I don't remember how I happened upon this book, nor do I understand why I read beyond its title to get to the book description. ROYAL BASTARD. 'Nuff said there to turn me off. I'm a romance reader who doesn't mind a royal or two in historical romances, but these modern-day princes and princesses from fictional kingdoms who come to America (or other places) and fall in love with commoners just seem silly to me.
Well, it turns out there's not really any royal here at all. There is an English earl and his estranged American grandson. It also turns out that the story is well written, cute, funny, sexy, romantic, and filled with interesting, quirky people.
The author is American but she seems, to my admittedly limited knowledge of life in the British Isles, to have gotten the U.S. guy and his bemusement at the way of life of the inhabitants of the quirky English village of Bowhaven translated well to paper. I have no idea if she has spent time in England or thereabouts but this story doesn't feel as clueless as others I have read.
As far as the plot, there's this aging Earl of Englefield who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and has no living heir except for an estranged American grandson, Nick Vane, of Salvation, Virgina. The earl needs Nick to come and learn the ropes about being an earl so he will be able to take over when the earl is no longer capable.
To this effect, the earl's young secretary, Brooke Chapman-Powell, daughter of the local pub owner and recently returned to Bowhaven after a disastrous attempt at life in Manchester, gets in touch with Nick to try to convince him to come to England.
But Nick is holding a huge grudge against his English family. His late father William had come to America, fallen in love with and married his mother, fathered him, and then was persuaded by his grandfather, the aforementioned Earl of Englefield, to annul the marriage and come back to England. To compound this, Nick's mother died young and he was placed in foster care. No reason in the world for Nick to be interested in his uncaring English relatives.
Well, I won't say more. You have to read this without more blabbing by me because the plot itself is slight. However, it's charmingly told. A delightful escape from life as we know it nowadays.

Sein adliger Vater war nie Teil seines Lebens, doch nun soll Nick nach Englefield, um sein Erbe anzutreten. Dabei wollte der alte Earl of Englefield den rebellischen amerikanischen Enkel nie als Teil der Familie akzeptieren ... Und Nick hat auch gar kein Interesse daran, seinen Großvater zu treffen, aber lässt sich dann doch von dessen unnachgiebiger Assistentin Brooke davon überzeugen, der Sache eine Chance zu geben.
Brooke kam nach schlechten Erfahrungen in der Großstadt zurück in ihre gemütliche Heimat und ist entschlossen, der Stadt zu helfen. Arbeitsplätze verschwinden und der alte, sturköpfige Earl mag keine Veränderungen, dabei sind auch seine eigenen Finanzen alles andere als rosig. Als sich auch noch sein Gesundheitszustand verschlechtert, will er Nick zu seinem Nachfolger machen und Brooke soll dabei helfen, Nick zu einem englischen Gentleman zu erziehen.
Nick ist kreativ und bringt neuen Schwung in das alte Städtchen, was Brooke zwar anstrengend findet, aber gleichzeitig erfüllt es sie mit Hoffnung, weil es genau das sein könnte, was die Stadt braucht. Beide haben viele Ideen, um die Stadt zu modernisieren und Touristen anzulocken, aber der traditionelle Earl stellt sich quer und lässt lieber zu, dass alles langsam verfällt, solange es in seine altmodische Weltsicht passt. Nick und Brooke ziehen an einem Strang und kommen sich während ihrer Zusammenarbeit näher, aber ihre Unterschiede sowie die Tatsache, dass Brooke Englefield liebt, während Nick nur schnell wieder weg will, stehen immer zwischen ihnen.
Fazit
"Secret Royal" bietet ein ungleiches Paar, das aber gemeinsame Ziele hat und sich gegen einen altmodischen Earl behaupten muss. Eine schöne und unterhaltsame Liebesgeschichte!

Royal Bastard was such a fun, sexy, and sweet modern-day royalty story. It had all of Avery Flynn's humor entwined with a heart that drags you into these characters' lives. Brooke is trying to save her town, and Nick is jaded to the point he doesn't see what is right in front of him. I loved the connection that Brooke and Nick have from the very start of the story.

Well, what a change for Ms. Flynn. Nope, still a Rom-com but a totally different direction. And, I LOVED IT! Brooke was a hoot. Lady Lemon was prim and proper. But, when Brooke came out to play, she was anything but. Trying to put her past behind her, she will do just about anything for the people of Bowhaven. Even take on teaching an uncouth American how to become an Earl. In a month. With no help from the ailing Earl. Chin up … chest out … deep breath. Time to take on the task of a lifetime. Now, all she has to do is stop wondering what those eight-pack abs would feel like.
Nick has no intention of ever staying in England. His father didn’t want him, his grandfather turned his back on him during his time of need. Now, he’s summoned to the castle to take his rightful place as the next Earl of Englefield? NO. Then why is he negotiating his stay? Why is he negotiating his role in the castle? Why is he giving a damn about the people of Bowhaven and one Lady Lemon? He knows that love is fleeting and it’s not for him. He grew up with no one and he’ll die with no one. They didn’t care before, why are they caring about him now?
As Brooke’s past comes to light and Nick finds out not everything is as it seems to be, you can’t help but really fall in love with these characters. You also finally feel a little (just a very little) sympathy for the Earl since he was a total ass throughout the story. The push and pull between Nick and Brooke was hysterical. Ms. Prim and Proper vs Mr. I don’t give a damn. Then throw in Daisy and a bunch of zombies, yes zombies, you have a hell of a good time to look forward to. Avery Flynn did it again for me. She made me laugh and cry all in the same story.
I loved how and where she took this story. It was emotional, yet funny. It was cheeky yet serious. She has a way with words that always fulfills my needs in a story. Her heroines are tough and fierce. Her heroes are sexy and playful. Emotional, funny and sexy. Royal Bastard is a definite must read this summer.

This book was such a great escape. I was pulled into this story effortlessly. Avery Flynn always knows how to hook me on a story so that I never want to let go.
I really liked how this story was a change of pace for Flynn. This book is set in England and I liked her portrayal of a small English village. Her writing style was as addicting as ever. I can never get enough of her inviting prose. I really liked the fairytale aspect of this rom-com and I love the way that the story played out. The end of the story felt a little rushed to me. Almost like the conflict wasn't dramatic enough and that it was wrapped up too nicely at the end.
Brooke and Nick were characters that were both likable and relatable. While I very much enjoyed both characters, I didn't feel like I connected to them as much as I usually do when I read one of Flynn's books. Brooke and Nick both had depth and great character development. I also really liked the secondary characters in this book.
Brooke and Nick had a chemistry that jumped out at you from the beginning. I loved the way their personalities melded together. They were both very stubborn people and watching things play out between them put a smile on my face. There was some serious sexual tension between these two and the sexy times were hot.
Overall, this was a cute story that was very fun to read. It boasts likable characters, an exciting plotline, and a steamy romance. If you are up for an entertaining rom-com then look no further. I am excited for more books in this series.

Royal Bastard is such a fun read. Brooke is the PA to the earl. Nick is the earl’s only surviving heir. Nick’s grandfather and current earl paid off his mother when he was just a baby, so Nick wants nothing to do with that side of his family, however, Nick still goes to England.
Brooke’s love for her town and her determination to make sure the properties the earl controls is amazing. You can feel how much she cares about it. I loved Nick, he was definitely a fish out of water when he first arrived. He held true to his plan of not becoming earl and taking over for the man who rejected him from birth.
This book had some humor, some light moments and of course, plenty of secrets. There’s amazing chemistry between Brooke and Nick. Their banter, even through e-mail correspondence is fantastic.
If you’re looking for a royal romance between a British woman and an American man that will make you laugh and swoon definitely check this one out!

Royal Bastard is a lovely read. Avery Flynn manages to pump the fun, emotion and heartbreak right through the book.
Nick Vane, thinks his father is not much more than a DNA donor given someone sends cheques from England on a regular basis. He adored his late mother, but her death effectively ends the relationship, leaving Nick alone.
Brook is the Vane earl's PA. Her duty is to get the reluctant Nick to England, and teach him how to be an earl, because the present earl is developing Alzheimer's disease, and with losing his heir, William, (Nick's father) the elderly earl needs to groom Nick to be his heir.
Lots of secrets are exposed as Nick falls in love with Brook, but he also has to face his own demons and grow up from being the "man child" to take on his responsibilities and accept love.
Flynn writes with a very engaging style. I loved this book and I'm sure other readers will too.

This is a steamy, fun, contemporary romance mainly set in Yorkshire, England, though the male lead initially lives in America. He's Nick Vane, a successful inventor, who has never known his father as anything but his DNA donor. He's not amused when his grandfather's personal secretary, Brooke Chapman-Powell, keeps contacting him trying to get him to visit . . . . he's not interested in being the heir to the Earl of Englefield. However Brooke is persistent and he's intrigued enough to agree to go, if only to tell his grandfather to get lost! Can Brooke teach him how to behave like an Earl? Can she convince him to stay and take on the responsibilities which come with the position of Earl-to-be?
This is packed with laugh out loud moments, though Nick's childhood is certainly not a laughing matter. The mutual attraction between Brooke and Nick is irresistible but she has been burnt by love and the paparazzi before so is very wary of acting on that attraction. How will Nick get on with his uptight grandfather? Will revealing secrets from the past help heal rifts and help Nick find family at last?
There are some absolutely brilliant characters in this story - including Brooke's family and the other villagers. The delightful community is brought to life in the story and readers are given a taste of the beautiful countryside, too. This is a story about stubborn characters, revelations, Yorkshire and love. It is an easy read to escape into and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone who is looking for a steamy contemporary romance to escape into.

This is packed with laugh out loud moments, though Nick's childhood is certainly not a laughing matter. The mutual attraction between Brooke and Nick is irresistible but she has been burnt by love and the paparazzi before so is very wary of acting on that attraction. How will Nick get on with his uptight grandfather? Will revealing secrets from the past help heal rifts and help Nick find family at last?
There are some absolutely brilliant characters in this story - including Brooke's family and the other villagers. The delightful community is brought to life in the story and readers are given a taste of the beautiful countryside, too. This is a story about stubborn characters, revelations, Yorkshire and love. It is an easy read to escape into and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone who is looking for a steamy contemporary romance to escape into.

I’m always eager to dive into the next Avery Flynn release, and I’ve been desperate to dive into Royal Bastard since I heard the first thing about it. It comes as no surprise to know I devoured this one in a single sitting.
As always with Avery Flynn, I was pulled into the story from the first page and fell deeper in love with each detail I read. I adored the characters and I was hooked on their chemistry. The storyline pulled me in deep, with there being plenty of amusing moments throughout. In fact, I’m eager to see many of the side characters get their own stories as I need more of the people that we were introduced to in this one.
Even though this is another book that says things about the UK that makes me question if I’m being British wrong (we use miles, no matter what so many others seem to think), I could not put it down. Without a doubt, I cannot wait for more of this series.

Nick, der Amerikaner, soll der nächste Earl of Englefield werden. Nur leider kann sein Großvater ihn nicht dazu bewegen nach England zu kommen. Nick möchte gar nichts mit diesem Teil seiner Familie zutun haben, schließlich hatten sie ihn damals nicht davor bewahrt im Heim zu laden. Jahrzehnte galt Nick als schwarzes Schaf der Familie für den man nur zahlte, doch nun da kein Erbe vorhanden ist, soll er die Rolle einnehmen. Da sein Großvater an Demenz erkrank ist und die Zeit drängt, beauftragt dieser nun seine Assistentin den Erben nach England zu locken und Nick kann nicht leugnen, dass ihn diese Frau doch interessiert.
Die meiste Zeit befindet ihr euch auf dem Landsitz in England und in dem angegliederten Dorf. Alleine vom Setting hatte es eigentlich alles, was mir gefällt und ich mochte auch die Dorfgemeinschaft. Die Hauptcharaktere waren okay, aber mir nicht so sympathisch, dass ich bei ihrer Liebesgeschichte mitgefiebert hätte und ich konnte sie auch nicht ganz nachvollziehen. Der Schreibstil liest so flott, aber ich fand ihn zeitweise zu vulgär. Die Wörter 'Schwanz' und 'Zitronenlady' wurden meines Erachtens etwas überstrapaziert.
Ich hatte sehr gehofft, dass es mir besser gefallen würde und es hatte eigentlich auch alle Zutaten dafür, nur leider scheiterte es für mich an der Umsetzung.

What happens an the American (soon to find out heir) travels across the world to tell the “grandfather “ that ever wanted him to F off ? And he had no intention of taking over family duets meet said grandfathers assistant? Well color him intrigued. She’s lived through one scandal already does she go for round two ....throw in some zombies, a village the village naps said maybe heir , and a cranky old man and see what comes out on the other side ! HEA ❤️

Meinung:
Es war einmal ein Land weit, weit weg (ok, Yorkshire), in dem der charmante Erbe eines englischen Earls lebte, der auf Urlaub nach Amerika fuhr.
Das Cover passt zum Titel, aber zur Geschichte eher nicht so, denn Nick benimmt sich nicht wie ein Anzugträger und er kleidet sich auch nicht so.
Der Schreibstil ist wegen der Sicht recht gewöhnungsbedürftig, denn sie schreibt in der dritten Person, allerdings einmal aus Sicht von Nick und dann wieder aus Sicht von Brooke, wobei diese Wechsel auch mitten im Kapitel sind und nicht angekündigt werden. Daran muss man sich gewöhnen, aber ansonsten war der Schreibstil ok.
Zu Beginn lernt man Brooke kennen, die für den alten Earl arbeitet. Dieser will seinen Enkel Nick zu seinem Erben machen und will daher, dass Brooke ihn nach England holt und ihn auf seine Rolle vorbereitet. Nur will Nick das eigentlich gar nicht.

Allerdings nicht in Sachen, die ihr wichtig sind, wie bei ihren Ideen, wie man dem Dorf mehr Einnahmen verschaffen könnte. Obwohl immer gesagt wird, dass alle ihre Schwester lieber mögen und sie nur aktzeptieren hatte ich dieses Gefühl nie.
Nick hingegen mochte ich schon viel lieber. Am Anfang wirkt er arrogant, aber auch das ändert sich mit der Zeit. Man merkt schnell, dass er den Leuten eigentlich auch helfen will, nur zeigt er es nicht so offensichtlich. Außerdem ist er Handwerker und Erfinder durch und durch. Er denkt immer über neue Erfindungen nach und repariert auch mal was, wenn es sein muss.
Ich habe das Buch in der Leserunde bei Lesejury gelesen, geteilt in drei Abschnitte. Das erste Drittel fand ich gut, Nick kommt in England an und sträubt sich gegen alles. Es gibt Hindernisse, die er und Brooke nicht so schnell überwinden und obwohl sie ihn zuerst nicht mag, wird sie gewzungen Zeit mit ihm zu verbringen. Jedes Problem wurde schnell gelöst, zufällig haben sich Chancen ergeben, wenn Nick und Brooke diese gebraucht haben und wie es das Schicksal will schlafen sie in den Zimmern nebeneinander. Es ging einfach alles viel zu glatt und einfach dahin, ich hatte nie das Gefühl, dass die Charaktere wirklich Probleme haben, da die Lösung sofort da war. Die Handlung plätschert auch nur so vor sich hin und es ist ein ewiges hin und her, ob Nick nun bleibt oder nicht, ob Brooke ihn mag oder nicht, ob der Earl einem Vorschlag zustimmt oder nicht.
Leider wurde es dann auch im dritten Abschnitt nicht besser. Für mich war die Liebesgeschichte nicht wirklich nachvollziehbar und zu schnell. Plötzlich wird von der großen Liebe gesprochen, obwohl die sich nicht lange kennen und lange gehasst haben. Auch der Konflikt zwischen den beiden wurde viel zu schenll aufgelöst, es gab dabei nicht wirklich ein gutes Gespräch, sonder so in der Art: „Ich Tarzan, du Jane. Du gehören mir.“. Damit hatte sich die ganze Sache. Auch alle anderen Handlungsstränge und Andeutungen wurden nicht aufgeklärt. Man weiß nun nicht, was Brooke beruflich macht, ob sie es geschafft hat in den Gemeinderat zu kommen, so wie sie es wollte, oder ob ihre Ideen umgesetzt wurden. Vom alten Earl hört man sowieso nix mehr, der könnte ebenso gut gestorben sein, man weiß es nicht. Ebensowenig weiß man, wie es mit seiner Krankheit weiter ging. Und Nick? Er hatte ein Leben in Amerika, was wurde daraus? Aus seiner Firma, seinem Haus, seinen Freunden? Für mich blieben am Ende viel zu viele Fragen ungeklärt und das Buch hat mich sehr unbefriedigt zurück gelassen.

Für mich war das Buch leider nix.

Brooke Chapman-Powell muss als die Sekretärin des Earls von Englefield dessen Erbe Nick Vane dazu bringen, seine Verpflichtungen so schnell wie möglich anzunehmen. Doch Nick will nicht aus den USA weg und schon gar nichts mit seinem leiblichen Großvater zu tun haben. Seine Neugier treibt ihn schließlich doch nach England. Dort trifft er auf Brooke und ihren eisernen Willen, das Schloss, die Universität und das Dorf zu retten. Das geht allerdings nur wenn Nick seine Aufgaben ernst nimmt und mitarbeitet.
Mein Fazit:
Die Autorin konnte mich mit der Harbor City Trilogie ausgezeichnet unterhalten. Eine ausgezeichnete Mischung aus Witz, Humor, Situationskomik, toller Charaktere und gelungener Geschichte.
Mit "Secret Royal" hatte ich mir ähnliches versprochen. Begonnen hat die Story auch sehr unterhaltsam. Ein wenig verkehrte "Der Kleine Lord" Geschichte. Das Aufeinandertreffen von USA und England gestaltete sich explosiv und witzig.
Mit Fortdauer der Geschichte hat mich die Handlung leider recht gelangweilt. Ein Hin und Her vor allem der männlichen Hauptfigur. Nick war mir stellenweise einfach zu quengelig. Seine englischen Wurzeln hasst er, aber hinterfragt auch die Vergangenheit überhaupt nicht. Gerade da hatte die Geschichte für mich Potenzial. Das wurde leider nicht genutzt. Auch bei Brooke gab es unbeachtete Möglichkeiten.
Leider war ich wirklich recht enttäuscht von "Secret Royal". Aber ich werde mir dennoch Teil 2 noch holen, weil ich immer noch an das Talent der Autorin glaube, witzige Geschichten zu schreiben.

Ich habe mich sehr auf das Buch gefreut, weil ich royale Geschichten liebe und schon einige Bücher von Avery Flynn gelesen habe. Ich mochte bis jetzt jedes Buch von ihr das ich gelesen habe wirklich sehr. Jedoch hat mich Secret Royal enttäuscht.
Der Schreibstil ist vielleicht am Anfang etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber ich habe mich sehr schnell daran gewöhnt und hatte keine Probleme.
Jedoch hat mich die Geschichte an sich nicht überzeugen können.
Brooke mochte ich am Anfang sehr, jedoch wurde sie mir persönlich mit der Zeit zu kindisch und nervig. Ich konnte sie leider absolut nicht verstehen. Nick hat mir als Protagonist, etwas mehr gefallen. Er ist ein Erfinder und hat immer etwas ungewöhnliche Ideen, er war mir bis zum Ende sympathisch. Trotzdem bleiben beide Charaktere ziemlich flach, sie hatten nicht genügend tiefgang meiner Meinung nach. Die Gefühle von beiden kamen nicht so richtig bei mir an und ich weiß auch nicht warum die beiden sich inneinander verliebt haben.
Die Chemie zwischen den beiden hat mir einfach gefehlt. Gleichzeitig wirkte alles zu aufgezwungen und was mich zusätzlich gestört hat war, dass die Probleme sehr schnell abgehandelt wurden. Dadurch wirkte alles sehr unwichtig. Szenen die emotional hätten werden können, wurden dadurch eher zu einem Hintergedanken. Die Geschichte war zudem sehr kitschig und vorhersehbar. Das Buch war leider ein Flop für mich und ich kann nur 2 Sterne vergeben so leid es mir auch tut.

This is the grandson he refused to acknowledge all these years, especially after forcing his son to annul his marriage to an American and return to his rightful place. Nick Vane has no desire to visit the “old homestead” or do his grandfather’s bidding. Brooke Chapman-Powell, personal secretary to the Earl is on a mission to get the likely uncouth and lazy half-American Nick to England to help save the village from shutting down along with the university for the deaf, her sister attends. Nick is their only hope. Before long Nick is on his way to London since Brooke refuses to give up.
I adored these two; Nick and Brooke are perfect for each other despite being different, or somewhat opposites. Laid back Nick is a thinker, which allows for his creative and imaginative brain to visual improvements or new ideas or creations. It is why he has a number of patents. Brooke is a stick in the mud, rule follower, miss goody-two-shoes; especially after what happened with her last relationship. Nick calling her Miss Lemons is fitting and even Brooke can’t complain. Brooke loves her family and the village that loves her and has her back. She too has lots of ideas, mainly to bring tourism to the area. Nick and Brooke have a magnetism and chemistry that is off the charts. They are so good for each other, filling in for each other’s weaknesses and playing off their strengths.
Ms. Flynn wrote a wonderful and hysterical story that was moving and filled with sizzling chemistry, humorous dialogue, and charming characters that should definitely not be missed. I highly recommend Royal Bastard to other readers and I am anxious for the next book in this series.

Brooke wants to help out the town that stood by her when she needed it the most and the way to do that is to convince Nick to become the next Earl. What happens next is a battle of the wills as she is determined to teach him the proper protocol and he is determined to show her why he is unsuitable, and the outcome may surprise them both.
Brooke and Nick were so much fun together and the quirky townspeople certainly added to the story.

Royal Bastard is a fun, opposites attract romance! Author Avery Flynn has written another LOL romance…this one heading over waters with the characters! Nick and Brooke are an enjoyable slower-burn romance story. Super fun read that is a bit different than the regular romance. 4 stars!

Avery Flynn does it again with this hot and steamy yet charming fish out of water tale. Nick is a great book boyfriend and I recommend this book to everyone who wants a fun fairy tale of a story set in a little village in England. Couldn't put it down!

Hatte schon was, aber der Roman ist aus der Sicht eines neutralen Erzählers geschrieben, was nicht so meins ist… außerdem ging es fast mehr um das Dorf und den Earl als um die beiden…

I listened to the audio book. I've read this author before. This is a MF romance. set in the UK. Main characters are Brook from a small village in England and the secretary for a grumpy Earl, and Nick an American who unbeknown to him is the grandson of the sickly Earl. I like this story.

Ich habe nur Royal gesehen und wusste gleich: Dieses Buch muss ich lesen. Adel und Royal ist eins meiner liebsten Tropes. Das Cover hat mir gut gefallen und auch der Klappentext hat mich angesprochen. Avery Flynn hat einen flüssigen Schreibstil, der sich gut lesen lässt. Ich bin nur so durch die Seiten geflogen und innerhalb ein paar Stunden hatte ich das Buch beendet. Leider muss ich sagen, dass „Secret Royal“ mich nicht wirklich vom Hocker gehauen hat. Die Handlung war vorhersehbar, es mangelte an Tiefe und das Drama und Klischee war mir teilweise doch etwas zu viel.
Sowohl Nick, als auch Brooke hatten einiges an Potenzial, aber die Autorin hat dieses leider nicht ausgeschöpft. Sie bleiben beide eher oberflächlich und ich konnte mich nicht sehr gut in Nick und Brooke hineinversetzten. Das hat einfach das gewissen etwas. Allerdings konnten die Nebencharaktere noch etwas retten, da ich diese doch recht interessant fand. „Secret Royal“ ist eine dieser typischen Royal Romance Bücher, die nicht sonderlich hervorstechen.
In diesem Bereich/Genre habe ich definitiv schon bessere Bücher gelesen. Ich kann nur eine kleine Leseempfehlung aussprechen, da dieses Buch für eine Ablenkung zwischendurch ganz gut geeignet ist.

Sie bleiben beide eher oberflächlich und ich konnte mich nicht sehr gut in Nick und Brooke hineinversetzten. Das hat einfach das gewissen etwas. Allerdings konnten die Nebencharaktere noch etwas retten, da ich diese doch recht interessant fand. „Secret Royal“ ist eine dieser typischen Royal Romance Bücher, die nicht sonderlich hervorstechen.
In diesem Bereich/Genre habe ich definitiv schon bessere Bücher gelesen. Ich kann nur eine kleine Leseempfehlung aussprechen, da dieses Buch für eine Ablenkung zwischendurch ganz gut geeignet ist.
