This is a review of a free product received from TP-LINK as part of the review program. The AC1200 is a powerful range extender that can help boost your 2.4GHz or 5Ghz network. It's fairly easy to set up via web browser. It also offers the ability to configure it with the KASA mobile app though I had some slight difficulties setting it up that way. I'd recommend using the web browser set up as it is a lot easier. The extender is a bit large and bulky. This is probably how it manages to be so powerful and offer the coverage it does. It's a tradeoff I'll tae as extenders I've used in the past have been smaller but didn't offer good range and were easily bogged down with network traffic. I've had no slowdowns or stability issues with this extender and would highly recommend it.

The product I used for testing was provided by TP-Link free of charge as a part of their Review Program in exchange for an honest review. I am not being paid in any way to deliver a positive review. The first thing you see is the packaging. TP-Link really nailed the presentation on this. It feels like opening up an Apple product, with all separately packaged accessories, matching colors and a nicely displayed view of the AC-1200 Range Extender. If the unboxing experience means anything to you, it will make you deeply happy inside as you set it up. Inside the box is the unit itself, a 3 foot Cat 5e patch cord (I wish this was a Cat 6 cable, as they have better gigabit performance), and the package of paper that contains the Quick Start Guide. For whatever reason, the 1st setup option (With the Kasa app) didn’t work for me on my Moto G3, but the 2nd option (Through the web interface @ tplinkrepeater.net while connected to the repeater’s Wi-Fi network) worked very well for me. Personally, as a networking dude, that wasn’t an inconvenience, and it was so easy, my mom could do it. Setup with the web interface was a breeze. The setup was fluid: set up the 2.4GHz band and then the 5GHz band and then you are done. At the top of the web interface, there are options to restart the unit and log out of the admin account. Peeking into the “Settings” tab on the web interface reveals more features, usually only featured on prosumer routers. If you want to try out these settings on your own, you can always use the TP-Link UI emulator for your product before you buy by going to their site: http://www.tp-link.com/en/emulators.html 1: The “Status” tab includes detailed info on the status of the connection to the router and that of the repeated network, status on the IP address and connection mode (DHCP or Static IP) of the LAN port on the side of the unit for use with Ethernet only devices and a client list of devices connected to the repeater. 2: The “Wireless” tab contains the fields to change the network it is connected to and the SSID of the repeater as well as a nifty feature that allows the ability to allow only certain devices on the network (white list) or to block certain devices from using the network (blacklist). 3: The “Network” tab controls whether or not the repeater will use a static or automatically obtained IP address (DHCP), whether or not the repeater has its own DHCP server, and which band (2.4 or 5 GHz) the traffic from the LAN port on the unit will flow through. 5 GHz is better for Speed, but 2.4 GHz is better for reliability and range. 4: The “System Tools” tab gives access to the Time Zone settings, Night Mode configuration (Turns off the LEDs on the unit during hours you specify), Firmware Upgrade, Backup and Restore (settings and configurations), the admin account password and the System Log. IMPORTANT NOTE: I do wish that TP-Link had included a feature allowing the repeated network to be broadcasted on a different channel than the host network, as failing to do this can result in degraded performance and crosstalk between the two networks. Pros: -The software is easy to learn and feature rich -The inclusion of the Ethernet jack on the side is very useful -The System Log is very verbose and has filters for sifting through it -The settings give access to features usually only found on prosumer routers and very infrequently on repeaters -There is a clear way for both a simple “Plug-and-Play” type user and a power user to make the most out of this unit, with a very shallow but powerful learning curve for simple users to get more involved -A night mode is a nice touch for those who live in small apartments Cons -The repeated network must be broadcasting on the same channel as the host network -The inclusion of only a Cat 5e cable instead of a Cat 6 is minor, but not negligible -The Kasa app, while being easy to use, has no support for giving detailed errors when things go wrong in setup Testing: Pings: All tests were performed by pinging to my 1Gbps capable Desktop computer from my laptop capable of wireless AC 2x2 MU-MIMO. 60 pings were sent all tests. -While connected to the host router (2.4G, N): Min: 2ms, Max: 102ms, Average: 18ms -While connected to the host router (5G, N): Min: 6ms, Max: 32ms, Average: 16ms -While connected to the range extender, directly connected to the host router (2.4G, N): Min: 5ms, Max: 78ms, Average: 17ms -While connected to the range extender, directly connected to the host router (5G, AC): Min: 4ms, Max: 42ms, Average: 14ms IPerf: All tests were performed by pinging to my 1Gbps capable Desktop computer from my laptop capable of wireless AC 2x2 MU-MIMO. IPerf measured every second for 30 seconds for all tests. -While connected to the host router (2.4G, N): 50.3 Mbps/sec -While connected to the host router (5, N): 76.5 Mbps/sec -While connected to the range extender, directly connected to the host router (2.4G, N): 24.6 Mbps/sec -While connected to the range extender, directly connected to the host router (5G, AC): 44.3 Mbps/sec Conclusion: If all you want is to expand your network and eliminate dead spots, this product is a stellar example of how to do it properly. A wired solution with 2 APs (Access Points) connected to the same router by an Ethernet cable is always preferred, but with houses where that isn’t always an option, this is sometimes the only solution.

*This is a review of a free sample obtained through the TP-LINK Reviewer Program* I have a large house, and I'm always looking for ways to extend my home network signal so that I can stream seamlessly wherever I am, even outside. While this TP-Link RE350K is not my favorite TP-Link extender, it has some advantages over other extenders that might make it more desirable for other people and their network needs. Plus, the Kasa app alone, used on a smart phone to configure the range extender, creates a useful and easy interface that is excellent for the non-technologically inclined, provided that they are tech-aware enough to have a smart phone. The basics of this device is pretty much what everyone would need: it extends two bands, one 2.4 Ghz and one 5 Ghz, and creates a good range beyond what your router can do. Once established, the connection is pretty stable, although I've experienced a couple of brief drops that may be more of a function of my internet provider since this is something I've seen on other devices. It has LED lights on the side to indicate its connections. It also has one gigabit ethernet port to connect a device that needs to be hardwired to the network, essentially tricking the device into believing that it is connected directly to the router. You configure via the Kasa app, and then you can move it anywhere within range of the router by plugging it into a wall outlet. It takes 2-3 minutes to boot up. One of the RE350K's advantages is a low profile for an extender. I have mine plugged into the lower portion of the outlet, and it doesn't block access to the upper one. Some extenders hog the whole outlet because of their size -- it only takes an extra 1/2" to make an outlet unusable. This extender has another advantage: it doesn't have visible antennae, so it's a compact box that measures roughly 4.5" h x 2.75" wide x 1.75" deep. I was already familiar with the Kasa app because I have some TP-Link smart plugs, so I might have taken to it more quickly than others might. Even so, it's really simple. You just add the router by pressing the + sign and following the directions. It takes about 5 minutes to set up the extender on your home network. You can later see a list of devices that are using the extender, determine if it is appropriately placed, and change its name. The one thing that I don't like about this extender is the inability to extend my network with the same name -- that is, to be a repeater -- so that my devices at the outer reaches of my home will automatically connect. I have to manually select the extended network. That would be okay for a stationary device such as a TV or game console, but it causes problems when, say, I want to play music from my computer to a set of remote WiFi speakers or when I want my outside WiFi cameras to have a boosted signal even though the base station is connected to the router. I've tried to delete the device and rename the bands during the configuration process; however, that doesn't seem to be an option. Most people will be buying an extender to bring a strong signal to, say, a smart TV or to have WiFi access in a guest room, and the RE350K is excellent for that. Those who are wired like me and who want to have devices at opposite sides of the house on the same network should look elsewhere.

This product works extremely well and has no issues connecting to existing networks. It has some decent range is designed to very compact , Easy to use, Has intelligent signal indicator, and a Gigabit port. The Kasa app allows you to enable connection between other Kasa TP-Link devices. Your going to need some knowledge of smart phones and computers to set up the network settings, and Kasa configurations. This unit only takes up one outlet but you gain alot of coverage through your house for extra signal quality. With the phone app you will get location assistance, easy network monitoring, and simple management of the RE350K. You will get a 2 year warranty with this unit which is really better than the standard 1 year most units give you. This can definitely increase your gaming needs, and can provide up to 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz channel, and 867Mbps on the 5GHz channel. Finding a spot is really easy as well as the Kasa app will look for the most ideal location for this extender in reference to your router. I highly recommend the RE350K for anyone looking to extend their coverage of their existing WiFi network while maintaining excellent speeds. This is a great WiFi range extender, I was using a WNDR3700 in access point mode to extend my main network to the downstairs area of my house, I put this completely downstairs setup it up with just my iPhone 6S and instantly better WiFi coverage is the downstairs part of my house. This was able to pull in the signal a good bit a way from my main router and it easily rebroadcasts it downstairs under a different SSID without an issue! The range is pretty awesome as well, I am able to maintain at least my full internet speed that my ISP provides. Even though this is on a wall deep inside the house, being outside on the porch and even in my backyard it covers it perfectly.
