Match Report
Auckland
The Welsh Rugby League team slumped to a humiliating 31-5 defeat by the Auckland provincial side in Auckland yesterday.
Auckland dominated the game, played mostly in rain which made the ground and ball greasy, and ran in five tries to Wales' one. Auckland, who led 21-0 at half-time, were in top form from the start. Their steady back line capitalised on poor defensive work by the Welsh.
The strong Auckland line-up included nine internationals. It was only during two brief periods - one in each half - that the Welsh team looked like making any impact. The tourists may have been demoralised by the lop-sided penalty count of 14-3 against them, but they won the scrums 17-12, whenever possession was gained, however, it was inevitably frittered away.
Only Clive Sullivan and acting captain Kel Coslett played like internationals in the Welsh team.
For Auckland, Alby Hansen (2), John O'Sullivan, Warren Collicoat and Fred Ah Kuoi scored tries and Collicoat kicked eight goals. Wales' points came from a try by Colin Dixon converted by Coslett.
Because we have no scorer times, the timeline below is not in order.
