What can I say? This book is the end of an era, the end of a series that has had me hooked from day 1 and a series that started me on a journey that I am still undertaking with other books.

Midnight Breed is pretty much a brotherhood of vampire warriors that fight for the good. It helps that they are hot (ha ha) and there is a story behind every single one of them. Lara Adrian created a world where plots thicken, storylines have you edging on your seat, emotions jump all over... it is an amazing world to be in.

This final book about Chase Thorne ends the series wonderfully and it has the other warriors and their mates fighting in full flow for their future. I absolutely loved it.

I am extremely sad to be at the end of this series but I am so happy/lucky to have had the chance to read every single book along the way. It literally is The End.

Wish I could give King of Midnight more then 5 stars!!!! This last book in the Midnight Breed series was Outstanding!!!! This book took me through so many emotions and had me crying like a fucking baby! What a fabulous way to end a series. Lara not only gave us one of hell of a story but she gave a truly beautiful ending after taking us through a journey filled with betrayal and heartache and nearly losing one of my all time favorite breed warriors! I feel like I've been through the wringer and then some. I don't want to give too much away since this is the final book in this series but I will say that Lucan and Gabrielle's son Darion is a born leader just like his dad except he goes to the beat of his own drum and because of having a all bets off attitude the breed and Alantean's and their queen live on. The chemistry and sex between Darion and Selene was hot!!!! Sex with a breed warrior is always all consuming and they always give it their all !!! I've been hooked on this series from the beginning and have read almost every book with the exception to a couple of novellas that I have yet to read. Lara Adrian is a fabulous writer and everyone of the books in this series of 18 books was a 5 star read for me! I love vamps and the Midnight Breed series is one of my top 10 all time favorite vampire series of all time! If you haven't read this series and you love hot sexy tatted alien vampires who are in search of their breed mates and fighting to protect humanity pick up just one of these books and I promise you will be thanking me! No one will love you or fuck you like a breed warrior! Their truly amazing vamps! Until next time Luv's💋

5 stars for a fantastic finale!

This was always going to be a bittersweet read for me – the Midnight Breed series is one of my favourites, I have so much love for these characters and I look forward to each and every one of the books, so this being the last was always going to come with a mix of emotions. I’m so sad to see the series end, but Lara Adrian has delivered an exciting, emotional and explosive ending for her much-beloved series, giving it a well-deserved, satisfying send-off.

This is Darion’s book, bringing the series full circle, as Darian on is the son of Lucan and Gabrielle, whose story was the first of the Midnight Breed books (Kiss of Midnight). Lucan is the founder and leader of the Order, and Darion has grown up within the group of fighters, becoming a fierce warrior himself, and a valued member of the group. When he is forced to step in for his father, he finds himself suddenly leading the confrontation against the Order’s many enemies, and it’s a battle he’s more than ready for.

“We didn’t start this war, but we’re sure as fuck going to finish it.”

After all of their years of fighting, the Order are facing three growing threats – the mysterious group Opus Nostrum, who are creating rogue vampires and setting them loose to wreak horrific violence, an Ancient ancestor who has control of powerful crystals who is prowling around with his own secret agenda, and the ruthless Atlantean queen, who has made it clear that she will go to any lengths to retrieve the crystals that belong to her and her people.

Darion has seen Selene, the Queen of the Atlanteans, over video chat, where they’ve exchanged harsh words. But despite her powerful threats, he couldn’t help but be completely captivated by her. So when the two races find themselves on a knife’s edge, Darion takes it up on himself to travel to her supernaturally hidden island to meet with her personally.

After previous books featured Selene as maliciously evil, I was keen to finally get to know her and, as expected, there is so much more to her than we have been shown. She’s strong and ruthless, yes, but she’s also vulnerable, lonely, and fiercely protective of her people and will do anything to protect them. When Darion Thorne arrives on the shores of her secret kingdom, she is not impressed, but there’s something about the dark and dangerous warrior that has her feeling things she hasn’t felt for centuries.

“Fuck” … “Why did it have to be you?”

There’s fantastic chemistry between Darion and Selene. There’s insta-lust on both sides, and though they taunt, bicker and threaten each other, neither of them can resist the mad attraction that sizzles between them, and I loved seeing these enemies very quickly give in to all that passion.

“I came here prepared to fight an enemy,” he murmured, his voice rough with need. “I came here expecting to feel contempt for you, not this. Christ, anything but this.”
He lowered his head and kissed her, hot and hard and deep.

It’s hot and steamy, and I was so on board with these two. They want to fight it, but they just can’t, and watching them crash together was just fantastic. I love Dare so much, he’s smart, he doesn’t take any crap, and he’s such a badass while also being deeply caring. And as a book hero (romantic and otherwise), he’s amazing! He has this charmingly irresistible arrogance that is so fun, and he’s the perfect balance to Selene’s seriousness and secretly scarred heart. He very quickly breaks down her walls, they fall hard and fast for each other, and it’s so beautiful!

Somehow, this dark Breed warrior who was so formidable, so expertly lethal, had become her safe harbor.
Her haven.

It’s a quick moving romance, but it needs to be, because there’s SO much else going on in this story! Between all of the enemies that they are facing, we also check in with different characters of the series, getting the opportunity to catch up with them and seeing where they’re at, and I LOVED THAT! I only wish there was time to check in with everybody, but I was grateful for those different POVs that we did get, which showed progression for some of the couples, and provided great closure to their stories.

But never fear, the ENTIRE Order are on board for this final outing, and it’s epic. Some people only get mentions, and again, I wish there would have been more, but if this book contained everything I wanted to see, it probably would have been 800+ pages. So again, what we see is so good, and had me grinning with excitement and anticipation. And as the final action went down, I was so into it I actually cheered out loud at one point. I loved being so caught up in it all.

This was such an enjoyable read. It had all of the Order action, excitement and intrigue that I was hoping for, with fun moments that keep things light and show the bond between everybody. The romance was fast-moving, and not as much of a focus as earlier books have had (which it had to be with everything else that was happening), but I still felt it. There’s also a strong emotional element to this book which really got me in the feels, and all of the different aspects of the story are beautifully wound together to create a fantastic finish to the series.

It's a great send-off for the crew, I’m so sad to say goodbye, but look forward to many rereads in the future.

5 stars!

* I would recommend reading all the previous books as this is the finale to the entire series and you need the background info.

As the son of the Order's leader, Darion Thorne has been raised to be an excellent tactician and leader amongst the other Breed Warriors. But with the constant threat of the Opus Nostrum, the Atlanteans and an Ancient walking around, nobody could have expected the catastrophic event that lead to Darion taking the lead of the Order. So when the Atlantean Queen Selene kidnaps her granddaughter Jordana and wants to trade her for one of the Atlantean Crystals, Darion takes it upon himself to get Jordana back. But what he couldn't have expected was his instant connection with Selene or the danger that approaches them.

Pro's:
+ It is nice that we finally take a closer look into the real heart of the Atlantean society, the court of Queen Selene herself. Even though it is just a peek, it was nice we finally got to this point and we saw a different side of the court.
+ All the scenes between Lucan and Gabrielle where the best in the whole book if you ask me. They go through quite the struggle in this book and since their were with me for such a long time ( through all the books), I was most interested in their journey.

Con's:
- For the finale of a series of 18 books, this was horribly rushed and flat. Especially when you compare it to earlier books in the series, this just misses the spark and spunk the other books had and even though Darion had a lot of potential, the romance and desicions of this story just did not work for me.
- When we left the previous book, there was stil A LOT of story that needed to tied up in this book, and unfortunately it was all thrown into a mishmash that was this book. It felt like the author was done with this world, because beautifully crafted storylines were just raffled off like no tomorrow.
- The romance was just sex and weirdness, I don't understand the energy between these people and they just didn't connect with me AT ALL. No cute moments, no snark, just violence and sex.

As far as series finales go, this might be one of the most disappointing ones yet. I LOVED most of this series, it's dark and grungy setting and the sprinkling of snark and humor. But this book, was by far the biggest injustice that could have happened to the series, there could have been so much potential and awesome story that we could have gotten. Instead, we got some flimsy excuse of a finale, with a confusing romance and storylines that are being finished up quicker than you can blink with your eyes. It was flat and boring and the only sprinklings of light are the scenes between Lucan and Gabriella and the fighting scenes on the end. So sad it ended like this, the other books are really good though :(

I hate to see this series come to and end, but this book wrapped things up in a good way. It was very harrowing though. A lot of our main characters were in peril, not sure if they were going to make it, a lot of people died, the big battle at the end made 2 factions have to work together or both would be gone. Then there was a big life saving moment for a key character, so much going on. But in the end, those that are left are stronger due to the new alliance and can re-build the world in a better way.

Sometimes you just know when you pick up a book there is going to be something magical about it.

King of Midnight is everything I hoped it would be and so much more. The author has done justice to the series in this well written and delivered read. The characters are powerful and engaging, the story is simply magnificent taking me on a journey of hope, love, betrayal, and acceptance. I closed the book knowing I had all my questions answered,
Well Done!! Lara Adrian you are a fabulous storyteller.

The Midnight Breed has captivated me from the first page of Kiss of Midnight to the last page of King of Midnight and all the surrounding short stories. It is bittersweet knowing this is the last book but I know whatever Lara Adrian has in store for us next will be every bit as brilliant and devouring.

If you have not read this series all I can say is WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!!

I am so so so hoping this book is longer than the last few. There is so much meat that needs to be fleshed out to bring Dare and Selene together and it's either going to be super amazing, or leave us feeling unfulfilled.

COMMENTS/NOTES: After 17 books and several novellas, I wanted a better heroine. Selene and Darion just didn't do it for me. Maybe it's the enemies-to-lovers thing, or Selene was just a bit too cold. She didn't show much vulnerability which I like in my heroines. I loved the story between Lucan and Gabrielle showing unconditional love. You get to revisit all the mated couples and some of my favs -Chase and Taavia, Mira and Kellan, and Nikolai and Renata.

AFTER READING:
SPOILERS AHEAD, BE WARNED!

Such a beautiful ending to a wonderful series. This last book was a farewell to the Midnight Breed series (at least it was in my mind).

Darion Thorne & Selene got a happy ending. Lucan is saved by Selene and the power of Atlantean crystals and becomes something totally different. Jenna gets her Ancient status closure. Jordana, Soraya & Selene get some kind of unfortunate closure, and Jordana & Selene get a chance for new beginnings.

Thank you Lara Adrian for wrapping these series like you did.

I so desperately wanted this book to be good, but in good conscience I can't give it more than two stars, and it gets that because I got glimpses and interactions of other couples. It certainly wasn't for Darion and Selene.

This series used to be one of my favorites, I remember Tegan and Elise's book was spectacular, and loving Rio and Dylan's chemistry, Hunter and Corrine's story, and the last book in this series I actually enjoyed was probably Nathan and Jordana's.

Ever since the couples in this series have relied on this insta love thing and I can't. I need build up, conversations, chemistry. Getting to know each other, getting to trust each other. It took nearly one third of this book for Darion and Selene to even be in the same room together, so I figured with all this build up, there would be SOME work up to their relationship. But no. They bang in like their second or third interaction and just instantly in love. I feel like I know less about Selene's personality after this book than I did before. This was bad, and I remember hating Micah's book, but god this felt worse. Honestly I'm glad it's over, I don't think I can stomach any more disappointment seeing what this series turned into.

synopsis

The son of the original couple and leader of The Order, Darion. And the Queen of the Atlantean’s, Selene. Darion has grown up around a band of warrior Breeds and he’s now a true leader. One that has to step in for his father and lead the battle against the Order’s three enemies. The Opus Nostrum, an Ancient ancestor and the Atlantean Queen. The Breed and the Atlanteans find themselves at odds and he takes it upon himself to go meet with her personally at her secret lair.

review

I certainly don’t want to give more than that away. This book packs so much! It’s fast paced and action packed in all the best ways. Let’s start off with the plot. Battles, enemies and all that. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. And give you all the closure you may need of any open ended threads.

The Order and the whole crew? Yep, all here. It was so nice to get to visit a bit with everyone. Also seeing them in such different ways and roles than in their own books. If Ms. Adrian would’ve made those parts even longer, I would’ve been happy. But she still managed to include so many great scenes to let us know how everyone is doing and give them a good send off.

Reading this out of order? Don’t. No really, don’t. This shouldn’t be a series read out of order. The buildup in this world is always in the background of every book. Even in novellas. And when you don’t have that context I think it can be a bit more difficult to appreciate or know what’s going on.

And we finally get to the romance. OMG I was not expecting to love these two as much as I did. Enemies to lovers, yes. She’s a badass Queen that will do anything to protect her people, but with a vulnerable side. He’s a tough as nails warrior willing to sacrifice everything for his own as well. These two alphas together brought some amazing and combustible chemistry. Selene also gave me Devina vibes (from the Fallen Angels/BDB) but without the unnecessary evil torture.

in conclusion

Fans of the Midnight Breed, this is a must read! It was bittersweet to see one of my most beloved vampire romance series come to an end, but Lara Adrian has made it all come full circle. King of Midnight was both a great series ending AND an amazing romance. And I can still say, for those of you that haven’t started this series, the Midnight Breed series is paranormal romance at its best. If you’re a fan of the genre it should be on your must read series list.

I’ve read the Midnight Breed series for over a decade now; it was one of the first romance series I started back in the day. It once was one of my favorites; however, after the author forwarded the series ahead in time twenty years, I never felt the connection to the characters and stories like I did in the beginning. That said, I kept with the series which concludes with King of Midnight.

The story opens shortly after the end of the previous, with the Order facing attacks from Opus Nostrum, who is turning Breeds into Rogues with Red Dragon. They are also worried about an Ancient who has two Atlantean crystals. Finally, they are trying to form an alliance with the Atlantean colony to help fight the Ancient and the Atlantean Queen Selene. Breeds and humans are being attacked on multiple fronts, and the Order cannot keep up. So why is it that the Order founder’s son, Darion, cannot stop thinking about Queen Selene despite their adversarial relationship?

I’ll start with the good. The story is a solid, satisfying ending to the series. The Order finds a way to defeat its enemies and survive the onslaught without losing sight of its core values. All of the original Order members, Breedmates, and their children make an appearance, and each seems to have found an HEA. The overall plot is exciting and entertaining. I enjoyed how the author ties up the battles and brings peace to the Order.

With that said, I continued to struggle with the writing of the books. First, there is so much repetition that the audiobook could have been about an hour shorter had it been edited to remove the constant reminders of who the Order is fighting, what Red Dragon is, and even what happened in previous chapters. Second, the romance between Darion and Selene did not work for me. They don’t even meet until 40% into the book, with the first part of the story reading more like a multi-POV urban fantasy. There are only a handful of POVs shared by the two main characters until they finally meet. I also had trouble with the fact that they have been enemies for years and just one look causes Darion to fall in love. Finally, there is a bit of an ick factor for me. She’s a thousands-year old queen with a granddaughter the same age as Darion. The narrator reenforces this age gap because her voice for Darion is too youthful sounding to be a seasoned warrior.

Narration: The story is shared in shifting third-person POVs of multiple characters. Ms. Huber uses a narrator voice that is very matter-of-fact and straightforward for all POVs. The neutral narrator comes off a bit robotic at times in contrast with the dialogue, which is emotion-filled. Every character has a nearly unique voice, usually distinguishable from the others. She adjusts her voice for gender and supplies a variety of accents. Her performance for Darion is suitable for the young warrior; however it reinforces the too-young-for-the-Atlantean-Queen image I had of him.

In the end, I’m glad I was able to listen to King of Midnight and discover how the series finishes. The author brings the series to a satisfying conclusion, one which fans of the series should enjoy.

Klappentext

it was a little too action packed for my tastes but i guess one has to end a 20 year series with a bang. i didn’t love the main pairing in this, largely because i hated selene. i didn’t love the ending which felt kind of cheap after the emotional roller coaster of a major character being sidelined for much of the story. and i didn’t love how neatly the ancient plot line was wrapped up after the previous book’s hyperfocus on it. too many new threads introduced and wrapped up in one book for it to be a satisfying conclusion. BUT i’ve been rocking with lara for at least a decade now so it’s a bittersweet moment wrapped up in a lot of nostalgia.

For the last book in the Breed series, L.A. gives us the story of the very first couple's son along with a real ending (even if I thought it was perhaps too was too syrupy).
What I liked:
-we see lots of previous main characters,
-we have a big battle,
-the bad guys are annihilated,
-and all the plots are solved.
What I disliked:
-the author frightens us by having the hero's father (the very first hero of the series) in a perilous situation,
-the heroine is the Atlantean Queen shown as a Breeds' enemy in all the previous volumes, but of course she has so many vulnerabilities underneath her tough exterior,
-the love story seems so rushed, they've been on speaking terms for a few days when they understand the other's desires and secrets, plus a 30 y-o male with a several millenia y-o woman who has never known love?

Wow, what can I say. I wanted this book so much but I also didn’t want it because I was not ready for this series to end. What a great ending to this series. I loved this book. There was so much going on. This brought all things to an end that everyone should love. Yes I feel we could always revisit this world but I was so happy with how she ended everything. The action and drama were fantastic. I cried & laughed and smiled so much while reading this book.

I received an ARC for my honest review.

Worth the wait. A great end to an amazing series.
Although I’m sad it’s over I’m happy it was such a satisfying ending.

With King of Midnight, Lara Adrian brings an end to her Midnight Breed series, which started in 2013 and has 18 novels plus a handful of novellas and the three novels in the spin-off series Hunter Legacy. Do I remember everything that happened in these books seeing I read them all? Not at all LOL. It means a good thirty couples spread on 20 years, I think you’ll understand.

King of Midnight begins directly where Fall of Midnight, the previous volume, ended:
-Opus Nostrum, the “terrorist” faction bent on eliminating the Breed, doesn’t hesitate to contaminate all the vampires with their drug that transforms even the most harmless in a bloodthirsty killer no one can reason with, and too bad for the humans who could die under their fangs;
-Selene, the Atlante queen, considering the current Breed are no better than the Ancients of which they come from, absolutely wants to eliminate them too, and also wants to take back all her crystals of power that have been scattered on Earth;
-the last Ancient, who has been sleeping for several thousand years, has just woken and has found two crystals his brethren had stolen and hidden, so he now has a frightening power.

When King of Midnight begins, Lucan Thorne, commander of the Order, falls into a trap made by Opus Nostrum and is contaminated by the drug, forcing his son Darion to temporarily take the lead of the Order. Let’s say that at this early stage I was ready to hate Lara Adrian because I absolutely refuse the idea that a hero could know a gruesome fate in a novel of the next generation. In order to put your mind at rest without spoiling too much, I’ll just say that everything will finally get better for the series’ very first hero, even if it is with some difficulties.
Just after that event, Jordana, the heroine of the 12th volume, Crave the night, and also the Atlante queen’s long lost granddaughter, is kidnapped by her grandmother while on a mission in the rebel Atlante colony. Selene demands in exchange that the leader of Order brings her back the crystal they have. Lucan being unavailable, Darion decides to go in Atlantis. Each one is going to discover that the other is different than what he/she imagined and the feelings are going to emerge.

I thought the love story between Darion and Selene was ill-formed and too fast. There are some banter, a few demonstrations of power on each part, and there you are, they yield to their desire before even trusting the other and begin thinking about feelings that come from nowhere. Darion, who must be 30 yo at most, seems to be emotionally more mature than Selene who has several thousand years of life behind her. In a clumsy attempt to make us appreciate her more, we learn that centuries ago she has been betrayed by the only man she thought she loved and since then she hides herself behind an ice façade. She also expresses regrets for the way she behaved with her daughter, leading to the latter’s suicide and the granddaughter’s disappearance. I still had trouble believing her change of mind, and the mutual declaration of love seemed very syrupy to me. What’s more, Darion, who was determined to do anything to crush Opus Nostrum and avenge his father, seems to forget everything in front of her immortal beauty…

Fortunately we follow at the same time the operations of the other members of the Order looking for Opus Nostrum, operation started before Darion’s departure. It’s the occasion to see again lots of previous characters, and the powers and strengths of each one are used at the maximum. There are several very graphic and bloody battle scenes, especially the big finale when the old saying “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” comes true once again. So yes, all the bad guys are smashed up in the same volume, but it was about time.

To conclude I have mixed feelings about this final: on one side I thought the romance was too easy and fast (I still stay unconvinced by this couple), and on the other I find that the resolution of the diverse plots and the fate of the diverse bad guys are done in a very satisfying way.

This series-especially the last few books I’ve read since having picked the whole series up again- has helped me through a very difficult time in my life, and for that it’ll always hold a special place in my heart. These characters have seen me through many sleepless nights, fighting off the dark thoughts and emotions that threatened to overwhelm me.

So for all of this, and the simple enjoyment of reading, I thank Lara Adrian for writing these novels. Getting lost in the world of books, among the problems that belong to others really does help. At least this was the case for me.

Anyway, I’ll miss these people.

What a rollercoaster ride!

I have been with the series since Adrian wrote the first book, Kiss of Midnight. I cannot believe that it has been 15 years! When she announced the series was ending I was heartbroken, but the finale was worth the wait!

The fire melts the ice in this one! Darion, the son of Lucan Thorne, melts the cold iced heart of a queen who’s been hurt and in turmoil for centuries. This final book is full of action and a captivating storyline. Definitely won’t want to put this novel down once you start!

It’s fitting that the series starts with Lucan and ends with his son. Lara does bring in all of our old favorites and new favorites in the finale of the series which makes it set for the perfect goodbye for long term fans of the series. Many loose ends are finally tied up and the storyline wraps up nicely.

Looking forward to see what she does with the Hunter Legacy series or other series she may start.
Farewell to the Order and our Midnight Breed world for now.

This is an emotional read for me, I discovered Lara’s Midnight Breed Series in the mid 00’s when Amazon recommended Kiss of Midnight and I have never looked backed! I’ve become a fan of all Lara’s work.

King of Midnight is an ending coming full circle, we started the series with Gabrielle & Lucan and now we end with their son Darion.

I honestly don’t want to go into too much detail because it’s an experience I don’t want to ruin for anyone. But whilst I was sad to see it end, Lara absolutely did magic with this 💜💓💜💓

Can’t wait to see what she has in store for us in the future 🥰🥰

Great ending to the series. Ain't going to lie this book had me in tears on several occasions. With it being the last one I went through a roller coaster of emotions with Lucan. He was where it all started and I didn't want to accept that he might die. Glad it worked out in the end with a happy ending. Great job Lara Adrian.

Bravo Lara Adrian! Bravo!
A fitting ending for the series. I couldn't put the book down. I fell in love with Lucan from book 1 and to have the last be his and Darions book was perfect. It was also very nice to see everyone come together in the last couple books. Cheers to the Order and their peace
