Chiefs Tried Out Three Including S Obi Melifonwu

According to Howard Balzer, the Chiefs brought in three free agents for tryouts on Thursday including S Obi Melifonwu, WR Rashard Davis and LB Marquis Flowers.

This is the fourth visit for Melifonwu since he became available last week. He has also met with Saints, Cowboys and Patriots.

Melifonwu, 24, was selected by the Raiders with the No. 56 overall pick. He’s in the second year of his four-year, $4.5 million contract and set to make base salaries of $669,972 and $824,944 over the next two years.

The Raiders placed Melifonwu on injured reserve coming out of the preseason last year while he was working his way back from knee surgery and later brought him back.

Melifonwu was waived with an injury designation during the preseason and later reverted to the Raiders’ injured reserve list before being cut loose on Tuesday.

In 2017, Melifonwu appeared in five games for the Raiders and recorded seven tackles and no interceptions or pass defenses.

During his four-year college career at Connecticut, Melifonwu recorded 349 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 16 pass defenses, two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumble.

Flowers, 26, is a former sixth-round pick of the Bengals back in 2014. He was traded to the Patriots at the start of last season in return for a 2018 seventh-round pick.

Flowers played out the final year of his four-year, $2,298,680 contract before returning to the Patriots this offseason. Unfortunately, he was released coming out of the preseason and later signed by the Lions.

Detroit released Flowers a few weeks ago.

In 2018, Flowers has appeared in five games for the Lions and recorded two tackles.
