That Boy #6

That Summer

Rate this book
Devaney Diamond’s summer break was shaping up to be the best one ever. Her longtime crush was finally interested in her, and by the time school rolled around in the fall, she knew he’d be her boyfriend.

Just when their relationship is getting started, she finds out that she’s leaving on a three-week vacation to the Ozarks for some “good old-fashioned fun” with three generations of the Diamond and Mackenzie families. She’s not thrilled about being gone for that long, but she is looking forward to spending time doing nothing but getting a killer tan, finally learning to slalom ski, and hanging out with her best friend.

She and Chase have always been close. He’s cute and sweet. Smart and responsible. He’s always there when she needs him. She loves him dearly, and if it wasn’t for their age, things might be different between them.
But when Chase returns home from football camp with new muscles and a new attitude, she realizes something.
Chase Mackenzie has gotten hot.
And he doesn’t look like her little brother’s best friend anymore.

Will this be the summer that Devaney and Chase fall in love, or will it be the summer that everything falls apart?
Either way, it will be the summer that changes everything.

Chase has always been mine. He’s my best friend.

Jillian Dodd's 'That Boy' series is one of my absolute favorites. It's been almost a decade since I've read the first book, but I still remember the story and the characters perfectly. When I saw that there was going to be a book about Phillip and Jayden's son and Danny Diamond's daughter, I was ecstatic. I love these families so much and Devaney and Chase's story did not dissapoint!

Devaney Diamond has been best friends with Chase Mackenzie for their entire lives. Their parents are best friends and they've grown up together. Chase has always been that boy. That boy that was there for her no matter what. That boy she could always count on. Her very best friend. But she's never seen him as anything other than a friend. Until this summer.

The Diamond and Mackenzie families decide to take a three week long summer vacation together where they completely unplug. At first, the kids aren't excited about giving up their cell phones and not seeing their friends, but with time, they come to love the vacation. And it becomes a turning point in Devaney and Chase's relationship. It's pretty obvious that Chase has had feelings for Devaney for quite some time. To everyone except her.

Friends to lovers is one of my favorite troupes. I especially love it in YA. Chase is such a sweetheart and an amazing hero. I loved how much he adored and cared for Devaney. It took me a little longer to warm up to Devaney than Chase. She sometimes cares too much about what others think (her friends especially) but I remember how hard of an age sixteen is. I wanted these two together and rooted for them so hard.

The end of this one has me soooo ready for the next book. I can't wait! If you're looking for a fun, sweet, and beautiful friends to lovers romance look no further than That Summer!

If you are a fan of the That Boy series you are going to love this!

Chase and Devaney (Dani) have been best friends their whole life, they grew up next door to each other and are very close. Not dissimilar to the way Jadyn, Danny and Phillip were. They tell each other everything and share all their highs and lows. They are now on the verge of adulthood and life is changing for both of them. Dani will be going off to college and Chase is hoping to win a football scholarship when his turn comes around, he is younger than Dani.

The Diamond and Mackenzie families usually go somewhere amazing for their holidays, they are not short of money and travelling overseas is something they are all used to. When they gather up their children to announce where the next family holiday will be there is a bit less enthusiasm than usual. They are heading to the Ozarks to stay in an amazing house that Jadyn recently finished up designing, it happens to be owned by a close friend of hers.

This story is built around a summer holiday but it is also very much about the developing love story between Chase and Devaney. Their friendship has deepened into something more and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by either of them how much their bodies have changed. The fun and playfulness has switched into a simmering attraction. One that Chase has wanted to act on for a while now. He knows that Dani is the girl for him. When they give into what they both want it is more than they ever could have imagined and so it feels so right.

This holiday has proven that these two have an unbreakable bond that could stand the test of time. However, just because Chase is on board with living out a happy ever after, he assumes that Dani is too. Based on the summer they have had I was thinking the same thing. Dani obviously loves Chase but it feels like she isn’t truly ready for a commitment like that yet. She is too worried about what other people think and it says a lot about where she is in her head with her feelings for Chase. Will they return home happy with the memories or will they be filled with regrets from that summer?

‘He’s like a pillar of strength that I cling to while at the same time knowing I need to forge my own path to become a strong, independent woman.’

If you haven’t read any other books in this series you can read this as a stand alone duet as some of the history of this awesome family is covered off so you can get a feel for how it all began. I love how close these two families are and omg all the food was described so well I could almost taste it! There is so much more than Dani & Chase in this story that you are going to love, love! I think That Promise will be my most highly anticipated read of 2021, the countdown is on...

Sometimes you just know when a book is going to amazing or evoke strong feelings and I knew with this one. I told a friend of mine, it just looks like a really good YA and that’s what I’m looking for right now. Boy oh boy was I right!

That Summer by Jillian Dodd exceeded every expectation!! It’s fresh, fun, sweet, just an all around well written novel about finding your identity and discovering what matters most in this world.

Here’s what I loved:

Chase and Dani’s relationship is one for the record books. Seriously, Chase is utter perfection. So sweet! Always thoughtful. Just an all around amazing character! I adore him!

The nostalgic feelings of being in love and those gorgeous summers of being free and hanging out with friends and family. Those feelings were ever present while reading this book. It definitely brought up some great memories of my own summer trips and experiences from that age. In short, I found it to be a very evocative read and enjoyed it immensely!

The family dynamics are everything! Getting to know and experience the characters interactions was such a treat! They are a hoot and a half. I loved that these kids had great relationships and adults that could on yo be there for them.

Overall, I’m most impressed! I read this book as a standalone, but now have every intention of binge reading the entire series. Kudos to Jillian Dodd for penning an exceptional young adult novel that will leave readers longing for more, but in the very best way!

"I can't have me out here, holding your hand, with only half of your body next to me!" he slides his hand into the back of my hair and kisses me. "Anytime you want all of me, you let me know."

Thank you Jillian Dodd and her team for my ARC.

Well... I lived my high school experience totally wrong. Turns out hot best friends kiss, and its normal.

That Summer takes place on a joint family vacation in the Ozarks with the Mackenzies and the Diamonds. Athletes, rich, and happy families ready to spend a summer full of making memories and lots of sunshine.
Chase has loved his best friend since he can remember, and Davaney has loved him as her best friend and the person she leaned on for everything.... or is it more?

With a little jealous and some sneaking glances in bathing suits, these two may be facing their feelings A LOT sooner than they thought. This will be the summer they won't forget, the one they fell in love....
But will Chase and Dani be able to have more outside of the Ozarks... with age difference and the world outside as a high schooler seeming to stand in the way for Dani...

Jillian knows how to write a book that sucks you in and makes you find a little bit of yourself lost in the stories she creates between two love birds.
This is your first love.
The one you didn't know how to hold on to....
Beware... JD is QUEEN OF CLIFFHANGERS.

Yes... 2020 is full of them for me and I will be being for the next book.
This is the 6th book in That Boy series but can be read as a standalone. The author does a great job explaining the back story, it just may spoil the beginning of the series.

What I loved:
-Chase❤️
-The family activities and memories created
-Chase and Dani's summer romance
-Damon and Chase's friendship
- getting a throwback to being young
- I'm from Nebraska originally so the references were heartwarming for me

What I struggled with:
- some of the conversations with parent to Dani were cringy for me. I was just thinking "If an adult said these things to be at 16 I would have thrown myself off a boat 😂.
-the beginning stages of denial with Dani... I know I know she's young... we will give her a pass on her teenage emotions weighed by hormones and the desire to be popular
-the fact that its cold out, my tan has faded and a bikini is a no go for me.

“Nah. I’m good.” He smiles at me. “I like the shirt.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“I’m wearing it under protest.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He moves closer to me. “Diamond-Mackenzie Summer Camp. Ozarks,” he reads aloud. “The peach color of the sleeves looks really pretty with your hair.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Yeah, well, on its own, it’s not that bad, but when you match your grandparents and even the dogs, it sort of loses any cool factor. Oh, wait! I know!” I rush over to his desk, open a drawer, grab a pair of scissors, and pull off the shirt.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“What are you doing?” Chase asks, his eyes wide. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I look down at the bra I’m wearing. “Grow up,” I tell him. “It’s just like a bikini top.”⠀⠀

Choosing this as the first book I finish in 2021 was a mistake. I haven’t been a fan of the “That Boy” series at all, but because I started it, I feel obligated to continue reading the series.

This book follows a similar love story to that of Jadyn’s and I was already tired of it when I was reading it from Jadyn’s POV. The characters are annoying and lack depth. Some of the ideas in the book seem far-fetched to me. This book gave me big “Cheaper by the Dozen 2” vibes, but told from the perspective of the Murtaugh’s.

At the end Jillian Dodd promises that we can continue following Devaney and Chase’s love story in an upcoming book. Do I want to? Probably not. But I will because I’ve already come this far.

"Does that mean you'll come with me?"
"That means I'll go anywhere with you, Dani."

Devaney (Dani) Diamond is totally not thrilled about spending her summer with her family in the Ozarks. This trip could't have come at a worse time. Her longtime crush, Hunter, is finally interested and their relationship is just getting started when the Diamond-Mackenzie Summer Camp vacation is announced. On the bright side, she can work on her tan and hang with her BFF, Chase. Chase Mackenzie has been Dani's best friend her whole life. He is the sweetest, most thoughtful boy she has ever known. Hello! Chase has grown up. He's gone from cute boy Dani knows and loves- to something else. He's levelheaded, and he acts older than his age, and he's cool under pressure. So far, Hunter is not exactly batting a thousand. More like he keeps striking out. Will this be that summer that changed everything between Dani and Chase?

Jillian Dodd WOW! The feels! 🥺I. 🥺Am. 🥺Emotional! First, there is an ✨abundance of love ✨ in That Summer. The Diamond-Mackenzie families truly care about each other, no strings attached. "Time spent with family is time well spent". Jillian provides readers with back-story, in case bookworms have not read the That Boy series. 👏🏼 You'll be caught up! Next, can we talk about the food?😋

Homemade caramel rolls. Charcuterie boards. Crab cakes. Maple roasted bacon with truffle infused grits (say, what). Cupcakes and cookies. 🤤Nom nom nom. Chase Mackenzie. Also, nom nom nom 🤣. Swoon 🥰. He may be young but he is the ultimate cinnamon roll! If you know and love Jillian's books (🙋🏼‍♀️me), then you KNOW she is Queen of the Cliff. I'm still crying! I believe in the fairy-tale kind of love, HEA! I have proof that it exists: Jadyn and Phillip Mackenzie. Double crossing my fingers for my OTP! If you like friends-to-lovers, boy-next-door, small town romances, then That Summer is your next read! Fans of Jenny Han’s, The Summer I Turned Pretty will devour this charming story! Just grab like 3 boxes of tissues for that cliff! My heart. I heard it crack! ...And then quickly preorder That Promise!

Thank you Jillian Dodd for an advanced copy. Thank you, thank you!

This is the first book I've read in the series and I was thinking how come I've never read this series. I really enjoyed this one. The relationship between Delaney and Chase is just amazing. Both characters are so lovable. Delaney is so relatable even though she kept on thinking about what people are going to say about her and Chase if they're in a relationship. And Chase is downright sweet. He is such a good guy who puts up to her.

Overall, this is a great story and I need to read more of this series.

An adorably sweet friends to lovers YA about besties Dani and Chase and the budding romance that unfolds during a summer family vacation. A endearing coming of age story about growing up and falling in love for the first time.

Blurb: Chase and Dani have been best friends since they were born, but even though Dani is kind of seeing someone, she can’t help but notice that Chase got hotter while he was at camp! When both their families drag them away on a summer vacation, Dani starts to question everything. Is she making the right choices and does she want a serious relationship with Chase?

This book explores so much about what it’s like to grow up and deals with a lot of the issues and questions about family importance, sex, and long term goals. Although Dani drove me bonkers sometimes, there was a lot of personal growth toward the end. This book is filled with lazy summer days, first times, and all that summer has to offer. A cute read that is expressed in a very honest way.

There were some great moments and a wonderful family vacation in the Ozarks, a place that's very familiar to me, but there was a lot that just didn't feel real or easily accepted. It was great to play catch-up with Danny and Phillip and their families. I've read each of the books in the "That Boy" series and have enjoyed them all -- some more than others -- and the same goes here.

It's the second generation's time to get their story told. Dani and Chase have been best friends since they were born a year apart. High school brings peer pressures and stress and hormones -- and their best friend status is changing as well as being challenged. And dang it all, that's where the story leaves us -- hanging on a cliff until the next installment. I won't say much more -- spoilers are off limits.

Once again, it looks like I've found myself in the minority. But that's ok -- it was still fun to read. And I'll be excited for the release of the more grown up versions of Dani and Chase in The Promise in June 2021.

Mixed feelings

I really liked this book. The story was super cute and I loved all the memories from the previous books brought to us as “story telling”. Chase really is the sweetest boy ever and that brings me to the first point of why I just liked this book, not loved it. He is so sweet, such a gentleman, super adorable that I honestly don’t think Dani deserves him. OMG, that kid can do SO MUCH better than the self-absorbed, clueless, immature, coward, good for nothing neighbor of his. The book ended and I still don’t know how, just how on earth has he fallen in love with her. She had never done ANYTHING at all for his benefit! On the contrary, all she did was break his heart and, not satisfied, pulverized it. She doesn’t even care to ask him about how he’s doing, his plans and what he wants. What she knows about him is through observation, his sister and her brother, who really is his true best friend. I am not convinced that she cares for him. At all. If she did, she would have begged for his forgiveness, not hide away and pretend nothing happened. She is the oldest of the kids, but acts like a baby. And to be honest, I hope he forgets about her and marries a good woman who really appreciates and respects him. One who really shows she’s interested.
Now for the second point of why I didn’t love this book: call me old-fashioned, but I was deeply disturbed by the amount of alcohol those kids were drinking with their parents’ permission. Because it’s one thing when they sneak out to do it, we all know how teenagers can be. But when I read the parents offering beer to their kids, repeatedly I must add, all I could think of was “Where is CPS?” What’s next, a cigarette?? In my family there would never be a scenario in which grandparents and parents are all eating dinner together with the 15 year-olds drinking beer with them. There’s even a scene where Dani is drinking beer and thinking “I really like the taste of this”. Meanwhile what I was thinking was “that’s a teenager on a path to drug addiction, or at least alcoholism”. I know many will think I am exaggerating, but as a public school teacher I have seen a lot! Issues like that should not be taken lightly. And it’s contradictory even. The parents want their sons to become professional athletes and they are giving them alcohol?? Because it’s cool? Well, it’s not! Particularly with big goals like that. I did not appreciate this praise for alcohol. Not where kids are involved.
With all that, giving this book 2.5 stars is actually a lot! I really wanted to love it, because I did love all the other books in this series. However, I’m afraid that when you don’t want the main couple to be together, there’s not even a point in recommending this book or going forward to the next one. Unfortunately.

The nostalgia that I got from this book! It brought back all those sweet, warm memories from my younger summer days.

I gave That Summer 3.5 stars. This book was cute, sweet and so fun to read. Devaney Diamond, the MC, was a very relatable character for me. I saw a lot of my younger self in her and I grew a connection with her very quickly. After her parent's divorce, true love and marriage didn't seem possible to Devaney. Not until her family's summer vacation to the Ozarks. For three weeks she got to spend her summer with three generations of the Diamond and Mackenzie family, including her best friend Chase Mackenzie. Chase has been her best friend since he was born, always there for her when she needed him the most. But this summer's different. Chase grew up and the line of friendship and more starts to fade. Chase is younger though and she doesn't know what her friends would think about it. Devaney also doesn't want to risk her friendship, she is young and has so much more to experience. Being 16 isn't the time to find your true love, is it?

During her three weeks at the Ozark Daveny learns to not take things for granted and to live the life that she wants. She finally spends the summer of a lifetime. A summer that changes everything. This book is more than just a romance book, it's about life lessons, cherishing family moments, and learning what you truly want.

I love that Jillian can write relatable characters and realistic expectations. She is young and has so much ahead of her. Does she really want to start a relationship and risk the friendship with the man she always pictured marrying at 16? I felt her internal struggle and knew exactly what she was feeling when she was torn between her feelings and risking her most cherished friendship. I was right along on the family vacation swimming in the lake and drinking beer around a campfire. I felt the heartache when reality came back and they had to face the real world. Of course, Jillian likes to torture her readers so now I will be anxiously waiting for the next book following Devaney and Chase.
If you want to read a sweet, fun book that brings you back in time I recommend That Summer along with the That Boy series.

Thank you Jillian Dodd for my advance copy and for bringing me back in time.

Dani and Chase are neighbours, their parents are best friends, Chase is also Dani’s younger brother’s best friend and her best friend as well. Along with all that he is so much more to her. When he comes back from a summer camp something changes between them. Dani realises he is grown up and the feelings between them aren’t so platonic anymore. Now they are gearing up for a three week vacation planned by their families away from the city in a secluded camp house. Will it bring them closer or drive them away forever?
.
Man this book frustrated me so much but also had me giddy with feelings! Let’s start with the characters. Dani was frustrating and annoying the way she couldn’t make up her mind about Chase. I didn’t complete hate her because she also redeemed herself. She was aware of her flaws and tried to better them. She was indecisive, uncertain, confused and once she made her mind she didn’t miraculously stop being those things. She still had her doubts and all that made her real and relatable.
Chase was a the perfect embodiment of an unrequited love. He loved Dani and cared for her so much. He was always there for her as a friend, a lover, a brother and however she needed him to be. He was ambitious but not egotistical. He knew what he wanted and was ready to fight for it. I loved his character and wished we got his perspective too instead of only Dani’s, though author did a good job of making his emotions and sentiments be known to the readers.
.
The writing was captivating and engaging. I could feel the chemistry between Dani and Chase from the start and was routing for them so hard. One of the things I loved was how we got a little something of all the side characters. We got Dani and Chase’s parents story in which I was very invested and we got her grandparent’s stories as well along with snippets of Haley and Damon, their siblings life too which made the book much more entertaining. In some places Dani’s constant doubts annoyed me and the long dialogues from her family members about her following her heart came across as boring and long.
.
Despite that, I highly enjoyed it and was hooked from the start. I REALLY hate that it ended on a cliffhanger but I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

The book takes place over summer break when everything changes for Chase and Delaney. At first Delaney is not thrilled with the idea of a group break and she is prepared to hate every moment whilst Chase is full of enthusiasm. It is almost written in diary form and that makes you feel like you are there experiencing everything along with them. I enjoyed watching the grow closer but when they came home I had to remind myself how young they were as I felt so let down by Delaney. I loved Chase he was sweet and supportive and I liked Delaney until I didn't. This is only part one of their story so I am holding out hope that she works hard at redeeming herself to me in book two.

I didn't like it mainly due to forced conflicts, the bossy main lead who assumes things too soon and unsupportive family and friends. Assuming it is a romance series not a breakup story, maybe in the next book the two central characters may get back together, I seriously don't want them to end up together. The romance was unnecessarily complicated for the sake of drama and would have been better if it had been a single book with a completed story as there was actually nothing going on there story wise.

That Boy was the first book of Jillian Dodd’s that I read. She pulled me in with those characters. I absolutely LOVE this series. Now we get their kids, heck yeah!!

That Summer was such an amazing book. I had to take my time reading it. You do not want to miss this book. Danny and Philip are just as dreamy as they were in the beginning. I just love Chase! You’ll see why once you read it.

I highly recommend this book!

Y’all, Jillian captures my whole soul in every book. I finished this yesterday and I’m still thinking about it.

I feel like I have been waiting forever for Devaney and Chase. We got some teasers in That Ring and I have been impatiently waiting. Devaney and Chase have been BFFs for their whole lives...and they kiss sometimes. The main issue is that Devaney is a year older and even though Chase is hot, popular, and a football star, she feels like she can't "date down". Then a summer vacation in the Ozarks happens.

I think it was really good to have them away from home, their friends, and their phones. This way they had to focus on how THEY felt instead of how everyone else feels. Chase is such a good guy. Devaney is not a bad person, but she is a normal person I feel like. She worries about what people think of her, she's attached to her phone, she just seems like a normal high school girl in that regard. That makes it hard for me to fault her for the decisions (even the bad ones) that she makes- I feel like I've been there.

I loved the evolution of their story. My emotions were everywhere. I'm still thinking about it. I don't want to say too much about what happens, because you should read this for yourself. But THAT ENDING. I am dying. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to wait until next summer. I need more of this story.

Devaney has mixed feelings about her family’s summer vacation as it will allow her to spend time with her best friend Chase however it also means time away from her friends and that includes the boy she has been crushing on.

Chase’s feelings for Devaney run much deeper than friends so he is hoping that this summer will be his opportunity to show her how he really feels. She begins to see him as more than a friend, but will she let fear hold her back from a future with him and will this summer be all that they will ever have?

Chase knows who he wants and isn’t afraid to go after. Their journey definitely has its obstacles, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this couple.

Oh My Gosh this book was AMAZING!!!!! Seriously it has reminded me just how much I love reading young adult romance.

I have read so many books by Jillian Dodd but for some reason I have not read any of the 'That' book series and even though I haven't read the previous books it made no difference to how much I really enjoyed this book, I am totally going to rectify this soon though and have a binge of the whole series.

❤ Friends to lovers
❤ Young Adult
❤ Slow burn
❤ Holiday romance
❤ Sweet
❤ Fun times

Chase and Dani grew up living next door to each other, they have been best friends forever and tell each other everything. This year they go on a family holiday and everyone definitely gets closer with all the quality time they spend together. So much goodness comes from that trip, some real family fun and happy memories. Can this trip away and the things they have experienced come home with them or will the reality be like a punch to the face?

This book flowed so beautifully together and I adored every single one of the main characters. The story line was a lot of fun and sounded like a fabulous trip to be a part of, minus the drive there of course as I definitely suffer from travel sick haha.

That ending killed me though and I can not believe I need to wait half a year to see what happens lol, I literally gasped out loud 😂

Jillian I have loved your books for so long, thank you for having me and for the pleasure of this book ❤

I feel like I just got back from the best vacation. ☺️ Being a thirty something sloppy mom, I do have to say I found it *kind of* annoying hearing 16/17 year old Dani reiterate that she “works hard for her abs and wants to show them off.” Or how she seemed to prioritize all the wrong things at times. But . . . I love how her family challenged her to change her perspective and over the course of the summer, she grew in many ways.

For me, the highlight of this book was the family’s three week stay in a mansion in the Ozarks (which I’m familiar with and love) with all the amenities. It’s the best feeling when a book can take you away to fun places you’ll rarely be able to afford. 😅

The uncertain ending cracked my heart open, but I was relieved to see Dani & Chase’s story continues in That Promise, which of course, I’ve already started reading. 🤗

If you've been following me for any length of time, you'll already know how obsessed I am with anything @jilliandod writes. She is one of my top one-click authors. In my eyes, she can do no wrong. Lol.
With that being said, her That Boy series is probably my favorite series she's written. It will come as no surprise to you that I absolutely loved her new book, That Summer.
This book was everything that I was hoping it would be. And that is saying a lot considering how high of standards I had. I am 100% team Danny in the That Boy series, but I might have to change to Team Chase now. He's honestly just such a sweetheart and so perfect!
Jillian did such an incredible job, as usual, making me fall in love with the Diamond and Mackenzie family all over again. This book made me smile, laugh, cry, (happy and sad tears) and of courses, in true Jillian fashion, pissed me off! Lol.
That Summer follows the Mackenzie and Diamond kids one their big family summer vacation. Of course, none of the kids were excited about spending three weeks of their summer in the Ozarks with their families without their phones! You'll have to read the book yourself to find out how their vacation goes!
I'll tell you though, I am so damn excited for That Promise to come out! I need more of Chase and Devaney's story!
Thank you so much Jillian for writing this amazing story, and allowing me to read it early! And of course, thank you for sending me this beautiful paperback.

It's been forever since I have picked up this series, so I had forgotten a lot of the characters. It didn't take long to figure out what was going on.

In true Jillian fashion, she brings to life these amazing characters and makes you feel like you belong right alongside the Diamond's and the Mackenzies. There's nothing better than a summer romance especially when it's from friends to lovers. I can't wait to see where Chase and Devaney's relationship goes.

A great young love story that keeps you turning the pages.
Full of love, laughter and some twists and turns mixed with the indecisiveness of being young and in love.
Jillian has always told a great story and I can't wait to see the rest of Dani and Chase's story in That Promise!

What happens in the Ozarks...

When Chase and Devaney’s (Dani’s) families holiday together in the Ozarks there is potential for their long time friendship turn into more. However, Chase is younger than Dani so according to her it’s socially unacceptable for them to date. Even if they give into their feelings for each other, will that be enough to make a relationship work when they’re back in the real world?

Growing up Dani’s Dad, Danny, and Chase’s parents , Jadyn and Philip, were best friends. During their three week stay, Jadyn tells Dani all about the ups and downs of her relationship with Danny and Philip. I really enjoyed this as this is the first book I’ve read in the series so I appreciated the context. Those who have read the previous books would probably enjoy the trip down memory lane.

This book certainly had teenage angst covered. Dani is very much a teenage girl, worried more about what others will think than hurting someone she cares about. Chase on the other hand seems mature for his age, he puts up with a lot from Dani though. I loved Chase but I struggled with Dani at times. It’s YA but I still found it hot, even if i did have to use my imagination more than I’m used to. The book ends on a cliffhanger and I am excited for grown up Chase and Dani.

I just finished and dying a slow death over here. Just devastated. It’s a cliffy and I should have known after reading Jillian’s books for awhile that she would kill me.⁣⁣ I even slept on this before writing my review and I am still feeling all out of sorts and have a book hangover.
Chase and Delaney grew up together. Have been best friends until One Summer when things change. One thing I really enjoy about Jillian’s stories are all the imagery she details. It paints such an amazing picture and I felt like I was actually there.
These two teenagers have my heart wrapped around their fingers.
Chase.... Oh Chase..... He is a sweet, sensitive, strong boy with such a good head on his shoulders. He is the kind of guy that all girls want. The way that he has only ever had eyes for Dani.... Gahhh. Makes me wish for the days of first loves and experiences all over again. I do think that Dani has some growing up to do before she can fully appreciate him.
I equally enjoyed all of the other family members too and how all of their relationships intertwine only reminds me why this is one of my favorite series.

The That Boy series is probably one of most favorite series eveR. Jaydn and Phillip are my most favorite couple and I’ve read their three books more times than I can count. Then Danny and Jennifer got their chance and I absolutely fell in love with the idea of Chase and Devaney. When the announcement of That Summer came out earlier this year I was beyond excited and let me tell you that although this book did not end the way I would have hoped for the two childhood besties their story is not over.

I feel a little gross saying this as Chase is my sons age but I love him. He is everything that is great about Jaydn and Phillip all wrapped up together. He is so incredibly sure in his love for Devaney and quite honestly the firm does not deserve him one little bit. I had to remind myself numerous times that she is a teenager and her behavior is very much normal I still did not much like her at the end of the book but I have faith she can redeem herself. It very much is a lot like what Phillip went through to finally get Jaydn to them a chance.

Also why can’t I go to a summer camp like the one in this book. It sounds amazing. The only thing I ever got from summer camp was poison ivy and sunburn.

Now I need to get the next part of their story.

It’s so crazy good.. I have been a huge fan of this authors since I read the Keaton Chronicles . She writes young adult like no one else. A lot of this book reminded me of That Boy. It’s like remembering being 16 and trying to fit in and find yourself and falling in love. How everything seems so huge at that age, but it’s small in the grand scheme of things.

Delaney and Chase had a lot of back and forth and for being best friends, I think they should have talked more. I really hope they get things figured out .. regardless what happens I can’t wait for The Promise..I seriously laughed and cried reading this book.. for a 15 year old Chase is pretty swoon worthy just like his dad was.

I really want to go to the Ozarks. It sounds like and awesome place. There is some serious fun to be had there. I also wouldn’t mind getting an invite to their family vacay.

Delaney really needs to grow a back bone and have some confidence. She cares too much about what people think and I know that’s most teenagers but it’s so sad . I felt super bad for her and Chase.
This book was so good.. I recommend this young adult book to anyone .. I can’t wait to see how the story plays out .
