"Friends - How Many Of Us Have Them?"

Friends is a word we use every day. But most of the time we use it in the wrong way. A friend is someone you judge for yourself. Some are okay and they treat you well. But sometimes they mistake kindness for being a fool. Yes, friends how many of us have them?

Great question! And as I think about my latest romantic suspense novel, Gotta Get It Back, I reflected upon the friendship between my protagonist Deidre Hunter and her nosy neighbor, Miss Benita. After reading  the following snippet from a conversation between the two of them, there's no doubt Miss Benita always has Deidre's back:

With her cup in hand, she took a sip and then said, “You know, Deidre…you’re a good woman. I’ve watched you go through some shit, and here you are, still standing. Us women…” She took another sip and then placed the cup down. “Most of our problems begin and end with men, especially the handsome ones.”

Oh Lawd, here it comes.

She continued, “Yes, handsome men can be a blessing and a curse. A blessing because they are great to look at, and a curse because other women lust after them shamelessly. So which is it?”

I couldn’t agree with her more. I lowered my head and replied, “A curse.”

“I think Hill’s a great guy. But my advice to you…” She paused. “Don’t let no other woman come between you and your man. When you find someone you can truly be yourself with, someone who can make you laugh and cry, then he’s worth holding on to.” Her gaze shifted to a blank spot on the wall.

I said softly, “I hear you.”

Suddenly she slapped her knees. “Well then, you know what to do with these heifers if they

try to wedge their behinds between you two?”

“Yeah, I have to tell Hill not to be too charming or too trusting.”

Miss Benita had an incredulous look on her face.

“What? That’s not what I should do?” I asked.

“No, you just cut a bitch!”
