One man has died in early morning house fire in Guilford.
Vermont State Police said the fire happened on Autumn Hill Road. The blaze broke out about 4:15 a.m. Tuesday.
The man was identified as 52-year-old Timothy White. Neighbors were shocked to hear of his death.
"Its a real tragedy. It's horrible," said Bud Skove who is a nearby neighbor.
Three other residents were able to escape the flames.
White was found dead inside the home.
Skove said he was a wonderful guy.
"He was happy. He was funny. I know he loved to hunt, he had a big deer picture on the back of his pickup truck. He was a very decent human being," she said.
A state official said White worked for the Vermont Lottery.
"Tim White was a friend and colleague who worked at the lottery for over 13 years as a field sales representative," a representative said. "He took tremendous pride in helping our agents and customers, contributing to our success. The lottery has a small staff and his loss will be great."
Vermont State Police and the state fire marshal's office joined firefighters to investigate a fire that Guilford Fire Chief Jared Briston said took a toll on his members.
"Not so much physically but mentally; we've got a lot of members that haven't see this stuff," he said.
The Red Cross said it was assisting those who were displaced by the fire.
A family dog also survived.
The house appears to be a total loss.
The chief medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Investigators said the fire originated was in the basement, but said the cause is undetermined.
It does not appear to be suspicious, police said.
Few other details have been released.
