Peer Coaching Media Mentorship Toolkit

Welcome to the Peer Coaching Media Mentorship Toolkit! The toolkit was created from a grant through the Maryland State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. You may borrow or replicate from the year long project. The intention of this project was to increase library staff's awareness of and comfort with new media, how to use new media in programming, and how to talk to families with children birth-8 about new media use. In order to establish long term collaborative work within our library system, this was done through peer coaching in order to establish long term collaborative work within our library system.

Start at the Introduction to learn more about the project and why we did it. Each section following provides examples of surveys, trainings, and documents we used throughout the process. We invite you to use any document found on this site for your own Media Mentorship journey!

In this section, you'll find the questions asked of the Harford County Public Library Staff to inform our planning of this project, as well as to see how much the staff grew in the peer mentoring process.

Along with the Staff Pre-Assessment, we also conducted Parent Discussion Groups to glean what parents need and want. Here, you'll find the questions we asked at the discussion group sessions, along with some best practices for conducting these informal discussion groups in your community.

To increase staff awareness and comfort with being media mentors, we established a peer mentoring structure where six staff were trained as lead coaches in the county. Here, you'll find the lead coach training materials, including the slides, handouts, and explanations of activities for the training.

These are the tools lead coaches used while working with staff - observation forms, packets they handed gave to their peers for later reference, and materials to conduct monthly meetings and a book discussion with the lead coaches.
