Other Site Characteristics

The geomorphology of the site is represented by a lake-alluvial plain of the late-lake early Holocene age, which merges with the high water bed of the river Yaselda and after-glacier limnetic-paluduous lobe of lake Sporovskoye. The area of the site is traversed by such large tectonic structures as Polessie cavity in the east and the Brest cavity in the west. Thus apart from geo-morphological signs there are also neo-tectonic reasons for the formation of the humid conditions on the area, which defines the structural face and functionality of the site landscapes.

4.2 Quality and importance

Sporovo fen mire is a key habitat for the globally threatened Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola, supporting 9% of the global population. The site is characterized by the highest breeding density of this species. It supports 20 more bird species listed in the National Red Data Book, including two disappearing ones, Corncrake Crex crex and Great Snipe Gallinago media, as well as an internationally important population of Bittern Botaurus stellaris and nationally important breeding populations of Black Stork Ciconia nigra. The site hosts a total of 123 bird species.
