Exciting engineering challenges with great prizes

Show off your skills and solve real design problems

Global Stratasys Design Inspiration Challenge

As you may already know, Stratasys is leading the way in how designers, engineers and innovators use 3D printing to solve complex challenges. For this challenge imagine you have unique access to best in class full-color multi-material PolyJet 3D printers. With that in mind we invite you to unleash your creativity and show us what is possible knowing that the winning work will be printed on this powerful design tool.

The challenge: design a “pebble” to showcase PolyJet capabilities and you could win a gift card, swag bag and special recognition. This special competition is open to all designers worldwide. The challenge asks you to showcase your ideas and skills while exploring the capabilities of full color, multi-material 3D printing. The winner should be able to provide a compelling written explanation of the characteristics they are showcasing, the design inspiration (origin of where the design idea came from), and how they iterated through their design cycle. The final submission will include this narrative, any relevant images, and the files (OBJ, STL or VRML) to produce a fully printable and well-designed 3D model. The more information supplied the better – images, renderings, videos and screenshots of the
design are encouraged! Winning models will demonstrate a specific set of capabilities within the build specifications given in the requirements below.

Entries will be accepted from Wednesday, July 1st through Monday, 3rd of August. and Winners will be announced mid-October

Requirements

  • JUDGING CRITERIA

    1. Design Attractiveness (40%) – Design quality and esthetics. Is the design pleasing and evokes emotion? Will it inspire other designers to use Polyjet for their design process?

    2. Wise utilization of Polyjet technology (40%) – use of multi-color, multi-material capabilities. How does the design show the value of PJ over other 3d printing technologies, what is the feature / capability showcased in the design.

    3. Printability (20%) - design compatible with 3d printing capabilities and limitations.

  • TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

    1. The design should keep the same outline geometry and general shape of the original pebble, and should not exceed its dimensions.

    2. the design should consider the current text location

    3. Materials Available: Full color rigid materials, Transparent, Flexible and combinations of them

    4. Files should be 3d printable – watertight 3d volumes, no open surfaces.

    5. Thin walls should be not less than 0.02 inch

    6. Geometry with negative angles will be contacted with support material. please consider the support removal process while designing.

    7. The Pebble can be printed as one part or in separate parts and assembled.

    8. If there is a need for post-processing please define what kind and where.

  • WHAT IS REQUIRED

    1. 1-page (500 words or less) narrative on your design inspiration and PolyJet capabilities you are showcasing

    2. Supporting images including, but not limited to, final design rendering or image

    3. Supporting documents on the design iteration & creative process (including previous 3D printed, hand-made mockup or sketches) to get to the final design

    4. Final 3D printable file submitted as an STEP, XT, STL, OBJ, VRML file type along with a document explaining color, durometer, or material selection

Very cool challenge! My one question is: Does the final design have to be only the "Pebble" or can the Pebble be a part of a larger, more complex design?

  • Gina Scala

@JohnMcBride - Pebble is a shape we selected to have a basic canvas for everyone to design on. Here we are not concerned with geometry but what you can do with - color, texture, clear, etc -- and how you bring these design "swatches" to life --- think of this as a small way to test a concept.

Gina Scala has uploaded 6 CAD models & has left 7 comments.
  • Gina Scala

Gina Scala almost 4 years ago

@kenneth - The PolyJet technology is multi-material -- which means more then just color -- it is the full gamut of colors plus - transparency - flexibility - rigidity. What is magical is that this is all possible in ONE part - ONE print.... With those tools the possibilities are ENDLESS - check out some of our creations - https://www.stratasys.com/explore/video/design-inspiration-kit-unboxing - and then think of something you want to try and give it a shot!

  • Gina Scala

@Aayush - YES!! We want everyone to use the same geometry -- think of this as a swatch that inspires future bigger designs -- the possibilities are really endless!

@Gina and @Kesa. Cool challenge! I see that geometry can be submitted in a number of formats, but the linked instructions about printing textured objects in clear blocks specifies VRML format. Is that required, or can we submit a STEP file, a rendering and a text description?

  • Hila Desheh

Hila Desheh over 3 years ago

@Julian, it depends on your design. if you have texture maps in your design than obj, vrml or 3mf are file formats that include that information. STEP does not.
if your design is composed of rgb colors / Stratasys materials, you can submit STEP with supporting documents on what color / material should be assigned to each part. (if it was not assigned in the cad)

I am thrilled to become one of the finalists of this competition.

I see a lot of outstanding designs and talented designers around the world via this opportunity, for example, I was astounded by the creativity and hard work of Anouar Barodi, Aniello Sessa and Okpaman.

The design by Ben Chann was simple yet powerful; while the work of Nick Tyrer visualised the elasticity and vitality of the pebble.

Among the finalists, I like Allan Morel’s Black Hole Pebble rendering the most, I see both rich texture and smooth details in his masterpiece; while my favourite work is Julian Groeli’s Concept Wave, he leveraged radiating lines with a consistent flow to clash with the border of the pebbles, creating a beautiful and artistic dividing line - the only down side from my perspective is the three colours that he created, which I believe one colour would be sufficient for beautiful creations like this.

In general, people like to predict the future, and the edge of my design is to use pebbles with Stratasys Polyjet 3D printing technology to predict the next milestone of the 3D printing industry. I believe the ultimate goal of 3D printing would go beyond merely printing a decoration or a building, but to print the way we live and the way we sustain our lives for the generations to come.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if in 5 or 10 years’ time, this design on biological printing can really come to life?

Finally, I believe that Stratasys Polyjet 3D printing technology would be able to bring out the best in each and every designs, regardless of how wild or detailed the concepts are.

I wish to express my gratitude to Stratasys and Grabcad for organising this competition, and thanks to all the other contestants for enriching my understanding of the unlimited possibilities brought by 3D printing technology.
