obsession with these books started with Heir of Fire! I hope you have fun with your reread :)

Beenish @Lisann, I remember you rereading this book and I thought, "why would anyone ever want to?"

But I'm rereading and I'm really feeling relaxed and enjoying it and what's more? I'm loving Manon's chapters this time so much. (On my first read, I was so bored, I loved her starting from book 4) but this reread is a nice experience so far!

Lisann @Beenish I actually haven't reread this series yet :o Maybe you mixed this up with my ACOTAR reread?
I loved Manon right from the beginning because I have a weakness for witches :D
Glad you are enjoying this more than your first read!

Beenish @Lisann, LOL! yeah, could be 😅 Manon is a QUEEN!! 💗
