PORTLAND (WGME) – Seventeen properties along Forest Avenue in Portland could become historic landmarks.

They're located in-between I-295 and Woodford's Corner, and were once known as "Portland Auto Row."

The buildings would become historic landmarks under the city's historic preservation ordinance.

The ordinance is designed to highlight historically and architecturally significant buildings and areas of the city.

It does provide for some flexibility.

“So, there's a lot of evidence that suggests, sort of strategic historic preservation is good for the economy of the area, it adds value over time,” Portland Director of Planning and Urban Development Jeff Levine said. “It does provide the property owners with access to tax credits. It also allows the sites to grow and change over time."

The Historic Preservation Board wants feedback on which properties to designate before it makes recommendations to the city council.

Board members will hold a public hearing on July 24 at city hall. It starts at 5 p.m.
