One Night With the Millionaire

Rate this book
Over-forty, single mom Tess Howland's life is all about caring for other people. Indulging in a one night stand is just what she needs. She doesn't expect to meet anyone she would introduce to her kids, especially not some rich playboy who acts like a big kid himself. Even if he keeps giving her the best sex of her life.

Millionaire Miles Prescott can't get the sexy nurse he met at a fundraising gala out of his head. For the first time ever, he doesn't want a woman with no-strings-attached. He wants everything—even it comes with a ready-made family with a woman in her forties. Suddenly, helping with homework doesn't sound like the worst thing in the world, especially if it means being near Tess.

But what happens when he’s ready to step up and she says no?

the setup…
Tess Howland doesn’t have time for a relationship. She’s a divorced mother of three children and has a thriving career as a nurse. So when she goes to a formal gala on a precious free night to help raise money for her hospital, she has every intention of spending it with someone interesting but walking away in the morning. Miles Prescott is the youngest in his wealthy family and hasn’t yet found his calling. He’s attending the gala in his deceased father’s stead at his mother’s request. When he meets Tess and they both cozy up to the attraction, he’s got the same idea in mind as her…until the next morning and he wants more and she doesn’t!

the heart of the story…
I loved the idea of flipping the gender stereotypes where it’s the guy wanting more from a one night stand. It can be tricky to pull off as it’s hard to believe someone like Miles…handsome and wealthy…would suddenly shift in his thinking. But Miles was already at a crossroads, especially following the death of his father. He was tired of living aimlessly so him wanting to pursue someone like Tess was quite believable. Both of them were extremely well developed characters, which made them appealing individually and as a couple. Their issues felt real and gnarly and it took a lot for them to work through. Nothing felt contrived.

the narration…
*sigh* Here was my challenge. For some reason, the narrator chose to use an affected form of speech, sort of like a bad Boston accent (the story is based in Chicago) that elongated second syllables. It was beyond annoying and took some time to adjust. That was unfortunate because she’s got a great tone but this was not good.

the bottom line…
This is a really good story, one I enjoyed despite my issues with the narrator. Tess’s role as a divorced working mother felt authentic, nothing extraordinary but the real life challenges that brings, which made her extraordinary. Miles, fortunately, wasn’t the spoiled rich kid, but someone who was raised with strong values so the foundation for a more substantive life was there. Tess’s support system are her friends she met from a divorce support group and I’m looking forward to learning more about them in future stories. This was a wonderful romance between two mature adults coping with real life issues. 3.5 stars

Loved this story! Just jump right in and hold on!
Tess is a single mom, a little older and seriously needs just one night. One night without any strings and at the (no pressure here) urging of her friends decides to jump in with both feet. She meets Miles who is a little younger and doesn't understand the word No or one night only. I loved these two! It's the perfect romance with no angst and totally relatable characters and it hits all the happy buttons.
Watching these two maneuver their way through their relationship and Miles fitting in with her bunch was perfect. Shannyn's writing is stellar and it's worth a second read.

Tess Howland, the divorced heroine here, knows how to bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan, folks. She works tirelessly as a nurse juggling multiple side jobs to keep her bills paid and more importantly, her three children happy and healthy. The latter often involving dealing with a clueless, doctor ex-husband, who claims to care but not stepping up in all the ways that count. I’d like to tap Tess on the shoulder and remind her she should swallow her pride and accept more help. Whether that comes in the form of asking for beaucoups/bookoos/bukus (hey, no matter the language you speak it all means the same - “lots”) more alimony or the generous help Miles offered. Her ex-hubby can clearly afford it.

Speaking of rich, Miles is obviously a millionaire. No, I’m not a detective. The title told me so. He’s lived a charmed life as a happy, go lucky Good Time Charlie until one night with Tess makes him realize he now wants what he never knew he needed, a real relationship. Yes, he’s made past mistakes and has a party boy history, but somehow Tess seemed to flip a switch in him that made him want more out of life and himself.

I enjoyed their stumbling into love experience but was somewhat frustrated at times with their doubts and insecurities about where they ultimately were headed. They go back and forth quite a bit, which creates on and off again relationship angst. The constant is their off the charts steamy chemistry and genuine feelings for one another.

Tess is super protective of her kids to the point she has some knucklehead moments. One major one in particular near the end. Honestly, at one point I was surprised Miles didn’t walk away early on. He thankfully seemed intent on going the distance most of the time but would mentally second guess himself, too. Tess was constantly testing the waters and wind speed of their relationship in fear eventually Miles would feel overwhelmed and want to move on to a lady love with less responsibilities. Personally, I loved how Miles for the most part seem determined to stay steady the course, though even he got lost and caught up in his own head/ misgivings on occasion.

So, if you are up to spending the evening with an “it’s complicated” relationship angst filled romantic tale featuring a couple from completely different lifestyles, you might want to consider this book. As usual, this author’s writing flows seamlessly. Just prepare yourself, my fellow romance book loving friends, for several graphic, hot and steamy smexy scenes right from the very beginning.

Romance Safety Gang:

Title: One Night With the Millionaire, Author: Shannyn Schroeder, Pages: 279, stand-alone, single mom nurse heroine, millionaire good guy hero whose just now learning what real life is life for others, very graphic steamy scenes, no cheating, No OW/OM drama, no love triangle, lots of relationship angst.

I am glad I chose to read One Night with a Millionaire, written by Shannyn Schroeder! Having Tess, a woman in her forties as the lead character was quite refreshing! Sometimes it is nice to read something that is more relevant to my life. As a divorced mom of three, Tess and already have so much in common. (Check, check, check, and check! ) Tess works hard as a nurse and juggling motherhood and she decides to indulge in a one night stand.

Miles seems like a dream come true- is he perfect or simply too perfect? I like their chemistry and he seems genuine....but their lives are different in so many ways.... Tess is also a bit of a control freak which makes it difficult for Miles to convince her to let them have a chance of a relationship.

I liked this book, love the funny ending, and the kids are just simply great!!! A light romantic read!!!

Thanks to NetGalley,Shannyn Schroeder, and Entangled Publishing for an ARC of One Night with a Millionaire. As always, my opinions are my own!!

DNF at 10%.

Tess Howland is a single mother and a nurse, attending the annual fundraiser ball to garner funds for her patients. MIles Prescott is a millionaire . with a match-making mother, forced to accompany his mother to the ball since his father died.

I love a Cinderella romance and a single mother with a millionaire? Sign me up. Unfortunately, the little I read made Tess sound like a woman desperate for a one-night stand with literally anyone on her one night of freedom. When she talked about finessing the situation with Miles to get him suggest they spend the night together the gorge rose in my throat.

Maybe it gets better, maybe we see Tess being a caring mother and nurse but when I gave up there was precious little of that and an awful lot of a good-time girl on the pull.

Not for me.

I always love when a favorite authors starts something new. I really enjoy books by Shannyn Schroeder and couldn't want for this one. It wasn't just the fact that she was going to have a new book out that excited me so much. No, it was what this whole publishing line is about.

Entangled Publishing's new August line is about more mature people, ones in the thick of their lives, not just starting out.

I was so happy to hear about this. Now don't get me wrong, I'll still be reading books about younger characters just it's nice for a change.

For me right away the story takes off. You get a feeling for Tess and the busy life she's leading. You get the pressure shes' under. I liked her right away. She was really and the type of person you could relate too.

Now Miles is a little different then Tess. He kinda leads a charmed life and doesn't have to the worries or cares that Tess does. In fact, until he met Tess he liked his single all for me life. Then something changed and he realizes he wants more.

Don't you love how that happens when they find "the one".

I totally enjoyed the ride with these two and didn't want the story to end. It was filled with all the things I love about Schroeder's books, laughter, family and love.

5 Star Review of One Night With The Millionaire by Shannyn Schroeder (Daring Divorces #1)

I thoroughly enjoyed One Night With The Millionaire. Perhaps because the heroine is a little older; I’m not sure. The writing was great and I found myself diving right in and I couldn’t put the book down. From the first to the last chapter I was hooked.

A single mum and nurse in her forties, Tess Howland’s life is all about trying to maintain peace and a sense of balance; not only with her kids but also her ex-husband and work.

When the opportunity arises for a one night stand with sexy as sin, Miles Prescott, she decides to go for it, after all nothing will come of it, right? Imagine Tess’s shock when the millionaire is interested in pursuing more than the initial one night. What will Tess do? Will she accept or run?

Miles and Tess were fantastic together and I loved how accepting Miles was of her life and her children, without completely trying to take over.

This was a feel good romantic lover story that hit all the right buttons for me. I loved the interaction as they got to know one another and it was often amusing to watch as Miles navigated the “instant” family he got as their relationship progressed.

This book made me smile and was an entertaining and fun read.

Tess is a single mom of three kids. She has been divorced for a few years, yet never really dates. The only time she lets loose is once a year at the Saint Marks Gala. She works the crowd for funds for her department and then finds her one night of fun.
Miles is a bored playboy. He hates going to these fundraisers, especially since his father died a year ago. But tonight he must be strong and be there for his mother. Especially for this fundraiser. This was his father’s favorite fundraiser. So he will endure it and smile for his mother.

As Miles observes the room, he stops dead when his eyes land on a beautiful woman. As the night progresses Miles night improves. But all that changes when he wakes up alone in bed the next morning. No No that will not do.

When Miles tracks her down and offers to take her on a date, she says no. But no is not in Miles vocabulary. What was suppose to be one night turns into something that Tess is not ready to deal with.

This was such a fun and energetic read. The characters were wonderful. Tess herself is a very independent woman. She is so used to taking care of herself that she never has time for herself. Miles on the other hand is not the playboy that everyone makes him out to be. Even though she says no to him often, he never gives up.

Overall this book is a wonderful and fun Rom-Com. The characters are lovable and fun. I really enjoyed Miles perspective and how he tried to show he could fit into their lifestyle even though his is money. I also enjoyed the realization of the single mom angle. Sometimes people don’t understand what single mothers go through on a daily basis. It really gives us a clear picture. Great work incorporating real with fantasy.

If you are looking for a feel good romance with stubbornness, then this book is right up your alley. It is full of fun and witty banter. It has fun loving characters with a classic Cinderella vibe. So break out the wine, pick up this book and curl up for a good time.

I wanted this book to be a lot better than it was in actuality, this was a story of a single mom who meets a rich guy, insists on having sex with him every time they meet. Even though the story really gives little reason for it he falls madly in love and she is so "I can take care of any problems" that she is really not that likable to the reader IMHO.

I am sure the author wanted to portray a strong woman who has had a few hard times and now is making her own way in the world but what she gives us is a bit of a bitch who will go ballistic if a man tried to do anything to make her life easier or spend any money on her or her kids (there are some good reasons for the money on the kids thing but not to the level she takes it)

So by the time it ended I was happy for our contestants and kinda glad the book was over. so 3 Stars from me for a story that defied simple logic at every turn.

This is a sexy and fun romance that has Tess, a single mom of three, having a fun escape with Miles, a wealthy playboy. When their night of fun has the potential for something more, neither is sure what it means or how to manage it. The only thing Tess is sure of is that she doesn't need a man-child in her life and no one will hurt her kids.

I enjoyed this book and, while primarily the POV was Tess's, I also enjoyed Miles' perspective and how he approached trying to date a mom of three and how he could fit into their lives.

This is an entertaining novel that fans of the genre will love. The author is new to me and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.

Single mom Tess Howland catches the eye of playboy millionaire Miles Prescott at a fundraiser and deciding to throw caution to the wind they have a one night stand. Miles though wants more then Tess is willing to give. Tess can't deny the attraction to Miles but she has responsibility to her three children, but what happens when she takes a chance at finding the right one?

I liked this, I thought a lot of the struggles they shared were realistic. This is a great story for end of summer just put your feet up and relax too.

One Night With the Millionaire by Shannyn Schroder is the first book in her new Daring Divorcees series. Tess Howland is our heroine, and we meet her from the start; she is a nurse, as well as a divorcee with three kids. She is attending the Saint Marks Gala, an annual fund raiser for her hospital, and makes her rounds to convince people to donate to Saint Marks.

Miles Prescott, is a millionaire playboy, who attends this gala to please his mother and sister, who run their company, and expect Miles to step up and have a more active role; especially with their father having passed away a year ago. He notices a woman who immediately gets his attention, and makes sure to introduce himself to Tess. Miles knows how to attract woman, and Tess enjoys the attention he gives her. Tess is a workaholic, and has little time for herself caring for her three kids. But she decides since she is free, to have a one night stand with the handsome Miles. One night only. Best laid plans do not always work out.

Miles is not willing to let Tess go, as he enjoys her company, not to mention the sex. He sees in Tess, a woman different then his other woman, and perhaps a future, but can he convince her to allow him to be part of her life? In a short time, their relationship will heat up, and Tess cannot resist the hot sex with Miles. Tess tries to keep their relationship private, but Miles wants more. In time she will relent and have him meet her kids, who end up liking Miles.

What follows is a sweet, fun story with both slowly falling in love, but Miles will begin to become frustrated in his attempt to convince Tess that he wants a more permanent relationship with her and with her children. Tess after her nasty divorce pushed herself to be independent, self sufficient, and refuses to allow Miles, who is rich, to help. Will Miles be able to change Tess’s mind?

One Night with the Millionaire was a fun read, and wonderful characters, including Tess’s friends, children and Miles’s mother and sister. Shannyn Schroeder once again gives us a sweet romance that keeps us unable to put the book down. I look forward to reading more from this new series.

I'm so glad Entangled started their August line--"older" heroes and heroines FTW :)

I enjoyed One Night with the Millionaire, the first book in Ms. Schroeder's new Daring Divorcees series. It's a Cinderella fantasy story at its best--a single mother meets her millionaire at a charity gala, and their "one night" turns into more as Miles (slowly) decides being a playboy isn't what he wants anymore and Tess (very, very slowly) readjusts her all-about-everyone-else life to let him in. Tess isn't looking for a rescue--she doesn't really decide to give Miles a chance until a member of her friend group (the Daring Divorcees) challenges her to, and even when having a wealthy boyfriend could have helped her out of a difficulty or two, she is determined to help herself. ()

Tess and Miles were great together (even though their early relationship was really heavy on sex...) and Tess's kids added a bit of realistic fun to their story. I especially loved

At times Tess took her need to control things and resentment over her ex's actions a bit too far (black moment, I'm looking at you!) but fortunately the DDs helped her see the error of her ways before it was too late and a really fun HEA was the result.

I can't wait to see what stories come of the other challenges that were issued to the Daring Divorcees!

Rating: 4 stars / B

Tess is the momma bear to end all momma bears. She is devoted to her children and tries not to rely on anyone. She usually gives herself one night to be about her and when she meets Miles and things get steamy, she vows it is going to be a one time thing. The only problem with that is Miles and his wants. Never one to settle down, Miles is surprised when he can't get Tess out of his head.
Tess has walls built for a reason and she likes to be in control. Even though they agree to continue an intimate relationship, she doesn't want it to be more. Her friends tell her that maybe she needs to start dating again with someone exactly like Miles (the non-settling down type). While Miles agrees to it, he also decides that he wants to get to know her better. Little by little, her walls start coming down and they both realize that their hearts are involved. When Miles makes one mistake and tries to fix it by using his money (a major point of contention from the beginning), it threatens to break them up for good. Miles pulls out all the stops to get her to realize that he isn't going anywhere, but it might not be enough. I can't wait to read more stories about her friends in the Divorce group.
While I loved this book, there were times that I wanted to strangle Tess. I understood why she was the way she was, but I also felt she was being unfair at times. Miles melted my heart. Once he realized that he wanted Tess he went for it and didn't back down.

Posted on What I'm Reading

At this point I'm 63% into the story. Anyway, I'm still plowing through and loving the story far. I will have an updated review later this evening tomorrow morning. Anyway, I love the fact that it' not your typical romance. I mean who wouldn't want a night with a millionaire. We have Tess who is trying to do it all, she's a mom, works real hard and trying to put her kids first. She doesn't really have time for dating. She meets Miles he's amazing. Seriously, he's willing to work with her schedule and is willing to do anything to be part of her life. So, yeah at this point I'm loving the story. At the same time, I want to scream at Tess to give the man a chance, do he's willing to try. I will come back to you all later with the rest of my thoughts.

The update: Well, I liked the story. It was a pretty good read and different from most stories. However, Tess kind of drove me nuts toward the end. She was a bit too controlling for my taste. Granted I get that she's a single mom doing most of it on her own. In some ways she kind of brought it upon herself. I adore Miles, because he was a sweet guy and totally willing to work with her. Even her children liked him. However, I was glad her friends were a great sounding board for her to let her know she's was in the wrong. Anyway, a decent read, and I kind of can't wait to see the other divorcees have in store.

One Night With the Millionaire by Shannyn Schroeder

**3.5 Blushes**

Tess Howland's a single mom in her 40’s with a demanding job as a nurse.

Miles Prescott is a millionaire, good time with no strings type of guy.

Until these two meet and then all bets are off. She’s thinking he’s a one night stand. A best sex of my life type of 1 night stand! He’s thinking she’s gorgeous and one night stand. As it turns out, it becomes much more than he could ever have imagined.

I understood why Tess was hesitant to let a man “help” her but it comes across as a little harsh. Her ex is a not a present parent. Miles is younger and has no responsibilities. Mixing in children always makes things more complicated. Miles is totally out on a limb here but he wants Tess in his life -permanently.

I loved that these characters were older than the typical romance published currently. The dance of kids, exes and new loves is very much a part of real life these days. In One Night with a Millionaire, the kids added laughter and levity. It was needed here. Honestly, great sex is great, and lord know I love all things steamy but I didn’t get their connection. I didn’t love Tess but I LOVE angst and that there is aplenty. I also appreciated Shannyn Schroeder giving us dual point of views.

Single parents are all the rage but what I loved about this was it’s a single mum in her forties trying to make ends meet, keeping her three children happy and healthy as well as trying to appease the ex husband.
Tess has been divorced for a few years and dating has never been on the cards until she meets Miles at the Saints Marks fundraiser, her job is to work the floor raising funds for her department but when she comes across the hot bored playboy the last thing she expects is a wild night of passion....
Miles is only there because it was his late fathers fundraiser, he is bored with charity circuit but he is there to support his mother, what he didn’t expect was to wake up in the morning and find the woman he spent a passionate night with to have disappeared in the middle of the night.....
This is a present time Cinderella story, it’s fun, it’s romantic and it has characters you can’t help falling in love with. I loved watching this couple get to know each other and I loved seeing Miles learn how to deal with an instant family who may or may not be looking for a father. If you love romance with a feel good factor this is a must read. Can’t wait to read more from Shannon Schroeder

This was a good book. Tess Howard is a nurse and a divorce mother with three children. The one night a year that she dresses up and wants to have a good time is the hospitals gala, and charity ball. She also hopes maybe she can get lucky with a decent man for just one night and be a woman for a few hours and not a mom. I find that this is what most wife’s want from theirs husbands a date night if you will, to feel special. So why can’t she feel special for one night. This night she meets Miles Prescott who just happens to be a Millionaire. They do spend the night together and it is very nice, but it turns out Miles wants more. Tess though she likes him does not want more she was only thinking about one night, and when he asks to see her again they once again make it to the bedroom. It does take time before Tess will let Miles around her children, and as she keeps explaining to him they come from two different worlds. Miles though keeps after her and when he promises the youngest boy Billie something but make it. Does this give her a reason to break up or to work things out? Read this story to find out. A good story with good characters. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com

This is the first book that I have read by this author and I am totally in love with her writing. This book captured my attention from the moment I started reading it. This book is about Tess and Miles. Tess is a divorced mom with three kids who really does not get a lot of help from her ex-husband. She is a very strong organized woman who always like to be in control. Miles still does not know what he really wants to do with this life. He lives his life really one moment to the next not really thinking about the future. Then he meets Tess. Tess makes him want things in life that he never really wanted before. Tess is really afraid to let Miles get to close to her and her kids because she fears being let down and worst of all hurting her children. This book is just such a great romance book with just the right amount of drama thrown in to keep you on your toes. Tess's children are really great and reading how they interact with their mom and Miles is such fun. The other divorcee's in Tess's group are a hoot. I cannot wait to see where this series heads next. Thanks Net Galley. I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange for an honest review.

Tess Howland, is a divorcee and mother of three children. She works two jobs to support herself and her children along with the child support from her ex-husband. Lately she has spent so much time taking care of others that she has forgotten how to take care of herself. That will change when she attends a gala event and meets millionaire Miles Prescott. Miles is all about fun and wants to have fun with Tess. After their first night together, Miles realizes that he needs more than one night or a fling, he wants to spend time with her and maybe her children? The sex is amazing and Miles has no intention of giving up on Tess. Miles has never been around children and he will have to learn to accommodate their needs in to his life. Will Tess relax and trust Miles to be in her life…her children’s lives? I very much enjoyed this romance between somewhat older adults with young children added in to the mix. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

Miles has to work at it!

Divorced nurse Tess Howland only lets her hair down one night a year and that’s after the benefit for the hospital that she works in the NICU department because her three kids come first. Tess meets Miles Prescott and they hit it off and enjoy the evening when Miles asks her to spend the night with him at the suite that he reserved. Tess snuck out in the early morning but Miles decided to track her down at the hospital.

Miles had a hard time getting Tess to date him because of her kids and that he came from a lot of money but he decided she was worth taking the time to see her and slowly she changed her mind but not without some roadblocks.

I’ve haven’t read many books lately where the woman has finished having children and talks to the guy about it in the story and not off-scene but it definitely works in the story!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tess is a nurse and a single mom who lets herself have one night of freedom a year by picking up a stranger at a hospital benefit. Miles is the youngest son of a wealthy family who’s never had to work too hard at life or getting a woman’s attention. When he meets Tess and decides he wants more than one night, he’ll have to convince her he’s worth it.

This was entertaining but the central conflict didn’t feel real to me. Miles wasn’t a very well developed character beyond his money and his desire for Tess. He treated her and her children well, but he seemed more like a fantasy written by a single mom—handsome, wealthy stranger who comes into your stressful life and just wants to help. But I liked several of the secondary characters in the divorce support group, so I’m looking forward to reading their stories.

This is the start of a good thing. A series that addresses the lives of mature couples trying to juggle ex-lives, new-lives and children is sure to be a hit. Tess and Miles are a couple that start out thinking they are only having one night together and end up with a lifetime. The author accurately describes the angst a mother feels, under normal circumstances, bringing a new partner into her children’s lives. She explores the dilemmas that divorced parents often struggle with such as loneliness and stress. The children add fun and hilarity and bring lightness to the story. It is work that the author can be very proud of and the rest of the series should be just as entertaining based on the characters we have been introduced to in the divorce group.

One Night With The Millionaire by Shannyn Schroeder is one of those precious trinkets I read when I am in between books or have just finished some heavy reading. One Night.. is a nice romantic short read, I finished it in one sitting and it is one of my guilty pleasure genres. I am not a die hard romantic but I do like reading romance novels from time to time.

The plot is pretty common, single mom of multiple kids slogging to make ends meet , meets cute /hot rich guy , wants to date but is resisting because of responsibilities. Guy steps up makes everyone happy.. and they lived happily after. :D

The writing style is very nice, clean without over exposition which happens sometimes in these genres. The story moves in a nice brisk walk without the meandering !

I love happy endings!! Will definitely check out other books from Shannyn Schroeder!

My readometer says 3.5/5 *
