Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser to Star in 'Mad About You' Limited Series Reboot

"We promise you the same funny and heartwarming show," Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser said in a joint statement

Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser will be starring alongside one another on the small screen again — and we aren’t mad about it!

On Wednesday, Spectrum Originals announced that it has picked up a Mad About You limited series.

The Sony Pictures Television-produced reboot will include the original cast, and Hunt, 55, and Reiser, 62, will return as married couple Jamie Stemple Buchman and Paul Buchman, respectively.

“We are so excited to finally be doing this and thrilled to have Peter Tolan as our fearless captain,” Reiser and Hunt said in a joint statement. “We promise you the same funny and heartwarming show — as soon as we can remember what’s funny about being older. It’s going to be great!”

Hunt will direct the first episode, and Peter Tolan has been tapped as showrunner and will serve as executive producer and writer for the series. Both Hunt and Reiser will executive produce alongside Brian Volk-Weiss, Michael Pelmont, and Matthew Ochacher for Comedy Dynamics.

“We couldn’t be more excited to work with Helen and Paul and to partner with Spectrum Originals and Katherine, to bring this acclaimed comedy back to life,” said Jeff Frost, President of SPT, Chris Parnell and Jason Clodfelter, Co-Presidents of SPT. “It has been a labor of love for all involved and we think audiences will relish the next chapter in these wonderful characters’ lives.”

The original romantic comedy series — co-created by Reiser and Danny Jacobson (who will serve as an executive consultant) — aired for seven seasons, from 1992-99, and picked up numerous Emmy and Golden Globe Awards.

Last April, Hunt told PEOPLE she was hopeful about a reboot of the original series.

“The dream is to get to do it,” she said.

“I have remained very, very close friends with Paul. Reboot, or no reboot we have lunch once a month,” she shared. “We really enjoy and care for each other. Plus, my daughter loves Stranger Things so now when he calls she’s excited. She’s never seen an episode of Mad About You but she’s super psyched about Stranger Things!”

She continued, “It was a very loving piece of work. We loved it. It would be fun to work on something that’s really about love. We’ll be older though — I hope people are prepared for that. I’m not prepared for it!”

The series is scheduled to launch in late 2019.
