Onslow County Schools is helping their students find their vocational dream through a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Showcase.

The transition from the classroom to real-life jobs can seem daunting for students. The CTE program offers a chance for students to get their feet wet and a jump start in trade careers.

Students in the CTE program were able to take advantage of interactive activities at several booths set up at the American Legion Building in Jacksonville on Tuesday.

CTE courses included emergency medical training, firefighting, AP computer science, STEM, culinary and more. Senior Ethan Starzynski said he wants to join his father in their family electrical business -- adding the CTE program is helping him attain that goal quicker than he imagined.

“When I get out of high school and go through two years of college, I’ll not be 100% green or not know a single thing," Starzynski said. "I have, at least, the basics down from being in this class. And it’s not just in the book. It’s hands on, too.”

Over 1,800 8th graders were expected to attend the showcase. The goal was they leave with a better understanding of available courses and career paths available within the CTE program.

Starzynski said the program has already given him some certifications in carpentry. Students who attended today's event can choose their CTE electives in April.
