Khashoggi scandal offers chance to prevent catastrophe in Yemen

While the Saudi involvement in the journalist’s death has rightly caused outrage, the regime has been waging graver atrocities against its southern neighbour

The immediate solution to the diplomatic crisis over the death of Jamal Khashoggi is likely to come from international pressure from Saudi Arabia’s allies, or at least those that are left.

But the horrific murder in Istanbul should not detract those allies from a longer standing issue. The West in particular now has an opportunity, and an obligation, to challenge the aggressive tactics being used in Yemen.

In August a panel of experts at the UN human rights council in Geneva found that the Saudi-led coalition airstrikes had hit residential areas and medical facilities, and that some attacks may amount to war crimes.

Unsurprisingly the Saudi government rejected the report and has carried on its activities. While neither side in the conflict is wholly blameless,
