Other Site Characteristics

The territory is large woodland in the basin of the river Rita. Over 90% of the reserve territory is covered with forests. Coniferous forests including bog pine forests prevail. Waterlogged alder forests, islets of spruce forests, broad-leaved forests are also widespread in the territory. The Rita River as well as a number of small forest brooks and the Gusatskiy canal flow across the territory of the woodland. To the north of the eastern part of the site, near the village of Gusak there is the fish farm “Ruda”. There are the sites of open lowland bogs among the woodland.

4.2 Quality and importance

There have been identified 204 species of vertebrate animals in the territory of the reserve, 32 of them are protected. Birds is the most numerous class – there are 148 species. Avifauna is the richest and most diverse among the vertebrate animals of the reserve. About 120 species of birds as well as 12 protected species nest or possibly nest in the territory of the reserve. There are such species of birds as Haliaeetus albicilla, Dendrocopos medius, Dendrocopos leucotos, Dendrocopos medius and other. The number of such species as Grus grus, Ciconia nigra, Bubo bubo is 1% or more of the national population.
