Bulldog Briefs 2019 - club news and results summary

Dear members, sponsors and supporters,

We had another great day on Saturday and feels like our season for the Seniors is back on track. It was fantastic to see our brand of footy being played and the game was won comfortably.  No doubt Noble will come out on the weekend with their best footy so we need to make sure we keep bringing what we have the last couple of games.

The Development Squad is now on the board with a very good win against Nth Ringwood.  The boys all played well and look forward to more success going forward.

Our U19's had a well fought out game against top side Heathmont and they played competitively throughout the match.  Even though they didn't get the win this week you can tell that they will come throughout the season.

Our Women's team took it up to their opposition Upper Ferntree Gully with a fantastic win. The girls are 3 from 3 and this week meet top team Upwey Tecoma on Sunday.

Mixed results for our Netballers with a bye, a win and 2 losses.

Read the coaches/team reps comprehensive reports below.

This week the EFL hold the Beyond Blue Round and this is an important reminder to look out for each and for ourselves. If you feel you need help please reach out to someone, there will always be people willing to have a chat and help you find the resources you need.

If you played Footy at South in the 70's and 80's we have out Team of the Decades Lunch coming up on the 1st June so please see the flyer for details.

Make sure you get along and support our teams this weekend as crowd momentum really helps.

Woof woof!

We headed to Quambie Reserve in what was a very important game.

After getting our first win in Round 4 we really needed to back it up. We had a major focus of having 22 contributors play 4 quarters of consistent footy – something we hadn’t achieved so far this year.

To the boys credit – they were fantastic.  We controlled the footy very well having 370 possessions and 104 marks for the day.  Our pressure was excellent creating turnovers and starting a number of attacks from defence.  For 2 weeks in a row, our defenders have been terrific, keeping our opponents to 6 and 5 goals respectively.

As mentioned every one of our 22 contributed, however, Dale walker, Jayden Cass, Pat Rosier, Dano King, Jason Want, Jordan Walker, Max Warren and Daniel Cooper were our best players on the day.

We now look towards Noble Park at home next week to keep building on our better form in another important game for our season.

Finally the drought has broken.

Prior to the game on Saturday we spoke about expectations. I was expecting to win the game, and I think all the players were too.

We weren’t expecting to win because North Ringwood have been struggling. We were expecting to win because of all the hard work and systems we had put into place over the past month of games.

The first quarter of the game started with all the effort and intensity we have been displaying over the last 4 weeks. The difference this week to previous weeks was that we were able to hit the scoreboard early. This gave everybody the confidence to be aggressive and attacking. We played very attractive and skillful football whilst sticking to our game plan. We managed 3.5 to 1.1 in the first quarter and were really dominating the game.

The second quarter we really got on top of the opposition and continued playing skillful and attacking football whilst being very good defensively and went to half time with a 42-point lead. The buzz and talk in the rooms at the main break was great to listen to as all players were really switched on and keen to continue improving and having a big second half.

We went into the third quarter full of energy and continued to control the game. We were probably all trying to get too far forward in this quarter and didn’t hold our structure as well as we could have. We kicked 3.6 to 4 points for the quarter but probably could have kicked 6 plus goals with a little more composure.

The fourth quarter was reduced to a flat 17 minutes and we played the game out continuing to dominate and finished winning by 75 points whilst managing to hold the opposition to 1 goal. Well done to all involved on breaking the drought!

Moving forward we will continue to develop our already good work rate, physicality and effort.
We will continue to become an even better defensive side. We will work on holding our forward structure better and kicking straighter at goal. We still need to improve our skills & decision making whether under pressure or no pressure.

Next week I expect us to again take another step forward. The expectation is for improvement every week and the rewards will come.

U19s - Rd 5

South Croydon U19s ventured down to H E Parker reserve to play Heathmont.

Heathmont appears one of the measuring sticks at this level and sit second on the ladder.

Similar to last week, the overcast and sometime wet conditions afforded us to bring our contested brand of footy to the game. We started the game winning the ruck contests but allowing the opposition to spike our taps to gain their ascendancy from the centre clearances. Kyle Phelan and Ben Willis came to play in our team and lead us with run, leap and excellent ball use. Ben lowering his eyes to spot Westy on a lead to put our only first quarter goal on the board. Coops and Brattles battle hard, but Heathmont managed 4 goals in the first quarter, but our boys were more than competitive. (QT Sth 9 to Heathmont 27).

We steadied and matched our opposition in all departments in the second quarter. We were able to apply more heat in the contests, with all players contributing to a high tackle count and pressure around the contests. Both Ben and Kyle kicked a goal each, matching Heathmont's tally. Our defence lifted and played a close checking quarter, with both Angus’ and Riley creating run out of our back line. (half time score was Sth 21 to H’mont 35).

Nic Mac booted a handy goal, with Ben Willis bagging another 2 goals in this quarter. This, again, was matched by H’mont. Plaudits must go to our back line, which showed enormous poise and rebounded the opponents attacks. Sam Mac, was given a “run with” job on one of H’monts key runners and had an enormous affect in curbing his influence. A real sacrifice to his own game, but a solid and disciplined team job!

Nic Mac, Brattles, Coops and Jay D, kept the forward thrusts coming with in and under support for the bulldozer, Aka. Maurice played his best quarter of footy and Patty Fry kept chipping in with positive ball handling and decision making. (3/4 time Sth 41 to H’mont 56).

With only 3 kicks in the game and South pushing hard, the fourth quarter became an arm wrestle, with Ben Willis kicking his fourth for the game. With our tails up, Heathmont were able to answer with two in a row from good rebound footy. It was the strength of our backline, with Andy Reyment playing an excellent second half of footy, with Riley and the two Gus’ digging deep and trying to cut of the run of our opponents. Kyle Phelan, topped off an excellent game with his second goal, but South just couldn’t catch Heathmont in the end. (Final Score South 8 6 54 to 11 12 78).

Congratulations to our boys. It was a 4 quarter effort, full of endeavour. A few of our guys playing their best game for the club. I am sure the votes will be spread wide, as there were so many bright lights. In writing this report, I know I will have missed talking about some deserving contributors. Having said that, I am full of praise for the team effort and believe you all contributed.

A shout out to Charlie, who suffered a concussion. Our thoughts are with you, pal and hope you have a speedy recovery.

Senior Women - Rd 3

Another great week from the team.

Although it was cold and wet and we didn't have change rooms until 30mins before the game, it didn't deter the girls from pulling out another big win.

Holly Oldfield was our top goal scorer this week. Her solid marks and ability to break packs and centre herself for shots allowed her to score 6 majors. Ruby also played one of her best games in the ruck and up forward. It's great to see her skills developing.

Once again, our defensive lineup was strong and rarely let the ball in. These girls work well together and have learnt to switch their match ups, communicate and block out their players. Keep it up girls.

Looking ahead, we need big numbers at training this week (and every week) so we can work through our structures and ensure everyone is on the same page. There are times in our game where some players look lost, so it's important we all switch on from the first siren.

Our big match up is next week against Upwey Tecoma who were a strong side last year and are the number one side this year. I believe we can get the win over them if we play smart footy and train the way we want to play.

Go doggies!

Veterans - Rd 3

The Vets played away in Round 3 against North Croydon / Mount Lilydale Old Collegians and being Mother’s Day it was a rushed preparation for a few juggling activities for the day.

Despite this the team came ready to play and after a few good weeks on the track we got off to a great start. We had a couple of new players having their first game for the club and they fitted in nicely with some adjustment with our forward line setups also that made an impact on the way we played.

The group combined really well this week playing a great brand of football against an undermanned opposition who really tried hard winning many stoppage clearances until we fixed our midfield structures around this and began to play the way we wanted. The backline repelled well all day with not much getting through our centre half backline and the half forwards were at the drop of the ball all day if our deep forwards weren’t grabbing their marks.

Big thanks to all the partners allowing the guys to play on their day I think we all enjoyed the outing and thanks again to all the supporters and volunteers who came down and helped out on the day. It was great to get a good result and it doesn’t happen without a lot of work from beyond the playing group.

We are having our ladies day next round on the 25th May when we are back home against Eltham so please get along to support.

A close game this week against Ringwood resulting in our first loss for the season.

Ringwood came out firing each quarter but we managed to hold our own & keep it with in 1 or 2 points each break.

Unfortunately they managed to get away with it in the last quarter & we lost by 5 points in the end.

Despite the loss there was some fantastic play by all the girls & an incredible defensive effort from Melissa Perkins!

It was a tough game this week with Scoresby coming out hungry.

Unfortunately for us, we couldn't keep up in the first quarter, leaving us with a lot of work for the rest of the game.

From the second quarter onwards we played a much more competitive game however this week it was too little, too late.

We still walked away with our heads held high as we played a good game for three quarters - bring on next week!!

After last weeks big loss, we were determined to redeem ourselves. We proved this by having a three goal win over Wantirna South Green.

Moving the ball from end to end was much smoother than last week with only a handful of turnovers.

It was almost goal for goal coming into the last quarter but we managed scrape through in the last few minutes.

Awesome stuff ladies!
