Treat to Try: Macarons by Mjomii Artisan Dessert House

There are a lot of macarons to experience in this city, but a newcomer is offering a version of the sweet meringue-based confection that is one of the best macarons in Columbus. Mjomii is a home-based bakery that started showing up at the markets and bazaars around the city this year and will be expanding to a kiosk in September.

Owner Calvin Kim was drawn to the unique flavor combinations from fresh ingredients and started developing his macaron recipes in 2016.

“Flavors from my childhood in South Korea are a big influence on the flavors I choose,” says Kim. “I also seek out new and interesting flavors whenever I travel and often find inspiration from those as well. I focus on preserving the natural flavor of all of my ingredients.”

Kim studied interior design in college and worked for an advertising agency once he graduated, but has always had an interest in food and flavors. The name Mjomii reflects that.

“I wanted the name to reflect my Korean heritage and the subtlety of the flavors of my desserts,” says Kim about his business’ name. “After much deliberation, I decided on the name “Mjomii” (pronounced “myo-mee”), which means a delicate, delicious flavor in Korean.”

Kim has enjoyed cooking for a very long time and credits his parents’ influence for that.

“But it was my wife who sparked my interest in baking,” he says. “I began baking shortly after we got married in 2014 and my passion has only grown ever since!”

Kim uses delicately flavored buttercreams as the filling between his light as air, yet dense and chewy, cookie shells. The cookies have a beautiful color and make a delicious two-three bite dessert.

Each macaron sells for $2 each.

Flavors we tried include Black Currant, Honey Lemon, Salted Caramel, and Vanilla Rose. Each distinct flavor profile shines through with every bite.

Kim has found success with his recipes and will be opening a kiosk in the Polaris Mall on Monday, September 17, 2018. The kiosk will be on the lower level of the mall next to the play area, Saks 5th Avenue, and Lush. They plan to carry about ten flavors, seven regularly, and will continue to accept custom and special orders.

Mjomii will be participating in the Moonlight Market on Saturday, August 11, 2018 and the German Village Makers Mart on Sunday, August 26, 2018. Find Mjomii at those markets until they open their kiosk at Polaris Mall.
