School Streets in Lambeth, protect children near their schools
School Streets in Lambeth, protect children near their schools
Why this petition matters
To protect children from toxic fumes, encourage active travel and increase road safety, we urge Lambeth Council to work closely with the most polluted schools in the borough and trial (and if successful, implement) School Streets. This means closing roads around schools at pick-up and drop-off times for all traffic apart from exempt vehicles, residents or local businesses - starting at the latest by September 2019.
Lambeth is one of the most polluted boroughs in London. Data from the Greater London Authority shows that NO2 levels at more than 40 schools are above legal and safe limits. Children are particularly vulnerable to pollution that contributes to asthma, cancer, diabetes, dementia and many other preventable diseases.
Hackney, Walthamstow, Camden and Croydon have all implemented varying kinds of School Streets schemes, which have been successful in reducing pollution and improving road safety.
