From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Probst comes a new story in her Stay series.

Jonathan Lake is the beloved NYC mayor who’s making a run for Governor. His widowed status and close relationship with his daughter casts him as the darling of the press, and the candidate to beat, but behind the flash of the cameras, things are spinning out of control. It all has to do with his strait laced, ruthlessly organized assistant. Her skills and reserved demeanor are perfect to run his campaign, but her brilliant brain has become a temptation he’s been fighting for too long. Can he convince her to take a chance on a long-term campaign for love or will his efforts end up in scandal?

Alyssa Block has admired the NYC mayor for a long time, but her secret crush is kept ruthlessly buried under a mountain of work. But when they retreat to an upstate horse farm for a secluded weekend, the spark between them catches flame, and Jonathan sets those stinging blue-eyes on winning her. Can she convince him to focus on the upcoming election, or will she succumb to the sweet promise of a different future?

Sigh... I just love this series. Steamy addition!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are some authors that you’re just drawn to because of the way they write. Their stories are always upbeat, even when there’s trials and tribulations. You know you’ll get that happily ever after even if you have to go through a little bit of stuff to get there.
I especially enjoy the Stay series because of the great connection in love between the characters. I am always waiting with anticipation for the next story.
This novella is a beautiful addition to the series. It’s long enough that we get to know the characters. It’s long enough to add a bit of drama and to engage in that beautifully fierce family connection. It's also long enough to come out on the happy side with the love we want to see, along with all of the feels.
Jennifer Propst has a beautiful knack of writing compelling stories that are rich with steamy emotion and dripping with heart. It’s no wonder that she has me addicted to her books. I can never get enough.
If you haven’t read the Stay series, what are you waiting for?
Jonathan Lake is a widowed single man, with a grown daughter he adores. He’s also considered the most eligible bachelor in New York. He is the mayor of NYC, and a politician the press loves. As a workaholic, it’s been a long time since he was truly interested in a woman, but lately he’d started to think of his assistant as more than just his employee.
Alyssa Block is an organized, brilliant executive assistant and advisor. Jonathan has worked with her for two years, and their relationship has been strictly business with no entanglements. She runs his office, his schedule, and his entire life like a well oiled machine. He found her fierce, intelligent, and endlessly fascinating. She was irreplaceable, and challenged him in every way. They spent hours together and made the perfect team, but somewhere along the way, feelings developed. He’d been fighting temptation for too long, and lately felt his last ounce of self control shattering. He decides he will regret it if he doesn’t at least try, and he wants a chance to show her how good they’d be together.
Alyssa loves her job, but lately her attraction to her gorgeous, charming boss feels consuming. They’ve always been careful not to cross that line, and she’s kept her crush a secret. They shared a mutual respect, but lately she craved more. When they take a trip together to a secluded horse farm upstate, she finally surrenders to the connection they share, but the pressure is on when they learn Jonathan is a front runner for governor. With too much to lose, will they risk it all for love, or get caught up in scandal?
-Alyssa was different. His interest and emotions had grown steadily, until one day, it felt as if he'd been moving toward her the entire time.
-He ached to have the right to touch her.
-His entire body vibrated with a leashed power she craved to let loose.
-He kissed her like she was the only woman he'd ever wanted.
Something Just Like This (A Stay Novella) by Jennifer Probst is a 1001 Dark Nights standalone story. It’s a sexy office romance with a second chance at love. I was excited to get a story for Jonathan, and had no clue he was so delicious! I really loved this book. Super steamy, and a wonderful read! I look forward to Chloe and Owen’s story next!
This series has been on my radar for a while and altho my initial intent was to binge read it for this release, that was a bit of a stretch for me lol However, I have started the series so there’s that LOL But I digress. I say this to you, so you know that if you’re like me, and have not read this series yet, there’s nothing wrong with picking up this story and reading it now. I was fine with it and I’m picky as hell!
Sweet and engaging and full of heart. I loved the glimpse into the characters I haven’t read yet. I really like Jennifer’s style of storytelling. It’s emotional without being gut-wrenching and always full of heart!
Something Just Like This
A Stay Novella
By: Jennifer Probst
*REVIEW* ❤❤❤❤
I'm always glad to read a 1001 Dark Nights novella, and Something Just Like This is a great addition to the collection. Jonathan is a widow of five years with a daughter, and he's the mayor of New York City. He loves the city and takes his job seriously, but he doesn't work alone. While Jonathan lives in the public eye, his assistant, Alyssa, is the behind the scenes wizard with all the information. She has no desire to live in the spotlight and is quietly content with her books and a simple life. Jonathan relies on her as his right hand woman, and they share an efficient working relationship. Now, Jonathan has been asked a monumental task-to run for governor. He will be more scrutinized than ever before, and appearances mean everything. Alyssa must be at her absolute best at all times. There is just one little problem. Jonathan can no longer deny his growing attraction to Alyssa, and as it turns out, she is also attracted to him. It's a terrible conundrum. Regardless of how Jonathan or Alyssa feel, he is still running for governor, and she is still his assistant. Is it better to just go public with this, pretend like it never happened or walk away? An argument can be made either way. This story is sweet, relatable, entertaining and compelling. The characters felt genuine, and I found them very likeable and intelligent, especially with the weight of such heavy decisions. I just wanted everything to turn out fine. Jonathan and Alyssa are perfect together, professionally and personally, but it's impossible to have it both ways. It's a bit of a heartache watching the situation play out, but I loved it just the same. The plot has just the right amount of tension and romance and is the perfect length- an overall excellent read!
Mayor Jonathan Lake is wondering if he should run for governor. He can count on his assistant of the last two years to advise him on her opinion. But lately, Jonathan have started to see her in an other way and is curious to learn more about her. She's not his usual type but he likes that she's not like all the others.
Alyssa Block can't remember when the respect she have for her boss turned into something else. But she doesn't want to start an affair or a relationship that could ruin his chances of becoming governor. Or is it the only reason why she doesn't want to take a chance on love?
I liked how smart and intuitive Jonathan was about the way he deal with his feelings for his assitant. There's nothing in this that was about power-trip nor ego. He was simply an authentic and honest man. I find it funny that I share the heroine's name because I have a lots of traits in common with her as well. Being serious, a loner, someone who doesn't take risks. I love when an author write about atypical people (and I think it's always more risky with female characters) and JP did it brilliantly.
If you read the previous books, you'll be happy to see again beloved characters in this novella.
REVIEW: SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS by Jennifer Probst is a contemporary, adult, erotic, romance story line in her STAY series, and the latest addition to the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights series of novellas. This is PA Alyssa Block, and NYC mayor Jonathan Lake’s story line. SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary. We were first introduced to Chloe in book one THE START OF SOMETHING GOOD, and Jonathan Lake in book three All Roads Lead to You.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Jonathan and Alyssa) SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS follows the friends to lovers, employee/boss relationship between PA Alyssa Block, and NYC mayor Jonathan Lake. Alyssa Block has been Jonathan’s Lake’s PA for close to two years and in the ensuing time, Jonathan has never made his attraction to Alyssa known. When Alyssa brings a ‘date’ to a fund-raising event, Jonathan struggles to keep his jealousy reigned in. A late night car ride finds Jonathan revealing his true feeling, feelings returned by our story line heroine. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Jonathan and Alyssa, and the potential fall-out when Jonathan’s run for governor threatens their fledgling relationship.
Jonathan Lake is a widower with a college aged daughter but our hero believed he had lost his happily ever when his wife died years before. No longer fighting his attraction to his PA Alyssa Block, Jonathan makes his feelings known only days before announcing his plans to run for governor.Alyssa Block hides behind a mask of professionalism but struggles between head and heart when Jonathan suggests they take their relationship to the next level. Having fallen in love with Jonathan months before, Alyssa quickly discovers that their romance is about to become fodder for the media and jealous ex-lovers.
The relationship between Jonathan and Alyssa Is a slow burn of attraction and desire.Biding his time, Jonathan starts a slow seduction of our story line heroine, a seduction that quickly turns into something more. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top , sexually graphic language and text.
Most of the previous story line couples plays secondary and supporting characters when the Thanksgiving holiday brings together family and friends.
SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS is a story of family, friendships, romance and love. The premise is engaging and captivating; the characters are colorful and sassy; the romance is seductive. SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS is a wonderfully entertaining addition to Jennifer Probst’s STAY romance series.
Sometimes what you really need in your life is just right in front of you.
Jonathan is the mayor of New York City and hopefully soon the governor of the state after the next election. His life is full of public moments that make him feel under a microscope at all times. Being a widower and having raised a daughter, he dedicated his life to serving the public. Now as he reassess his life, the personal loneliness and lack of intimacy is making him feel he is missing out on life.
Alyssa is his personal assistant. As such, she knows what he needs before he even thinks about it. Theirs is a professional and efficient relationship. Although she has fallen in love with him, she would never admit it. She loves him for his kind heart and dedication to the city. She also adores his daughter and has served as best friend at times. Sometimes a girl needs someone that can understand all the emotions that come with sharing your father to the demanding public.
This book is the story of Jonathan and Alyssa's romantic love affair and all the complications that come with it. Lovely story!
I am voluntarily reviewing this book. Thanks to the author for sharing a copy with me.
Something Just Like This is a stand-alone novella in the Stay series by Jennifer Probst. The characters from the other books appear in this book and it was a nice way to catch up to them. Hei-Hei, once again, stole the spotlight.
The story had the perfect length and it wasn't too fast or too slow for me. When the length and the pace are so good as they were in this book, there is not much that can go wrong. The characters were both great and I would love to see more of them in Chloe's book. From the blurb at the end of this book, I gathered that Chloe's book will be set years in the future and hopefully by then Jonathan will be the governor. I really hope Jonathan and Alyssa will appear there.
I don't think we were ever told how old our characters are and that bugs me a little bit. I read the book in a little sleep-deprived mode so I might have just missed that.
The rest of the book was simply perfect and I would certainly recommend it!
Opening a Jennifer Probst read is like getting a glimpse into her heart. The ricochet effect will have you feeling the love almost as quickly as it takes to turn the page. Something Just Like This is no exception. Despite the characters being more mature, the emotions are just as valid. Jonathan finds himself at a crossroads between career and love. Will he take the risk of exposing his heart or dedicate his life to following his dream? For Alyssa and Jonathan love is a temptation that refuses to be denied. It will take a ton of sacrifice and maybe more than a little faith to make their relationship work. More sweet than sexy, but isn't that what the heart is all about.
Another landslide in the Stay Series!
Jonathan Lake, the sexy widower running for mayor of NYC, leapt of the pages of The Start of Something Good and now he’s running for Governor with his eye on his perfect First Lady! Alyssa and Jonathan were so vulnerable and perfect for each other that I could barely put the book down to go to work.
I adored the chemistry, emotion, and sense of family that have become the hallmarks of this series and absolutely canNOT wait for Chloe and Owen’s story!
NYC Mayor Jonathan Lake is the type of mayor I'd love to have in my own town. Talented, a people-person, and a crusader, the fact that he's gorgeous, smart, and witty doesn't hurt either! WIdowed for 5 years, he's lived his life for his job and making the city - and the world- a better place. Now, he's poised to run for governor of the state he loves. Surrounded by exceptional people who support and help him run the city, the path to the governor's house looks like it's smooth sailing. Except for one thing: One of those people surrounding him has become to mean more to him than they should. Jonathan's torn between confessing his feelings and keeping quiet. Jonathan lives in a public world where is private life is anything but.
Jonathan's personal assistant, Alyssa Block is smart, cool under pressure and wears the motto "never let them see you sweat" like makeup. A master at hiding what she's thinking-and feeling -Jonathan is afraid to tell her how he feels about her because she's never given any indication she thinks of him as other than her boss, the mayor. Alyssa may work for the public man of the people, but she protects her privacy with her everything in her and doesn't want a public life. She's very happy being a behind the scenes type of girl and she doesn't want any hint of scandal to ever touch the mayor, especially in the era of #metoo. She'll protect Jonathan with everything in her and deny what she feels for him just so he can attain his full potential.
But emotions have a way of coming to the surface and when these two finally acknowledge what's growing between them, it's a test of their strength and a battle of wills to give in to those emotions or continue to hide them from the world.
This is a short Probst story that has many of the previous STAY characters make appearances, including one of my favorites, Jonathan's daughter Chloe. Told with her usual feel for deep emotion, witty banter, and exceptional characterizations, SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS is SOMETHING ALL HER FANS will want to read. I devoured the work in an afternoon because I didn't want to put it down. I love rooting for a hero and heroine like Jonathan and Alyssa, two people who put the needs of others before their own.
I was graciously given an arc of this work by the author to read and all opinions are my own. But this is a book all romance readers will enjoy. 5 well deserved stars from me for a book that filled my heart.
M/F Romance
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
This is a novella and is very much a part of a series. And, while you don't necessarily need to read the other books to know what's happening in this one, I highly recommend reading them. They make this novella that much stronger.
Jonathan is the mayor in New York City. He loves what he does and really wants to make his city a better place. He has been widowed for five years and in that time, he's tried to bury his grief in his work. He also had to re-work his relationship with Chloe, who we met in a previous book. Now that he has a handle on his job and his home life, he knows that he wants something more.
Alyssa is amazing at her job. She can multitask and handle a crowd whenever she's called to do so. But, she has always had a crush on her boss and over the years, it's only gotten stronger. Alyssa loves her job and doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize it. She'll just continue to push down her feelings and do her job.
After a benefit that left both Alyssa and Jonathan flustered, these two will have to decide if they can take the leap and allow their mutual attraction to blossom. Jonathan knows what he wants. He wants Alyssa. But, Alyssa will have to decide whether or not love is worth the risk. Can Chloe and Jonathan show Alyssa that it is? Or will she be destined to pine for Jonathan as she helps him with yet another campaign?
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
This book 3.5 in the series - I think you can certainly enjoy it as a stand-alone, but once you have met the human and animal inhabitants of Hudson Valley, I am sure that you will be intrigued by their stories too.
Although this is a novella, it is a very satisfying read. Jonathan and Alyssa have worked together for the last couple of years and spend a lot of their time together. Both have been feeling much more than professional interest in each other, but the public nature of Jonathan's life would make even thinking about having a relationship dangerous. This set up means that they can jump over any concept of insta-love, rather it is admita-love ... but is that enough, and is life in the public eye too much for the very reserved Alyssa.
Their weekend at the B&B with the rest of the "Stay" family is a wonderful oasis in the crazy of public life, and gives them and us a chance to see how they could be.
I loved the mixture of politics, and country; of family and public responsibilities; but most of all I loved that the interactions between Jonathan and the very well read Alyssa. I am very much looking forward to Chloe's story.
Jonathan is the Mayor of New York who has been approached to run for Governor. His wife passed away five years earlier and since then he has been involved in a couple of relationships but nothing serious. Lately he can’t stop thinking about his assistant Alyssa and she inspires feelings in him that he hasn’t felt for a long time but he is uncertain if she feels the same.
Alyssa is his assistant who always has the answer he needs, and her mind is filled with intriguing facts. She is attracted to her boss not only because of his sexy good looks but also because of the way he serves his constituents. The more time they spend together the more her feelings grow but she knows it could be career suicide for both of them if they cross that line.
Once Jonathan finds out she feels the same way about him that he feels about her he wants to pursue the feelings they have for each other but will he be able to convince her that the feelings they have for each other are worth the risk?
It was great to not only watch the relationship between Alyssa and Jonathan unfold but to catch up with the other characters of this series. There was no doubting that these two belong together and make the perfect power couple.
I love all of Jennifer’s books, but this book is so good. I love a vulnerable and sexy hero, and match him with a strong, smart and independent woman and it grabs me.
Jonathan Lake was a favorite of mine fr9m the beginning in Mia’s story, his widowed status, politician, dealing with a good but troubled daughter just made him so relatable. A dysfunctional hero who finds his weakness and overcomes it and in the process wins the election and his daughter back......what more could you want from a hero.
Alyssa Block has been the perfect assistant since she started working for Jonathan, she’s efficient, smart, organized. Everything Jonathan needs in his professional life to succeed. But the long nights of working with each other and complimenting/balancing out each other’s work lives, slowly leads to admiration, then attracts action, then affection
I loved how this story was spun together, making the hero vulnerable to the woman he has fallen for but leaving it in her hands to move the relationship forward.
As always, there’s a happy ending, there are updates from all of the previous characters in the Bishop family and there is a great epilogue taking you into the future.....
Something Just Like This packs a HUGE punch and I love that it is named after one of my favorite Chainsmokers' songs that is even mentioned IN the book! It might be a pretty fast read, but it was an enjoyable one!
This is not a cut and dry romance, our main man is not only the Mayor of New York, but he is also about to be announced as running for Governor of the state as well. He is a widower and is trying to fight his attraction to his assistant, which is a big no no in the political world, even if it is not as nefarious as others might see it. Take into consideration that Alyssa would never let anything come in the way of his office, she is also a little different, but that makes her special as well.
All in all if you are looking for a quick read with some well thought out characters, this is a good book for you to check out! I have not read the other books in the series and I did not feel as if that hindered my reading, but I think you might like it just a smidge more if you do!
PS: Thank you to Jennifer Probst and Inkslinger PR for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!
Something Just Like This is a short novella that features characters from Jennifer Probst’s Stay series. Jonathan and Alyssa were a perfect working tandem and for the last two years it was all professional between them. But something changed, for Jonathan being a widower of 5 years, pursuing flings and short term relationships has never interested him. He was fine on his own until he started seeing Alyssa in a whole new light. Alyssa loves her job and prefers to keep things on a nonpersonal level for a man she admires but when attraction starts popping its delightful head, can this introvert bear the scrutiny of a very public life? This might be a short and sexy romance but Something Just Like This discusses real life issues about work place romance and how a public figure might navigate having a romantic relationship. This book is guaranteed enjoyment with a dose of realistic situations.
Something Just Like This is a wonderful novella and the type of story that will make you believe in finding love again. Jonathan Lake is the fictional mayor of NYC and Alyssa Block has been his assistant but more than that his trusted right hand for 2 years. 5 years ago Jonathan lost his beloved wife to cancer and after that he threw himself into his job and left little for the rest of the world. His relationship with his daughter suffered in the past but over time he has prioritized her and they are now in a good place. He is now thinking about who else he would like to make a priority in his life and without realizing it, Alyssa is a major part of his life and he would like to explore this attraction further. The problem, he has been asked to run for governor of New York and he doesn't know how the public will take the change in their relationship. Alyssa is still in shock that Jonathan is interested in her because she's a focused, quiet person and not one to enjoy the public eye and that is where Jonathan spends most of his life. A little time spent at the Robin's Nest B&B over Thanksgiving might be just what these two need to find a way to let love lead the way. I adored this sweet story and I recommend the other Stay novels as well.
Short and sweet, plus it's a great read if you're a fan of the series. So, I have go off and say that I'm still questionable about how all the books in the 1,001 Dark Nights can be read as a standalone. I guess technically it's true, but all these novellas are definitely more enjoyable if you've read from the series.
I did find this one enjoyable, but I didn't love it as much as the other books in this series. I truly loved that there wasn't any hidden agendas with the main characters. These two knew what they wanted and no matter, how bad Jonathan wanted things to happen. I liked that Alyssa was more level-headed about it even though I kept shouting, "just do it!".
Something Just Like This is definitely a great addition to this series and I can't wait to read more!
4.5 stars
The only reason why I didn't give this 5 stars is because politicians aren't for me. BUT. BUT. I'm so glad to finally read about Jonathan (i.e. Chloe's poor misguided dad from The Start of Something Good) getting his HEA!
I LOVED the chemistry and banter between Jonathan and Alyssa. And how the office place, boss / employee dynamics were handled with tact! AND AND how their story is brought back to the cosy, cosy world of the Bishop siblings????? Reading this felt so much like returning home to a group of close friends and family. I loved how we got to see the past couples banter with one another and live their happy lives.
Hopping on to Chloe's story PRONTO.
The last thing Jonathan Lake needs while trying to go from NYC Mayor to the state's governor is for the feeling he has tried to hide to come front and center. Alyssa Block has been his assistant for years and he cannot even comprehend trying to win the Mayoral race without her. But when push comes to shove and passion between the two ignites can the race be saved? Or will the addition of a soulmate be just the thing to push his career further? I loved these two from the opening pages and it was great to revisit with characters from previous books. Family and love shine through in every part of the story. Once again, Jennifer Probst does not disappoint.
It's absolutely amazing to me how Jennifer Probst can squeeze out every possible romantic emotion even in the length of a novella. True disclosure, I don't usually like novellas. But with Probst's talent it doesn't feel like a novella. It feels like a full-length story. Jonathan & Alyssa's story is beautifully written with all the feels and challenges of any relationship. But they have an added challenge of being in the political eye. Alyssa is afraid, and rightly so, of being ripped to shreds by the media and being accused of "sleeping her way to the top". On top of that, she doesn't want to lose herself or feel the need to change for anyone, including Jonathan. Because this story is set in the Stay series, a lot of old friends from that series are here, including my favorite polish chicken :). Another must-read by Jennifer Probst.
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, pain, secrets, second chances, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
The Start of Something Good (Stay #1)
A Brand New Ending (Stay #2)
All Roads Lead to You (Stay #3)
This is Alyssa and Jonathan’s story. Alyssa is Jonathan’s assistant. But secretly she has crushed on him for a while. But no he is about to run for Governor so she needs to shut down her feelings. But too bad Jonathan has finally noticed her and wants to pursue something with her. Can they have a relationship, or will someone try and ruin that for them? In the end will they be together or father apart?
I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I highly recommend this book.
This novella is a great addition to the series. We meet Mayor Jonathan in the first book of the series, but he stays in the background up until now. A widow for 5 years, he hasn't wanted to have another relationship. His assistant Alyssa suddenly starts to look more like a great friend. Could there be something more?
Alyssa is perfect for Jonathan except for the whole him being her boss thing. I liked that she tried to stay true to herself and was willing to for go her heart in order to protect Jonathan's image. Going away for Thanksgiving sealed the deal.
Sweet romance. A bit of intrigue but nothing too angsty. Great meddling friends and family. Just a perfect holiday read.
Geesh Jonathan has his work cut out for him with his woman, “it’s not like that, and you know it. You’d be my lover. My girlfriend. My cherished partner. Take your pick.” I liked this book, I loved Jonathan.
I love this series and this novella is a sweet story for Chloe's dad, the Mayor of NYC, Jonathan Lake to find his happiness. Alyssa has been his assistant for 3 years and they have both been suppressing their feelings. Loved the patience and respect that Jonathan has. So glad they got to take a trip to the farm. Any time with Hei-Hei is always a good thing. I love this family!
I’m frequently iffy about novellas, especially romance novellas, but Jennifer Probst’s Something Just Like This may convert me to being on the more positive side because she knocks this romantic novella out-of-the-park.
Alyssa has been Mayor Jonathan Lake’s assistant for over two years. They’ve grown comfortable with each other, although never crossing any lines. But now, suddenly, they realize how attracted they’ve become to each other. Jonathan’s been selected to be his party’s candidate for Governor. Can they risk a relationship?
I quite enjoyed the Something Just Like This but the part I was looking forward the most was cut off and skipped for an epilogue that was happening one year later. Disappointing.
This is such a great read. The plot flows perfectly. The writing hooks you from the very beginning. I adore the characters and how they connect with one another. This is not like the other office romances out there it's got more emotion and depth. This is one book you need to get your hands on.
