Gabel & Giguere Named Patty Kazmaier Top 10 Finalists

The top two scorers in NCAA Women's Hockey, Clarkson University linemates Loren Gabel and Elizabeth Giguere were announced today by the USA Hockey Foundation as Top-10 finalists for the 2019 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. The honor is bestowed annually upon the top player in NCAA Division I women's ice hockey. This year's winner will be announced at a brunch ceremony at Cascade Fine Catering in Hamden, Connecticut, on Saturday, March 23, as part of the NCAA Women's Frozen Four weekend hosted by Quinnipiac University.

Nine schools are represented in the top-10 with Clarkson leading the way with two finalists.  Among the top-10 finalists are eight forwards, one defender and one goaltender, including six seniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. ECAC Hockey leads all conferences with five finalists, while the Hockey East Association boasts three finalists and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association has two finalists.

Clarkson's dynamic duo headlines one of the most potent offenses in the country and has powered the two-time defending National Champion Golden Knights to another highly successful season in 2018-19. Clarkson owns a 24-7-1 overall record and enters the final weekend of the regular season challenging for its third consecutive ECAC Hockey title with a 15-5 league mark.

 
Gabel, with the goal, and Giguere, with the assist, teamed up on Clarkson's last score, the game-winner in 3-2 overtime victory at Harvard (2/16) with 4.9 seconds left in the extra session. For Gabel that was her second goal of the game, NCAA-leading 33rd of the season and Division I best ninth game-winner of the 2018-19 campaign.  Giguere, who set up all three Golden Knight goals in the victory, is tied for the national lead in assists with 38.


26327A senior left wing, Gabel is the NCAA's leading goal scorer with 33 and is tied with her linemate Giguere for most points in Division I with 59 through 30 games. She ranks first in the NCAA in game-winning goals (9) and hat tricks (3). Gabel has recorded at least one point in 26 of 30 games, including 17 multiple-point outings. The Kitchener, Ont. native leads Division I in shots on goal per game (7.50) and posts the nation's third best plus/minus (+41). 

Gabel is Clarkson's all-time leading scorer with 203 points on a school-record 109 goals and 94 assists through 152 career games.

Honored as Women's Hockey Commissioner's Association National Player of the Month on two occasions (October, January), Gabel has also been named ECAC Hockey Player of the Month on two occasions (October, January) and conference Player of the Week on three occasions (Oct. 22, Nov. 26, Jan. 28). She has been recognized as NCAA First Star of the Week once (Jan. 29), NCAA Second Star of the Week three times (Oct. 23, Nov. 27, Jan. 22) and NCAA Third Star of the Week once (Feb. 5).

A Communications major, Gabel volunteers her time at Potsdam Elementary School and participates in Smart Cookies Enriched Program, Clarkson Women's Hockey Lil' Knights Club and Active Souls Project with Special Olympics. She has volunteered with Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto and participates annually in Skate with a Knight, as well as Potsdam Community Outreach Clean-Up.

In just her second collegiate season, Giguere has already established herself as one of the NCAA's best. The sophomore right wing shares the NCAA point lead (59) with Gabel and is tied as 26328Division I's leading playmaker with 38 assists in 32 games. Giguere owns the nation's best plus/minus (+51) and ranks first in the NCAA in shorthanded goals with five, more than 30 teams' totals. The Quebec City, Que. native has recorded at least one point in 27 of 32 games, including 20 multiple-point outings. She was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Month for November.

Giguere, who reached 100 points faster than any other Golden Knight, has amassed 130 career points on 48 goals and 82 assists in just 73 games.

A business studies major, Giguere volunteers at Potsdam Elementary School, Colton-Pierrepont Central School and at Smart Cookies Enriched Program along with Clarkson Women's Hockey Lil' Knights Club and at Clarkson Youth Hockey Clinics. She has helped out at Holiday Food Drives and participates annually in the Skate with a Knight program and Potsdam Community Outreach Clean-Up.
