For gifted and talented students grades 5-7
This Duke TIP interdisciplinary curriculum for gifted 5th, 6th, and 7th graders provides differentiated lessons so students can write stories driven by interest. They will craft original characters and plots, test different points of view, and experiment with a range of settings and style. Along the way they follow the stories of several characters via an original TIP adventure film set in ancient Rome and Egypt, Renaissance England, and twentieth-century China and Argentina. Students will be prompted to invent plot twists that add Julius Caesar, Nefertiti, Evita, and Queen Elizabeth I as they try to escape dramas and traumas. The curriculum also provides arts, history, and vocabulary excursions so students can develop believable worlds with high stakes and intriguing characters. Teachers will have excellent tips for teaching challenging creative writing concepts and skills to gifted students.
