@NanooksHockey's Thompson Named WCHA Defenseman of the Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. –
On Monday, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association named Alaska Nanooks hockey's junior defenseman Tristan Thompson the conference's Defenseman of the Week. It is Thompson's second WCHA weekly honor of his career and the Alaska Nanooks hockey team's fifth of the 2018-19 season.

The Nanooks faced the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers in a two-game WCHA series on the road last weekend, earning a 3-1 victory on Friday before posting a 5-2 win on Saturday. The pair of victories marked Alaska's second conference sweep of the season since Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 against Ferris State at home. Additionally, the sweep marked Alaska's first WCHA sweep on the road since February 2018 against the then-No. 20th-ranked Northern Michigan Wildcats.  The Nanooks walked away from the weekend with six conference points, ranking them seventh in the in the league standings with 26 points.

On Saturday, Thompson registered his second three-point game of the season with one goal and two assists. Of Thompson's three points, all came on the man-advantage with his goal eventually becoming the game-winner.

The Canmore, Alberta native ended the weekend with seven shots on goal and a plus-two rating.

Alaska will enjoy a bye-week this week, as they prepare to take on in-state rival Alaska Anchorage in a two-game WCHA series on Friday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Carlson Center. The two-game series will also mark the opening series of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup. Puck-drop both nights is scheduled for 7:07pm AKST.
