BASSINTHEGRASS - Meg Mac

It’s been a rollercoaster few months for the Sydney songstress Meg Mac.

 By Tamara Howie

Mac is currently traversing the nation on her ‘Give Me My Name Back’ tour while preparing for the release her album, Hope, in June. But amid the chaos she's excited to head to Darwin for a beach-side gig at BASSINTHEGRASS, with an epic line-up including Amy Shark, Ball Park Music, Caiti Baker and Karnivool.

You’re on a huge tour at the moment, while still releasing singles and your upcoming album - how are you feeling juggling it all?

It’s exciting and a little bit scary as well, but I’m so glad I’m on tour at the same time as the release because it reminds me why I do what I do.

When I’m on stage singing, it all makes sense, and I don’t think too much about the release or what’s going to happen because I’ve got a show to do.

Will your festival gig at BASS in Darwin be a bit different than the tour?

I’ll have to re-think a few things because it’s going to be an outdoor festival at the beach. I’ll try and do something special.

Your new album, Hope, is coming out in June, can you tell us a bit about it?

It’s named after one of the songs on the album – it’s a sad song. It’s about the flip side of hope, where it can be desperate, sad and almost a curse. I feel like everyone knows that feeling – we’re all living in hope for something.

Were you hoping for something when you wrote it?

I had this novel on my piano when I was writing this song, which had this painted portrait of a woman on the front and she looked sad and defeated, but there was something about her that looked hopeful.

I thought I was writing it about this woman, but now I’ve started playing it on tour, I think I wrote this about myself.

Maybe it’s hard to admit, but I feel like we’re all hoping for something to change or happen.
