A STRATHAVEN gin company has made over 400 gin-sized bottles of hand-sanitiser to deliver to vital NHS and public service workers for free.

Gin company Inspirited teamed up with local gin-makers McLeans to transform their factory into making 70cl bottles of hand sanitiser and is giving them free to those most in need.

The seven-strong team of volunteers have all hands to the pump, making 417 bottles since Monday and working 12-hour shifts.

Inspirited Master Distiller Lawrence Nicholson, 25, said: “It’s no more gin making for us, though we’re still drinking at night!

“We didn’t expect this three months ago but we’re doing it because we can.

“We have everything available to us to help in this situation and get essentials to those who can’t get access to the basics.”

The company has already given 60 litres of sanitiser to Police Scotland to distribute to GPs and nursing homes, as well as sending 90 bottles directly to local hospices.

It comes as Johnnie Walker owner Diageo announced it will donate up to two million litres of alcohol to manufacturing companies to make the product.

Other alcohol companies including Brewdog also started churning out the bug-busting product.

Along with Colin McLean, 30, from McLeans gin, Inspirited raised £2000 through the justgiving website and are putting their own funds into the project.

Their hand sanitiser, made in line with hygiene guidelines, contains 96.4 per cent spirit and comes in much bigger 70cl bottles than the average 200ml size – allowing the NHS and police stations to dispense the product into smaller plastic bottles.

Inspirited launched a limited online sale of 86 bottles of hand sanitiser to local buyers last night but sold out in minutes.

They hope to produce more bottles at the cost price of £4.60 for locals - each with free delivery within the ML10 postcode area, including the Strathaven and Hamilton.

Some online retailers on Amazon have been selling 600ml bottles of sanitiser for £120.
