Higher English - Evening

Please note - this course will run online on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 9pm.

Higher English offers learners the opportunity to develop detailed and complex language skills in the contexts of literature, language and media. Candidates will develop reading and writing skills through studying, analysing and responding to a wide variety of texts. Students will learn to understand, analyse and evaluate the way language is used in a wide range of literature and texts and develop their own discursive and creative writing skills.

This is an online course. Throughout the course there will be a substantial amount of homework and personal study required. Being able to use computers is essential so that you can take part online, although you will be shown how to work 'Teams' if you are not familiar with the software. You will also be occasionally expected to attend the College physically for assessments and the final exam. 

If you are interested in studying a higher in the evening, you will be required to submit an application for consideration.

Course content includes:

  • Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation
  • Critical Reading (literature)
  • Course assessment (SQA exam and folio of essays)

Higher National qualifications can be used to support progression in a variety of work or study contexts.

  • English at Standard Grade Level 1 or 2 National 5 or Intermediate 2 at A or B.
  • Previous study of Higher English (resits)
  • An HND/ Degree
  • Applicants who do not meet these criteria but have relevant experience or alternative qualifications will be considered.

Course places are only secured after payment/funding has been arranged.

As per the College Tuition Fees and Refund Policy, tuition fees are non-refundable except under exceptional circumstances. Student Paying Fees

Fees of less than £100 must be paid in full. Payment by instalment is available, provided the course fee is greater than £100. You can access a direct debit form here

An initial 30% deposit is required in order to secure your place. Instalments can be paid via direct debit over the duration of the course, up to a maximum of a 4-month period. You will not be able to apply online if paying by direct debit, please contact Evening Admissions - eveninginfo@forthvalley.ac.uk.

Employer Paying Fees

If your employer is paying for your tuition fees, an Employer Agreement Form or letter from your employer must be submitted prior to or upon enrolment. You can access the Employer Agreement Form here and this should be returned to Evening Admissions - eveninginfo@forthvalley.ac.uk

Fee Waiver

Some students may be eligible for a tuition fee waiver if in receipt of certain types of benefits. Fee waiver evidence must be submitted either before or upon enrolment. Refer to our Tuition and Fee Waiver Policy for further information.

ITA Funding

This course is eligible for ITA funding. You may be eligible if you are:

  • Aged 16 or over
  • Not in education or involved in any other SDS funded programme
  • Unemployed and looking to get back into work
  • Employed and earning less than £22,000 per year
  • Resident in Scotland

If you wish to use ITA funding towards the cost of this course, you must first apply for the ITA funding through the My World of Work website. ITA funding will cover up to £200 of course fees.

You will not be able to enrol for your course online if using ITA funding. Once you’ve applied for funding, you will receive a confirmation email from SDS and the college with instructions on how to book your course.
