Two new adult corrections programs will increase safety for the public and offer supports for offenders. The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, today announced the reintroduction of electronic monitoring and a new bail supervision program.

Electronic monitoring will see ankle bracelets used to enhance supervision of offenders, increasing accountability while keeping victims safe. Devices are currently being tested to determine which technology will work best in this province and over the next several months, a decision will be made identifying target offender groups who will qualify for the program.

Bail supervision gives judges another option for supervising offenders instead of remand. The intent is to increase the number of individuals eligible for bail and support accused in securing housing and a surety, reducing the burden on correctional institutions while maintaining community safety.

Electronic monitoring and bail supervision are complementary programs supported by a Budget 2019 investment of $354,000. This strategic investment is another example of the Provincial Government’s balanced approach to fiscal management, with a focus on advancing important programs to support safer communities and improving access to services.
