Evia, also referred to as Euobea depending on the source, is the second largest island in Greece. As a result of this, there a lot of things to do. Besides lounging on the beach, visiting museums, and eating in traditional Greek restaurants, Evia also has plenty of opportunities for spending time in nature. In fact, one of the top activities to do on the island is hike, and Mount Ochi is considered to be one of the top hikes you can do. Here’s what you need to know in order to hike Mount Ochi during your stay:

Getting to Evia

Before you can actually do your hike, you need to find your way to the island. Evia has its own regional airport and there are daily flights that go there from the Athens Airport. It is also incredibly close to mainland Greece and was actually thought to be part of the mainland at on time. The fact that it is so close to the mainland indicates that it is possible to easily take a boat or ferry from the mainland. There are also ferries that leave from the main ports. Once you arrive in Evia, you might want to rent a car so that you can easily see the sites.

Stay in or Near Myli

Since the island is so large, you’ll have plenty of options in terms of where to stay. If you know that you want to climb Mount Ochi, consider staying in a hotel either in Myli or somewhere nearby. The main trail for the mountain is located in Myli and staying close to it will make your hike much more enjoyable.

What to Know to Hike Mount Ochi

In order to successfully hike Mount Ochi, which is 1398 meters, or 4587 feet high, it helps to be prepared. It is important to understand that this hike isn’t suited for everyone and it takes someone who is at least at an intermediate level of fitness in order to complete it. There are some steep areas, and climbing uphill for so long takes a certain level of physical conditioning that not everyone has. It is also a good idea to make sure you have enough food and water to make you safe. Proper clothing and footwear is also a must. You should also let someone who isn’t hiking with you where you are going in case you have a problem while on the trail.

Information About the Trail

As mentioned above, it takes an average of four hours to hike to the summit of this mountain. It should take around three hours in order to hike down. While it is possible to complete this hike in one day, it is also physically exhausting. Fortunately, there is a shelter located at about the 1000 meter, or 3280 foot, point which will enable you to spend the night on the mountain and get some rest. You can summit when you wake up the next morning and then leisurely make your way back down to Myli.
