AUSTIN (KXAN) — Investigators continue to look into what caused a natural gas buildup inside a Southeast Austin home, resulting in an explosion that sent two people to the hospital.

Crews with Texas Gas Services turned off natural gas in the neighborhood surrounding Bendridge Trail, where the explosion happened Saturday.

They’ve been out at the scene every day since the explosion, digging up stretches of the street and yards as they work to figure out what went wrong.

Texas Gas, the Austin Fire Department, and the Texas Railroad Commission are all looking into how the explosion happened.

In a statement to KXAN News, a spokesperson for the Railroad Commission said it’s working to determine if Texas Gas was in, “compliance with Railroad Commission pipeline safety rules.”

Video taken by a neighbor and shared with KXAN shows the two victims sitting on the curb immediately after the explosion with neighbors covering them with blankets.

Through public records searches and conversations with neighbors, KXAN has learned their identities.
Local hospitals report the man in his 50s is in serious condition, while the woman in her 40s is critical.
