Today, Moog is releasing the once-elusive Moog Subharmonicon in a full production model.
The dual-sequencer, dual-VCO, and quad-sub-oscillator Subharmonicon offers rich polyphonic and polyrhythmic possibilities. Onboard you'll find classic Moog features like the ladder filter, as well as a 32 I/O patchbay that includes a MIDI input.
First built as a special-edition project at the 2018 Moogfest, the Subharmonicon is an inspired tribute to two historic electronic instruments: the Rhythmicon and the Trautonium.
But while those antique machines of the early 20th century would be unwieldy to play (if you could even get your hands on one), the Subharmonicon is built in the same straightforward form factor as Moog's recent semi-modulars like the Mother-32 and DFAM.
At well under a grand, it's about half the used price of those rare, one-off Moogfest Subarmonicon builds, which have been sold on the used market for $2,000 or more.
What makes the Subharmonicon's sequencing unique are the machine's four Polyrhythm Generators, which can be set anywhere from 20 to 3,000 BPMs, with a master tempo able to be divided into 1 through 16 parts. You can assign each of these generators to one or both sequencers. When combined with the different oscillators, sub-oscillators, and patches, you can create all kinds of ornate patterns.
