Speaking Is Sexy Vol. X, Tip #6
HOW TO FIND IDEAS FOR YOUR NEXT SPEECH
It's amazing how many times people ask me, "Where do
you get the ideas for your Speaking Tips?"
It rather strikes me as the same as my asking an accountant, "How do you know what to tell your client about his income tax?" Or a doctor, "How do you know what to tell your patient about his illness?" Whatever your profession, you've spent time and effort, not to mention money, to become knowledgeable and experienced. You've acquired a bank of information that you
can draw on as needed to help your clients.
Armed with that basic learning, you've become an expert in these areas, and you have enough knowledge at your fingertips to help them solve their difficulties. They might, in the process, present you with specific problems that you may not have previously encountered, which are unique to that particular client or universal to many. Every time you work with someone who comes up with a situation you may not have previously faced, you gain more knowledge, more
experience, and more information to add to your arsenal of professional competence.
So when you're asked to speak about your profession, at a formal gathering or an informal meeting, you'll have at your fingertips the ideas and information you need to talk knowledgeably for 30 minutes or so on a subject that will be of interest to the audience that invited you.
It's the same for me as a speaker's coach and speechwriter. Whenever I sit down to write a Speaking Tip, I go through my memory bank and pull out the most interesting problems and dilemmas clients have asked me to help them solve. I take the gist of the solutions we came up with and create from them a universal Speaking Tip.
For example, if I've been working with a client who has difficulty talking loud enough to be heard, I'll create a Speaking Tip called "Speak to Be Heard" or "Are You Comfortable Hearing You?" or, going in a slightly different direction, "Saying Too Much vs. Saying Too Little." The ideas for these Speaking Tips come from real life situations faced by people who came to me
for help.
Whenever you're called upon to speak about your business or profession, think about the professional situations in which you deal with real people with real difficulties. There's a wealth of ideas there that you can choose from. First, determine what your goal for the speech is, then choose from your real-life experience. It's almost like picking one from Column A
and one from Column B on a Chinese menu.
Try this technique. Keep a "Subjects to Speak About" notebook. Every time you come upon a situation you haven't dealt with before, from which you learned something new that has universal applicability, make a note of it. Next time you need to give a talk, you'll have a number of subjects waiting for you in your notebook. You'll never have to worry
about finding something to talk about again.

“I met with Marion Claire for training in speaking in front of an audience during a book tour. Marion is intelligent and affable. She helped me re-write my “pitch,” and worked with me on its delivery. My presentation was all the better because of her attention to detail and the genial manner in which she delivered her critiques. I hate to think of the talk I would have given without her
help.”

About Marion Claire
I wasn’t born with the ‘speaker’s gene’!
We all have a secret that we don’t want to reveal because we’re afraid people will think less of us. For many, many years I hid mine. I was sure that people would look at me strangely or not want to be around me if they knew I was less than perfect. Boy, was I wrong!
The thing about hiding the truth about yourself is that you are depriving yourself and the folks you come in contact with of the opportunity to have an honest relationship with you. True, you don’t want to just blurt out your deepest feelings or most painful memories at inappropriate moments. But it is far better to be open about the things you cannot change that have shaped who you are. Facing the secrets of the past helps you understand yourself and it helps
others understand you. And with understanding come the gifts of appreciation, sympathy, empathy, and love.
So here’s the embarrassing secret I used to be afraid to reveal.
I was not born with the ‘speaker’s gene’, the courage and confidence to be a terrific public speaker. I had to work at it just like everybody else. Worse, I had a major handicap.
For over 20 years, I suffered from agoraphobia, the fear of crossing open spaces. Actually, in our modern times, it means the fear of being anywhere that we don’t feel safe. For me, sometimes I couldn’t leave my house for more than five minutes, without scurrying back inside. My enemy was not the great outdoors. It was simply fear.
Everyone experiences fear on occasion. And everyone’s fear is a little bit different, personal to the individual. Mine was fear of being alone out in the world. I didn’t feel safe by myself. Although I was perfectly content to live on my own, I needed the comfort and companionship of someone I knew well whenever I ventured out of the safety of my home. No way could I dream of getting up to speak in front of a room full of strangers!
I’m so proud to say that I overcame my fear. It took, first of all, the courage to admit there was something wrong. Then came the desire to fix it and to seek out the help I needed to overcome it.
And wow! Look at me now! Okay, I worked at it, I didn’t snap my fingers and, voila!, I was cured. But today I can speak in front of groups of all sizes, shapes and interests without fearing that no one will listen to what I have to say. If I can do it, so can you! Let me help you.
