2017 Undercarriage Surface Rust

Hello, I don't post a lot but wanted to share some undercarriage surface rust that I'm starting to get on my 2017 Taco. I'm from New England and have about 34,000 miles on the truck so it has seen a few winters and more road salt than it probably should. I bring it to a car wash often in the winter for a wash with undercarriage spraying (no idea how well that works). Anyway, I was wondering if any of you paint over your surface rust, or lightly sand it down and cover it with any product. I've heard of spraying used motor oil on the underside of the truck, but I've not tried it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

 

Paint it with chainsaw bar oil. Repeat once/mo for 3 months.

It lasts for a couple years a bit South of you. Check it once in a while, cuz rust spreads quickly.

Edit: scrape the flakes away. They trap water. Trapped water, like you get with any non-factory spray on "sealant", will rust your truck away in no time.

This stopped my '05 Tundra from crumbling away. I was amazed by how well it worked.

 

Thanks very much for the advice. I can hear the Toyota dealer laughing when I ask them if the rust I am seeing activates the corrosion performance clause in my warranty. I'm within 60 months but I doubt this will qualify.

 

That's nothing to worry about. Just start using a product called fluid film before every winter.

 

Does Fluid Film work as well as bar oil? Cuz bar oil is around $8 / gallon and lasts a couple years.

I learned about it from a neighbor who restores old ww2 vehicles. Jeeps and trucks mostly. He'll paint replacement pieces, but won't paint anything he can't thoroughly bead blast and wipe with acetone first. He's got a Huey too, the hoardy bastard.

 

Probably works better because fluid film is designed as an undercarriage protection. Sure you could probably let it go longer but once a year isn’t unreasonable at all.

 

I'll try it if rust appears.

 

It's more as a rust preventative. Even if your frame and everything looks great, I recommend it to keep it that way. This is plenty to do the truck.

I'm in the south so I don't deal with this but I would be inclined to hit the spots with some rust inhibitor spray

 

When I still had my 2011 I would take a wire brush to the rusty spots on the underside about every other year, then pime and paint. Seemed to work well and I could do it with stuff I already had in my garage.

Spray it with atf cheep easy and lasts a long time.

 

I have a 2015 and all the frame welds are starting to show rust. I bought it last year and it’s pissing me off a bit. But I live in Maine so f me right? Just used fluid film yesterday and it’s crazy the difference I can already see.

 

Mine looked similar until a couple weeks ago. Hit all the spots with a wire brush, washed everything real good and let it dry.

Then hit the spots with rust converter, and top coat of flat paint to blend everything in.

Final step is your rust inhibitor of choice. I chose Mavcoat for everything I can reach easy/ may be working on down the road. Fluid film will be applied soon to boxed parts of frame/ spots where I couldn't get a good shot of the other stuff on.

 

My 2019 looked similar when I drove it off the lot with 5 miles.

Maybe it's just surface rust?

Thanks! It's not hard work, just a bit of time. The extra ~5" in height from makeshift ramps makes all the difference crawling around under there.

 

That will be rusted through in 5 years.

 

A 1/4" thick hitch receiver? Me thinks not. Only thing that op pictured that I would fix immediately is the bottom pic. The shackle too, but thats easily replaceable if need be.


+1 for fluid film. In my opinion, it trumps all other products that you can apply to your undercarriage for one reason. It seeps. Spray a little on your frame, 2 weeks later the wet spot will be much bigger. It will soon be time to spray my 04 next month. Sucks to do, but worth it to know my truck is protected.

 

Never done anything to my 99 had it 17 yrs never left Maryland my 96 same for 23 yrs old girl looks good under her skirt lol never been out of md I hear theses theses horror stories I guess I am lucky ? My buddy has a 96 got it in Delaware has had it for 20 + yrs bed is rusted through frame is holey just terrible so go figure even Wells and body rusting out wants me to take it and restore it but I don't know it's gonna be a job lol
