BHOPAL: A 34-year-old man set fire to his brother, sister-in-law and their two children while they were sleeping, and then hanged himself in Anuppur district of Madhya late on Wednesday night.
The couple and one of their children died on the spot. Their other child, a 16-year-old boy, is battling for life at a local hospital. The alleged killer, Deepak Vishwakarma, scribbled his last words on the wall of his room, alleging that his brothers Omkar and Chetram had beaten him and driven him out of the house.
Police say Omkar and Chetram had helped Deepak avail a bank loan of Rs 10 lakh to start a garage business.
When he defaulted on EMIs, his brothers started getting calls from the bank, so they started pressuring him to clear the dues, say police. This allegedly led to an altercation between Deepak and his brothers who live in three houses on the same premises.
On Wednesday night, he had heated arguments with his brothers. Around 1.30am, when they were asleep, Deepak doused Omkar, his wife Kasturia and daughter with petrol andsetthem on fire, said police. Their son was sleeping in another room. Deepak went there and tried to burn down the entire room, but was short of fuel, they added.
Omkar’s son woke up in all in flames and started screaming in agony. Chetram, who was in his house, came running and carried him out of the burning room.
However, the boy’s parents and sister were charred to death. An LPG cylinder exploded in the fire and a bike parked outside also burst into flames, fueling the blaze. Amid the mayhem, Deepak went to his room, wrote a message on the wall and hanged himself, say police.
