Maya lives with her father in their cliffside home. The same cliffside where her mother lost her life twelve years earlier when Maya was a young child. Now at nineteen, Maya has given up her dreams of going to university to stay close and take care of her father, Stephen. She works at the local care home and although the job might not be what she wanted, it is ideal as it keeps her in the place she most wants to be….close to home. But, it seems Maya is keeping secrets, secrets she has never told anyone including her father. Maya is not the only one with secrets though. Stephen is keeping his own secrets as well as his co-worker, Teresa at the Wellbeing clinic where they both work. What secrets are true and better yet which one of them is telling the truth?
Wendy Clarke really leads you on a merry goose hunt with His Hidden Wife. I was really at a loss for a good part of this book going back and forth wondering who I could trust. I will admit to liking stories where the answer isn’t always right in your face and Clarke did such a fantastic job at keeping you guessing throughout most of the story. I would definitely say this story is very character driven and with that comes a very slow burn moving plot as we get to know all of the major players in the game.
I do admit trying to figure out how Teresa fits into Maya and Stephen’s story especially since the story is primarily told between Maya and Teresa in back and forth chapters. Maya, on the other hand, is not necessarily a character I enjoyed. She is rather dull and I never found myself quite warming up to her at all. She also seemed a little too much involved with her father in a sort of co-dependent and maybe a little creepy kind of way (or at least this is how I felt). Especially when Stephen lets out a little secret about Amy, his new girlfriend who looks eerily similar to maya’s mother. Yeah, that is not weird at all!
If you enjoy a slow burn story, one that will keep you on your toes, confuse you along in the process and keep you guessing all the way till the end then you do not want to miss Wendy Clarke’s newest release, His Hidden Wife.
At one point, I’ve gone cray-cray by suspecting every character, and building up my own theories about each of them, only refuted by Clarke with her brilliantly plotted twists. I couldn’t have guessed them even when my life depended on them.
This story introduces Maya, nineteen-year-old living at a house situated on the cliff top next to sea in Dorset. She couldn’t go to university as she has to take care of her father Stephen, works as an anxiety counsellor. Maya’s mother died by falling from the bluff when she was six years old and Maya was found curling up on the cliff. The death was ruled as accidental. But rumor has it that it might be suicide or someone is behind it. Clarke introduces a set of characters.
From the outset, it was revealed Maya and Stephen are hiding some secrets and Maya frets about the secrets might spill when her father introduces a new woman.
The plotting of the story is truly incredible. Clarke slowly builds tension, tantalizes readers by giving few tidbits only. I was itching to reach the last page so quickly, cursing myself for not able to read fast enough.
The atmospheric location of sea, cliff house, choppy waters added an eerie feeling and spine chilling. The story is an examination of great lengths one would go to protect the loved ones and to take revenge. Loved the great bonding between the parent and child, and child taking care of parents when their roles were reversed.
It warmed my heart reading about wonderful characters and their stories. I wanted to leap into the pages to give a hug to Maya, she is such a brilliant character. It distressed me when she was going through difficulties, decided to forgo her dreams.
Overall, HIGHLY recommend this engrossing, riveting, and unputdownable psychological thriller. Clear your day, before you start this.

Throughout the book, there are doubts and questions about the death of Cheryl: wife of Stephen and mother to his troubled daughter, Maya. She has renounced her decision to study medicine, lives at home and works in an old people’s home, so that she can be close to her father and keep an eye on him.
Enter two more women: Teresa, who works with Stephen in his counselling clinic, and Amy, a fascinating young woman, with whom Stephen has started a relationship.
The memory of Cheryl’s death haunts Maya but there are doubts right from the start in her mind. Has her Dad been honest with her about the circumstances? Maya, present at the scene, has survived the traumatic event with “the pictures Dad had painted for me.” But it’s hard to live up to a memory and she needs answers.
Wendy Clarke studied for a psychology degree and she very cleverly and convincingly takes us into the minds and motivations of these characters.
Teresa has an unhappy marriage and a troubled son and the clinic “is her place of refuge.”
Stephen is a loving father but experiences black moods for days.
Amy looks just like Stephen’s deceased wife and whilst at first Maya resents the relationship she’s having with her father, Amy manages to get close to her and seed doubts in her mind about her father and Teresa. The reader is swayed from one side to another like a tide that ebbs and flows.
The sea is in fact the only constant in this book and there are beautiful descriptions of the Jurassic Coast. Brooding and poetic lines conjure a brilliant backdrop. At the end of the book, Maya sits on her favourite bench gazing out to sea: “… the siren past calling her with sea-weed scented breath…”
I loved all the clever twists. Thankyou, Wendy Clarke, for taking me away from my troubles through your brilliant writing. Five stars, without any doubt.
