Death by China: Confronting the Dragon - A Global Call to Action

Rate this book
The world's most populous nation and soon-to-be largest economy is rapidly turning into the planet's most efficient assassin. Unscrupulous Chinese entrepreneurs are flooding world markets with lethal products. China's perverse form of capitalism combines illegal mercantilist and protectionist weapons to pick off American industries, job by job. China's emboldened military is racing towards head-on confrontation with the U.S. Meanwhile, America's executives, politicians, and even academics remain silent about the looming threat. Now, best-selling author and noted economist Peter Navarro meticulously exposes every form of "Death by China," drawing on the latest trends and events to show a relationship spiraling out of control. " Death by China" reveals how thousands of Chinese cyber dissidents are being imprisoned in "Google Gulags"; how Chinese hackers are escalating coordinated cyberattacks on U.S. defense and America's key businesses; how China's undervalued currency is damaging the U.S., Europe, and the global recovery; why American companies are discovering that the risks of operating in China are even worse than they imagined; how China is promoting nuclear proliferation in its pursuit of oil; and how the media distorts the China story--including a "Hall of Shame" of America's worst China apologists. This book doesn't just catalogue China's It presents a call to action and a survival guide for a critical juncture in America's history--and the world's.

3.5 stars.

Due to my own stupidity my old review is deleted, I need to re-write this review.

What happens in China doesn't just stay in China, do remember this.

The author detailed the environmental problem , social and political problem, violations of human rights and civil rights in the mainland China society under CCP's rule. Although these problems (e.g. the suppression of Uighurs, Mongolians, Tibetans, Muslims and Christians, the threat  against Taiwan, etc) are just common knowledge if you happen to live near China and/or in Asia, still I'm stunned that people outside of the region don't seem to know much about them.

*sighs* It's time to face the problems, world. Plus don't forget where the CCPVirsu, aka WuHan Virus came from.

Did America and the other greedy capitalists help in creating part of these problems? Of course they did. But the authors pointed out in the 'suggestion' part in the book that there are things we can do to lessen the problem and do damage control (e.g. say no to Made in China produces, be aware of spies and hackers, tightened immigration policy, protection for intellectual property, etc). This book was published in 2011, and I'm glad that 10 years later, countries and people are finally taking up these measures to use against CCPChina.

Plus the author works for the Trump Admiration now? I have nothing good to say about Trump but at least I'm glad there are people who know how to handle CCPChina in his crew.

PS: I'm not saying America and the other countries are flawless, but by comparison they aren't as shitty and terrible as the CCP against its own people.

PSS: I also am not saying reading this one book is enough for you to understand CCPChina and its problems, do read more, be critical.

First, while I am glad that I read this book and will be following up with the various citations it made to explore more onto the issue, I find fault often with the language. I realize that it is a “call to action,” but I don’t generally approve of sensationalist or manipulative language. As an example, on page 34 when discussing the corrosive drywall that had a huge negative impact on the homes being rebuilt in wake of the disastrous hurricanes and flooding, the authors state the following, “As a middle-finger salute to this whole shoddy process, the corrosive drywall was then mixed and shipped to the United States without proper oversight or testing.” As a middle-finger salute? I find myself questioning if that was necessary or if it actually detracts from the point being made. It certainly turned me off.

Second, there are a lot of issues being raised in this book. At times it was a little confusing to follow what their point was. There are no footnote/endnote numbers in the actual text itself, so as you are reading you have no idea if the statement is made up or supported by something. There is a section on endnotes in the back of the book, but you have to look them up by page and by phrase, which seems to somewhat hinder the ability to look up and research the original source documents. It’s all there, but, again, as you are reading you don’t have the ability to see if a specific phrase is actually supported by something without constantly flipping back and forth to the back to check every single phrase.

Third, the book did not seem to be equally critical. I’m not saying that everyone should run around criticizing everyone, but I think using critical thinking across the board is an admirable quality when discussing issues. On the Facts And Details website (www.factsanddetails.com) there is the following quote: “China’s three great rivers—the Yangtze, Pearl and Yellow River—are so filthy that it is dangerous to swim or eat fish caught in them. Parts of the Pearl River in Guangzhou are so thick, dark and soupy it looks like one could walk across it.”

On page 176 of Death by China: “America’s three great rivers-the Colorado, Mississippi, and Ohio-are so filthy that it is dangerous to swim or eat fish caught in them. Parts of the Ohio River in Pittsburgh are so thick, dark, and soupy it looks like one could walk across it. –FactsandDetails.com

You don’t have to be a card-carrying member of the Sierra Club to know this quotation is phony. But once you replace “America” with “China,” substitute the “Yangtze, Pearl, and Yellow” rivers of the “Colorado, Mississippi, and Ohio,” and swap “Guangzhou” for “Pittsburgh,” the environmental picture painted by the website FactsandDetails.com is all too real.” – Death by China”
If this is a phony inaccurate quote, why is it quoted as if it is legit? Sure, the authors state that it is phony in the paragraph following where they quoted it, but why was that necessary? Also, there are pollution problems in the United States and I don’t believe this section is using critical thinking and analysis equally.

On page 178, the authors write that millions of citizens live at the mouth of the river in Shanghai, but no one dares to bathe or swim in the waters. Several times throughout this section there are references to American bodies of water, but the authors don’t mention that it is illegal to swim in the Potomac in Washington D.C. 364 days per year? It is my understanding that this is largely because of the level of feces and other contaminants (although my cursory search doesn’t find that as the official reason so please don’t treat that as fact and I may very well be wrong – I’d love to know if I am).

Overall, I find that while I appreciate the book and it’s compilation of topics and sources, I don’t find it a very reliable source of fact. The language can also be confusing in some places and a little more factual explanation could have been provided on some of the topics. It does require a significant amount of time to read in order to digest all the information and check the sources (there is nothing wrong with this). It is an interesting opinion piece and I look forward to looking into the sources it quotes and continuing to research the topic. Despite my criticisms of the nature of the language and content, I hope the authors are appeased that I do intend to look more into the issue. Their point was made and their call to action will be followed on my part by more research. That, I think, is ultimately their end goal and therefore they can count this as a success.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received Death by China by Peter Navarro and Greg Autry free from Prentice Hall/Pearson through the FSB Media review program. I was not required to write a positive review and did not receive any other compensation. The opinions I have expressed are my own and no one else’s. Absurdist and racist piece of Anti-Chinese propaganda of the lowest order. Non-Americans will find this book very irritating, the writer seems to care only about the Americans losing their jobs due to the flood of Chinese imports and doesn't give a shit about people from other countries with the same problem. Why would the rest of world and especially China care about what happens to American people? Did Americans ever care about the consequences of their foreign policies?
The writer ought to sort his shit out and instead of evoking racism and xenophobia go after the people who created this mess in the first place. We all know who they are and where they come from.

Yeah, yeah, eye-catching, obviously hyperbolic title “Death by China,” right? But do you have maybe a scintilla of doubt that our relationship with China isn’t what it’s cracked up to be? Okay, not really a fair question. Any thinking person would probably have that much doubt. How about these?

Might China:

– threaten the American economy and our security by stealing our intellectual assets, outright cyber attacks, currency manipulation, abusive trade practices, and slave labor?

– endanger not just itself but all of us by befouling its water, air, and land to an unbelievable degree with industrial waste, human feces, and carcinogous particulates?

– target us with orbital nuclear weapons, killer satellites, new nuclear submarines with missiles aimed at our heartland, and stealth aircraft?

– checkmate us by owning enough of our debt and assets to plunge us into economic depression by selling or manipulating them and by owning enough of the world’s raw materials to lock us out of the market?

This makes clear in unforgiving detail the answers are all yes, and much worse.

And this was published seven years ago.

Our current relationship with China destroys our industrial base, erodes our ability to uphold freedom of the seas, and obviously makes us poorer. We have no interest in keeping this relationship as it is or maintaining its stability.

I posted a preliminary review of the book and now that I’ve finished it, I still feel it does a great job at exposing how we have been creating our own long-term economic downfall by focusing solely on maximizing our near-term profits. Our shortsighted greed … there’s really nothing else to call it … has blinded us to the fact that we’re just digging our own grave. It’s not farfetched to predict that the US economy will end up failing and we’ll become a client state of China. If that happens, it will be because we did it to ourselves. It seems to already be happening.

I picked up the book because I’ve been watching this trend myself and was curious what the authors had put together. Their point is that it is within our power to change that future. We could stop doing it to ourselves.

Really, the entire thesis is in the last chapter, and everything prior to that is the background necessary to understand each of the suggestions they make. A fairly gross over-simplification of their argument is that if we could simply get China to play fair, everything would work out. But were not succeeding at that, and problem keeps getting worse. The authors make a strong case that China is not our friend, that in fact they are at war with us on several fronts already and have already prepared themselves militarily in case it turns into armed conflict. That scenario is kind of scary. When China control access to the rare minerals necessary to make all of our computers and electronics work, when they have erected their own global positioning and communication satellites and have successfully conducted tests proving they could blow ours out of their orbits, then the military scenario becomes especially scary. It’s tough to fight against an opponent who has the ability to flip an “off” switch on your entire military.

I agree with the reviews criticizing the tone as somewhat inflammatory, but this is a call-to-action book and so it’s appropriate if sometimes annoying. I think it’s an important read more than a good read. There are things each of us can do to help simply by becoming more conscious and moral consumers, but no one feels compelled to change until they realize their buying decisions have impact and matter. By changing our behavior, we can have a powerful impact on many of the levels discussed. The higher level political changes won’t come about until a critical mass of people are aware of the situation, so the conversation this book represents needs to grow. For that reason, I give it 5 stars. If it were just on the basis of how good a read the book was, I’d be more like 3.5 or 4 because the tone is sometimes off-putting. Hope this was helpful.

TL;DR: imagine your drunk uncle wrote a book about China, and then was made senior adviser on trade in the Trump Administration.

I would like to start off this review by saying that this book is absolute trash, and you will lose 5 IQ points simply by skimming it. You will frequently need to put the book down due to prose-induced rage headaches. Peter Navarro has the writing style and mental clarity of a community college sophomore simultaneously transitioning through his socialist, fascist, and libertarian phases. This book is one long string of terrible puns, gargantuan oversimplifications, and downright lies.

For all you China hands, this book received praise from a smattering of retired military officers, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) (my favorite bloviating nutjob and Russian bootlicker on the Foreign Affairs Committee) and Gordon Chang (the Heritage Foundation). Just by the review list, you know you're on the far side of right-wing.

I only picked up this book because Peter Navarro is currently a senior adviser on trade in the the Trump Administration. I thought this book might be a helpful road map to see what's coming next in the U.S.-China relationship.

The sad part is that I don't disagree with the first half of Navarro's thesis: I also believe that China is a hegemonic military power and is destroying the post-WWII multilateral trade system (not single-handed, of course, but they ain't helping). Unfortunately, Navarro uses dodgy half-truths to make this argument, such as blaming the trade deficit on Chinese currency manipulation (which hasn't been a major issue since the mid-oughts). He also attempts to co-opt many left-wing arguments against China - such as labor abuses, environmental pollution, and unregulated production - to bolster his case. To be honest, I don't disagree with those points, but I think it's pretty rich for a right winger to rest his argument against China on the tears of underpaid Chinese laborers while the GOP tries to destroy the minimum wage, or complain about poisonous consumer goods when the GOP is trying to dismantle the American regulatory state.

Additionally, I strongly disagree with his proposed fixes laid out in Chapter 16, which are basically to shut down trade with China, ban Chinese investment in the U.S., and halt Chinese visitors to the U.S. In addition to these barn burners, he has some proposals out of right field, such as "stop China's UN veto abuses now" (he proposes that we do that by condemning Chinese vetoes. Sure buddy, that'll definitely work. I don't know why we didn't try that before.) and "Claim the moon before China does" (no, I am not making this up. It's on page 259).

I guess I should end on a positive note - my favorite part of the book was the description of the various pro-China arguments - he's pretty spot on with that chapter.

I give this book a one star rating for quality and a five star rating for relevance, which averages out to three stars. But don't say I didn't warn you.

After reading the blurb on the back cover, I expected this book to take an overly alarmist stance regarding China. In a few places I think it does, but for the most part the authors' present many alarming and powerful arguments against China. Some of it I remember reading about in the news, but a lot of it was brushed under the rug and forgotten about. It's a shame this doesn't get more attention by our media. I've long been wary of China siphoning away our jobs and their growing military, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Chinese businesses don't pay for their mistakes -- we do. The undervaluing of the yuan by pinning it to the dollar. The exploitation of Africa. Eye-opening indeed.

But the book isn't just about what China is doing to the US or the rest of the world; it also highlights the plight of Chinese citizens, living in polluted cities under the constant threat of imprisonment. Censorship squelches any want for democracy or freedom. Sobering stuff. I hope this book draws attention to the issues, it's been overlooked and allowed to persist for far too long.

The reason I didn't give it 5 stars -- the book's tone toward China is way too biased. Instead of presented just the facts, they're surrounded by language designed to incite the reader or excessive fear-mongering. I question the veracity of a number of anecdotes (or that the Chinese can even be blamed for it). The language colors the facts, and I don't think this is going to sit well with a lot of people, who may dismiss the valid arguments based on that fact alone. I realize the authors' intent is to spur people into action, but it goes too far.

I have not read "The Coming China Wars," but based on reviews of that book, it sounds like many of the same topics are covered here. I'd also hoped for more of a discourse on how to deal with China than one chapter (which was the case in the previous book).

If I had read this book in 2011, I might have regarded it as no more than a fear-mongering work of hyperbole. I’m glad that I read this in 2020 after incontrovertible evidence surfaced of China’s unlawful occupation of Tibet, its inhuman treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang that's been likened to ethnic cleansing, and its continual harassment and deprival of South-Asian countries of their rights of passage, drilling, and fishing even after an international tribunal ruled in 2016 that China has no historical, territorial rights based on the nine-dash-line. I further witnessed China’s wolf warrior from its so called Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department, announced blatantly and in the uttermost undiplomatic manner that the Sino-British Joint Declaration which guarantees for Hong Kong “one country, two systems” till 2047 is a historical document and carries with it no significance whatsoever. China thus self-legitimized its subsequent takeover, or more accurately put, “occupation” of Hong Kong.

What might have appeared as incendiary, xenophobic, outlandish, or absurd accusations from the book are indeed unfolding and being proven right before our very eyes at the time of writing. Truth is stranger than fiction.

While I don't agree with everything in the book, I do think the authors make some valid and crucial points that need to be taken seriously. The authors' claims are backed by real data, and even if the rhetoric seems alarmist or incendiary, the facts alone speak for themselves. The implications of the book will have a profound impact on every global citizen, and especially the American public (its primary audience). It needs to be read by everyone, politicians and housewives alike.

Death by China is a first-hand look at how China is the greatest threat to America and why. It's discussed about how many Americans die daily from poisoned food, spiked drugs, toxic toys and more that all come from China. Many US Industries have partnered with China to get these items imported into the states at a fraction of the cost. Many jobs in the US have been disposed of because they can get the work done cheaper across seas.

But what has that done for our economy? And how are the people in China surviving under these conditions? If they are sending harmful chemicals to us, they must be living in squalor conditions. It's discussed about their polluted water - they have 7% of the earth's water in China and they drink water with waste in it!

They have been trying to gather power, but also cyber power. It wasn't discussed in the media, but back in April, China took over the internet for fifteen minutes. Not just you and I, but military and government offices as well they had access too. Crazy!!

It seems like this book is about bashing China, but unfortunately, most things discussed are true. It's very scary and many topics are discussed. Death by China is easy to read and understand. Navarro and Autry obviously know what they are talking about, as they come across very well-informed. This is a book every American needs to read. I found it, and so did my husband, very enlightening.

Even though the book has copious end notes, it is written in such an inflammatory, exclamatory style that I found it unconvincing. I'd prefer more facts and less outrage. I guess I should have been forewarned by the title, "Call to Action". I do think we have allowed China to move into a preemptive position with regard to our economic welfare, which is why I selected the book to read. And, I do avoid consumption of the Walmart/Hobby Lobby/ prelandfill stock. More reason, less alarm would have been useful.

Although though Pater Navarro brings up some legitimate concerns, the book is written with such sensationalism that it negates all of the concerns. I laughed out loud many times. But congratulations to Mr. Navarro for keeping Yellow Fever alive and well.

The vitriol spewing in this book is impressive. This is not to say what he's saying isn't for the most part true (some of it is spurious and based on rumors, in that we have no hard evidence to back it up, but the rest is all straight from the newspapers and Chinese friends of mine wouldn't contradict it)... but so what? His suggestions on what we should do to counter China's growing dominance are naive at best. That and some of the bad behaviors that are NOT state sanctioned, well you know that point system everyone has been talking about that was set up for good and bad behavior? It's in part because the central government in China really has a lot less sway over its own people than Americans assume it does, but now you won't be able to get your kids into a good school or fly on a plane ... all of which is their way of trying put teeth into their laws that till now the average Chinese has just ignored. Also, at this point a lot of what's in the book is heavily dated.

The authors are not afraid to stack one indictment on top of the other to convince their readers that China poses a threat of monumental proportions to all countries—especially to the USA—in virtually every sphere of international interaction whether it be political, commercial, economic, judicial, military, environmental, communicative, health, educative or religious. Indeed, the threat is intranational, to China itself, as well as international, impacting the rest of the world. In well documented detail they describe a burgeoning juggernaut which is totally obsessed with its own power to dominate with little or no regard to ethics, honesty, diplomacy, trustworthiness or justice.

Is the picture as terrible as the authors picture it? Is this merely sensationalistic hyperbole? Emphatically not! Are we faced with the choice of either succumbing to an expansionistic hegemony, or confronting it head on—even militarily, if necessary—so that we can protect our rights and freedoms? If we take their message to heart it seems that at least we need to stop looking the other way, hoping that things are not as bad as the facts clearly indicate. In the back of the book the authors present numerous steps needed to be taken by the United States and others to constrain and restrain China’s increasingly oppressive world ascendancy. Many of these ideas only serve to highlight how far China’s incursions have come and that believing the proposed remedies could be carried out is nonsensically unrealistic. No doubt the members of the Chinese hierarchy who may gain access to this book are having riotous bellylaughs about the authors’ presumptuous directives which they are sure could never see the light of day. Unfortunately, they may be right.

This book drives home how naïve America and most Western powers have been about China’s emergence from a primitive, backward, disorganized peasant society to a modern, sophisticated, ambitious and (it can justifiably be said) uncompromisingly ruthless power. In three decades the Chinese have proven how quickly and effectively a centralized totalitarian power structure can advance world-controlling ambitions. We ignore them at our own peril. The only long term solution--to which, regrettably, the authors do not give credence--is that the Chinese people over time can succeed in planting more and more seeds of democratization. Or, is that only adding one naivety to another?

I was very impressed with President Trump's ability to stand up for economic fairness around the world, be it with NATO, NAFTA, the Paris accord or China dealings. I've always felt a president's success or failure was directly related to those he picked as advisors.
I chose Peter Navaro's book because he was an advisor to Trump and Trump was making progress with China on fair trade.
The book is easy to read and understand and in my opinion should be required reading in high school. For a decade we allowed China to manipulate trade. Like Navarro mentions, free trade in theory is the ultimate goal but it only works when both sides follow the rules. President Bush was too preoccupied with war to understand the China threat and their massive illegal business practices. Obama understood but was too weak to make a stand. Enter Trump. Most leaders including those at the top of the WTO feared WWIII in the form of tariffs. After all, China controls 80% of the raw material in the world. Trump's mix of compliments for Xi Jinping and overall strength of the US allowed him to move toward a more equitable partnership.
Just as climate change is a valid concern that cannot be dismissed, China's manipulation to gain control of the world should be taken seriously.
Those at the top of the corporate chain that have repeatedly sold out hard working Americans for more money are to blame and the presidents and politicians before Trump are to blame. China just did what they were allowed to do.

Although full of potentially useful information regarding what is currently the world's second largest economy, the book is marred by its alarmist rhetoric and overall reactionary tone. As much as the book's author tries to warn readers about the dangers of what is arguably a controversial and contradictory country (I'm writing this while in China), it comes across as paranoid and ethnocentric in most chapters.

Having said that, it is worth a glance, at least to have a better idea of what potential risks there are in dealing and doing business with China.

This book is just too unbelievable. The author left me with the impression that he couldn't trust the facts to be convincing enough on their own, so he exaggerates them. I'm sure China exports some crap, but Navarro would have you believe every single thing that leaves their borders is either poisonous, flammable, carcinogenic, or radioactive.

I was looking for a book I could discuss with my friends. This wasn't it.

This book is so awful it makes me want to reevaluate other books I've given 1 star too, because there is no way they are this trash.

95% of Navarro's evidence is anecdotal and his attacks are vehemently personal and hyperbolic. Easily the worst book I've read about China, including from the ones that share a similar negative Sino outlook but instead do so with nuance, professionalism and evidence.

Important reading about the Chinese government and policy (not people). Unsafe products, environmental practices and human rights offenses are critical to understand. I didn’t like the sarcasm or hyperbole in the writing, and it gets in the way of the book’s impact, but the research is sound and the concerns should be widely shared.

More like Death by Hyperbole. The author's (potentially) valid points were lost in their overly-dramatic writing style. I don't really need to constantly be reminded of the Chinese manufacturers' "black hearts". Generalizations serve no one.

Its writing is a little breathless, but understandable when considering the avoidable results we're all living with. Not a cheerful read but a public service and call to action.
