The old post office building on Hamilius remains a piece of Luxembourgish history. It has now stood empty for two years.

While the construction works on the new Centre Royal-Hamilius remain in full swing, a historic building stands vacant and unchanged: the old Hôtel des Postes has been empty for two years now.

In 2017, the general management of the Luxembourgish Post moved into the newly built Mercier near Luxembourg Gare (central train station). The aim of the move was to better regroup different parts of the administration. The move was meant to be temporary, however. In three years, they want to move into a new building on Rue d’Épernay just next to where the former Post building stood. Post Lëtzebuerg, which still owns the building on Hamilius, takes a number of measures, like regular heating, to prevent the building from deteriorating.

A design proposal by Belgian eco-architect Vincent Callebaut as part of a 2015 competition had planned new modern restaurants, offices and flats in the building. The design also involved a lot of greenery and a large glass dome. This project has since been abandoned due to size restrictions and safety concerns.

Currently, Post and Luxembourg City are discussing the idea of transforming the building into a hotel. One of the post office counters is also supposed to stay. More concrete plans are to be discussed in the coming months.
