In Short

  • Rain damages roads, forces villagers to make cloth crade
  • Woman in labour carried through forest for 2.5 hours
  • Labour pains get worse, goods carrier used to take her to hospital

A sturdy pole of bamboo, cloth and a pair of strong shoulders: that was all a group of villagers in the Erode ghats had at their disposal this week when a young woman in labour needed emergency transport.

A video obtained by India Today TV shows Kumari, 22, being carried in the makeshift cradle out of a forest, down a slushy, unpaved path and towards the goods carrier that took her to hospital on Monday.

Rain had completely damaged the roads leading to Kumari's hamlet, Sundappur. So when her husband called an ambulance, he was asked to bring his wife to the plains first.

Then, Madesh and other villagers trekked for 2.5 hours through the forest, covering six kilometres.

But by the time they reached the plains, Kumari's labour plains had grown worse. It would be too late too call the ambulance again and wait.

So they used the goods carrier instead.

And now, some good news: Kumari was taken to a primary health centre in Bargur, where she gave birth to a baby boy.

Both mother and child are doing well.
