| HELP PTA SECURE MORE FUNDING FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS! California State PTA endorsed the Schools and Communities First initiative, which is collecting signatures along with a broad coalition of stakeholders to be included on the November 2020 state ballot. It will: - Reclaim $12 billion per year for K-12 schools, community colleges and local communities
- Close commercial property tax loopholes that corporations and wealthy investors use to avoid paying their fair share of property taxes
- Protect all homeowners and renters by maintaining tax protections for ALL residential property
- Ensure strict accountability so that money goes directly to our schools and communities
Our goal is for the Second District PTA to collect 2,000 signatures. Will you help? We would like each school to collect 100 signatures. No prior experience is needed, and we will explain how to do this. We suspect that by organizing a few parents at your school to stand outside on the sidewalk at drop-off for a few days, or at a school event, we will easily get there!
Please contact Michelle Parker for more information. We can drop off a packet to you on the weekend. Thank you!

| We want to share four quick things with you this month: - Calling all school PTA Legislation Chairs! We know that many of our PTAs have someone designated to lead advocacy efforts (it doesn't matter what their title is), but we don't have a list of who those people are! Please fill out this form so that they can be included in NEW monthly legislative updates and advocacy opportunities. We've got several advocacy-related activities coming up in the next few months and since advocacy is at the heart of PTA's existence, we know you won't want to miss out on these opportunities for your school.
Questions? Want to say hello? Contact Michelle Parker, VP of Legislation at legislation@sfpta.org or 415-260-8572.

| NOMINATION COMMITTEE FOR NEXT YEAR'S OFFICERS The purpose of the nominating committee is to recognize and seek qualified nominees for the elected leadership of the PTA. Most units should be electing the nominating committee no later than January or February for the election of officers in March or early April. For additional guidelines, visit the CAPTA site. | |

| HOW THE STATE BUDGET AFFECTS YOUR SCHOOL
The budget process for the coming school year has begun with the release of the Governor's proposal. It's complicated, and not all great news. Past CAPTA President, Carol Kocivar offers a map through the maze. |

| HOW OUR PTA CAN ADVOCATE ON PUBLIC ISSUES
PTA is a tax exempt IRC 501(c)(3), non-partisan, non-sectarian, and non-commercial organization. The PTA may take positions and advocate on public issues but not on candidates. Taking positions on candidates would jeopardize our tax-exempt status. Please see our website for additional guidelines.

| PTA Insurance Guide: For guidelines and information, click HERE SFUSD Emergency Notification Process: If an emergency does occur at a school, parents will be notified as quickly as possible using a variety of means including text, email and phone call. In order to receive messages, your child’s school must have your current contact information. To receive text messages you must opt-in to receive them (by law we cannot text you more than once without your permission). Once your mobile number is in the student information system, you will receive a message from SchoolMessenger. You can respond with a “YES.” If you already received a message from SchoolMessenger and did not opt-in, the system cannot message you again but it’s not too late to take steps to opt-in. To receive emergency text notifications, text “YES” to 67587 from your mobile phone. Please note, this will only work if your mobile number is entered correctly in the district’s system already.
