Celebs Who Have Had Actual Ghost Encounters

Don't try to tell these stars that ghosts don't exist, because they've seen all the paranormal proof they need to believe

Believe it or not, few people think paranormal activities are just the thing of scary movie fodder.

According to a 2021 OnePoll study commissioned by Phantom Wines, more than half of Americans (57 percent) think ghosts are real, and at least two in five people (44 percent) have reported a personal experience with the other side. So it's not so shocking to hear someone say they have or know someone who has encountered ghosts — and celebrities are no exception.

While stars like Demi LovatoKesha and Kendall Jenner have claimed to have had positive experiences with the other side, some celebrities' encounters were not so pleasant. Just ask Jessica Alba and Miley Cyrus, who would probably rather forget ever meeting such unfriendly spirits.

Hudgens added that she uses a "spirit box," which has helped her analyze "radio frequencies really quickly."

"Something about the electricity that it creates allows spirits to speak through it," she explained.

"Because I've suffered loss, I believe that people don't go away; they just transform into different energy. So I definitely think there's all kinds of good energy, blessed energy, in this house."

Noting that she has "never once" felt "frightened" while living in her home, Medley continued: "Have I felt, like, the presence of [my late husband] Richard or the presence of maybe, you know, someone that I think loves me, a guard? … Yes."

"Last night, I actually was like, 'God, I kind of feel this guardian angel thing going on.' But that makes me happy," she added. "Wouldn't it be sad if we just thought this was it? You know?"

Lovato shared that her childhood home in Texas housed a ghost in a 2013 article the singer contributed to BuzzFeed.

"My house in Texas is so ridiculously haunted," she wrote. "Not by a bad spirit, but a little girl. I think her name is Emily. I've had a medium come over and ghost hunters, and they both told me the same name, Emily. There were so many times that I saw her when I was growing up."

Lovato continued, "I believe that everyone can tune into that part of their mind. I think I have a really strong connection to the afterlife … When I walk into a room, I can tell if something has happened there or not or if a hotel is haunted."

As she prepared to take over Vanessa Kirby's portrayal of Princess Margaret on season 3 of The CrownHelena Bonham Carter sought approval straight from the late royal herself, with the help of a psychic medium

"My main thing when you play someone who is real, you kind of want their blessing because you have a responsibility," Bonham Carter said at the Cheltenham Literature Festival in 2019, per The Guardian.

Bonham Carter continued, "She said, apparently, she was glad it was me ... 'You're better than the other actress' … that they were thinking of. They will not admit who it was. It was me and somebody else. That made me think maybe she is here, because that is a classic Margaret thing to say. She was really good at complimenting you and putting you down at the same time."

Queen Elizabeth II's outgoing younger sister also had a word of advice for Bonham Carter.

"Then she said, 'Get the smoking right. I smoked in a very particular way … the cigarette holder was as much a weapon for expression as it was for smoking,' " the English actress recalled of Margaret.

Megan Mullally believed a house she and husband, Nick Offerman, once lived in was haunted by the spirit of Nicole Brown Simpson, the ex-wife of former NFL star O.J. Simpson, who was murdered in 1994.

"It wasn't the same house, but it was on the same property where had once stood a house that O.J. Simpson had rented for Nicole Brown Simpson," the Will & Grace star said during an appearance on Busy Tonight in 2018. "We would have in that house, in one corner of the house, like maybe where the bedroom used to be in the old house, we would have all these sounds and weird things all the time. I would be like, 'That's Nicole, and she's pissed because Nick doesn't get it.' "

Mullally believed the spirit settled down after Offerman watched documentaries and the American Crime Story series about her murder. "Ever since then, no more sounds," she said. "She just needed Nick to understand what happened."

On an episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast, Dale Earnhardt Jr. opened up about a strange encounter when the conversation shifted to ghosts and spirits.

"When I wrecked in the Corvette in 2004 in Sonoma, and it caught fire, somebody pulled me out of that car," Earnhardt Jr. recounted. "And I thought that it was a corner worker because I felt somebody put their hands under my armpits and pull me out of the car. I didn't get out. I don't have any memory of myself climbing out of the car."

He continued: "And I remember sort of moving like in motion, like going to lean forward and try to climb out of the car, and then something grabbed me under the armpits, pulled me up over the door bars, and then let go of me. And I fell to the ground, and there's pictures of me laying on the ground next to the car. I know that when I got to the hospital, I was like, 'Who pulled me out of the car? I gotta say thanks to this person,' because it was a hand! It was physical hands grabbing me! I felt it. And there was nobody there."

The moment, Earnhardt Jr. said, "would be probably the closest thing" to a paranormal encounter he has experienced — "if it's real."

Initially skeptical, Laura Linney became a believer after meeting one of the famed ghosts of Broadway's Belasco Theatre.

"It's absolutely haunted," she told host James Corden on The Late Late Show in 2017 of her former workplace. "I was not a believer. I had been told about the ghosts at the Belasco. There was a mysterious death of a chorus girl [at the theater]. Legend is that [during] final dress rehearsals, that's when the ghosts come out. I had forgotten this, and I was doing a play with Jane Alexander, and I turned to Jane Alexander, and I looked up to the upper balcony — there are two balconies there — and the upper balcony you can only get in from the outside, and those doors were locked, and I looked up, and there was a woman standing in the front row looking over with a blue dress and blonde hair. I just thought, 'Well, hello!' I looked back at Jane, and I looked back up, and she was gone."

The Ozark actress was further convinced that it had been a paranormal experience when she confronted the theater's house manager.

"I went to the house manager, and I said, 'Joe, I think I saw a ghost.' And he went, 'male or female?' I said, 'female.' And he went, 'blue dress, blonde hair?' "

The next night, we wanted to go to Stull Cemetery, which is known as one of the seven gates to hell on Earth … I felt this sick, overwhelming feeling of negativity over the whole car, and we smelled sulfur, which is the sign of a demon, and there was a fly in the car randomly, which is another sign of a demon."

Grande continued: "I was like, 'This is scary, let's leave.' I rolled down the window before we left and said, 'We apologize. We didn't mean to disrupt your peace.' Then I took a picture, and there are three super distinct faces in the picture — they're faces of textbook demons."
