The passing of legislation affecting commercial deals in the UK has tumbled by more than 20 per cent over the last year because parliament has been tied up with Brexit, according to analysts.

Parliament passed 685 laws that affected businesses in the year to the end of last September, 21 per cent down from the previous year. It was the fourth successive substantial fall in the number of business-related laws passed.

The researchers, from Thomson Reuters, said that commercial legislation has more than halved since the year before the UK voted to leave the EU. They said that wrangling over the departure was crowding out other legislative and parliamentary initiatives.
