A romantic war hero is asking for help to find his long-lost sweetheart who he has spent 60 years searching for.

William Brown, known as Bill, said he is "determined" to find the woman he met in 1958, who was then called Joyce Fowler.

The 78-year-old from Cambridge said he will "never give up" searching for the "very pretty, kind and caring" Joyce, who lived in Plymouth.

The pair met when they were serving at the British Military Hospital in Singapore - Joyce was in the British Army as a nurse and Bill was in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

Bill never got to say goodbye to his sweetheart as he was suddenly taken ill and hospitalised. He was then flown back to the UK and was never able to let Joyce know.

Joyce would now also be 78 and Bill is hopeful she will reach out.

He said: "Dear ex army nurse Joyce Fowler. I have been trying to reach you for 60 years now, and am determined to get back in contact with you.

"The last time we were together we spent a lovely day together, walking miles to Haw Par Villa, which was the Chinese Torture Chambers.

"Unfortunately shortly after, I was hospitalised, and returned home to the UK by MEDIVAC, and was not able to let you know.

"I have tried many times over the years to find you, and get back in contact with you, using numerous search engines but have been unsuccessful, so I decided to write to you, via Plymouth Live.

"I live alone after traveling over a large part of the world, I have decided that Italy is my ideal country, but i cannot be away from my lovely grandchildren here in england.

"Cambridge is a beautiful city. Plus my son and three grandchildren live in Castle Cary, which is not far from you."

Bill described Joyce as a "very pretty dark haired girl".

He said: "She was such a kind caring person, she was lovely, really lovely. I was smitten."

Bill married at the age of 30, but has been divorced for 35 years and would love to go back to the far east.

He said: "I have travelled a great deal of the world and would like to go back the far east and Malaya, where I was on active service during The Malayan Conflict.

"It would be a great place for my second marriage - if my dreams come true."

Bill says he has been "blessed with good health and happiness" and has three children and eight "amazing" grandchildren.
